According to Antonia Fraser, who writes very well-researched historical biographies, the remark should actually be credited to Marie-Therese, Louis XIV's wife, about 100 years earlier. It was pulled out of mothballs to discredit Marie Antoinette.

Lady Fraser knows her stuff, so I will take her word on this, even though she hates Nell Gwynne - bitch. <_<
