Is Wolf's Rain "otome"?
« on: Aug 16, 2022, 05:28:04 PM »
Never really occurred to me before, mainly because I probably didn't know what otome was way back when this anime first aired, but the central cast is totally a choose-your-boyfriend sampler pack, isn't it? And they're always doting on the one female lead.

Maybe I should try watching it again. I just remember being disappointed with it overall. Like, it was kind of dull, or something? I don't know.

I guess she's not really the protagonist, is she?

But it's gotta be otome-adjacent, at the very least.

Sorry, they added (re-added?) this show to Crunchyroll recently, that's what got me thinking about it again.

Isn't it just fujo bait? Otome would have more romance, wouldn't it?

Oh, fuck! Yes! Of course. Totally forgot about that angle.

Do you remember much of it? Were they actually werewolves, or were they always just plain old wolves and their "human forms" were simply for the benefit of the audience? You know, to avoid having a show about a bunch of wolves running around barking and growling at each other instead of actual dialogue.

I don't recall much (and had to cheat by peeking at Wikipedia) but the human forms are disguises and wolves are supposed to be extinct or something.  I also recall (looking at the promo art) that it was yet another anime with an utterly forgettable main character. And it had a girl that was doubly forgettable since I forgot she even existed in the first place.  Tsume (edgy wolf), Toboe (chubby wolf), and Blue (girl wolf) were the only wolves that made an impression on me.  And I really liked Cher and Hubb and was super pissed when Cher died.

Shit, I forgot there even was a girl wolf! I only remembered the four dudes and the weird chick... who was actually a flower?

IIRC, the marketing at the time leaned into the idea that the creative team shared some Cowboy Bebop DNA, and if I hadn't known that, maybe I would have judged it less harshly? As it was, I was just kind of like, "Man, this ain't no Bebop!"

Nothing ever will be again.

I completely forgot it was advertised that way until you brought it up just now.
