PSP vs DS
« on: Mar 26, 2005, 02:51:09 PM »
I'm currently contemplating saving up some money to purchase a DS, and I was wondering what's the better handheld console?
I'm leaning towards the DS, because it's backwards compatible with some GBA games I have. Then again, the PSP graphics look pretty nice....But the DS has some games coming out for it later this year I'm interested in...

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

It's a tough call. I kept my DS for about four months, the lack of good games really stung.  It's a shame that a good chunk of the DS' library is made up of GBA ports with touch-screen minigames...or N64 ports that aren't even optimized for the system.  If you're into Nintendo, just go ahead and go with the GBA SP.

The PSP is a very nice system and outside of games it has some very nice features if you can afford the extra memory.  It's already replaced my iPod and I REALLY like the video features. Not to mention that the launch line-up was ALOT better than what was found on the DS.  However there is a disturbing amount of racing games being released... You're also getting a complete console experience with the games--I'm highly anticipating the portable Devil May Cry.  Also, given the fact that the thing connects to a computer via USB, it's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to emulate 16 bit games and even GBA games on the system.

Now, I'm a console whore.  If a new console or AAA title comes out, I buy it.  Since you're more of a casual gamer, wait until E3.  Wait until you see some of the heavy hitters in action before you plunk down your $150-200. (I say $200 because the non-value pack PSP will probably be about that.)  In my opinion, the DS is really fucking up.  Nintendo isn't porting the games it should be and games that are pretty much done won't be out until fall because there are fucktards who want handheld games with online capabilites.  It would be beyond easy for them to port something as simple as Super Smash Bros. and have it be a hit...

PSPs apparently are fragile, and bruise like a ripe tomato.

PSP is pretty terrible.

Take your pick.

Gee Tap-Tap, that was so well educated and intelligent a response you've totally convinced me!
I'm going to wait on the DS/PSP anyway, The games I do want don't come out till august or beyond, so I'll have plenty of time to see what comes out. When is E3 anyway?

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

It's April 8th.

The PSP is about as fradgile as an iPod thanks to the moving parts inside.  However, it comes with a case and a wrist strap, so dropping it while playing shouldn't be a concern.

It's May 18.

I know that because the More Friends concert I'm going to is before that...

Yeah. I might look into getting a used one. the SP charge cable is the same one as the DS, and you can get the Stylus' Cheap enough.
Also, I don't really trust sony products. Both PS2's I've gotten have conked out on me, whil the original NES we have STILL WORKS.

I think in the long run the DS is gonna be the better system.  That is until the next Gameboy comes out. It'll probably have hte touch screen like the DS, play mp3's and movies, maybe GC games too.

Maybe they'll make cases for it like minidiscs where you can put your GC discs in.  Plus, ever heard of a portable CD player?

The whole idea of Nintendo doing something like that is laughable.
