Too true. I mentioned this already in the pet thread, but our Rat Terrier Killian had two front claws torn out by a piece of shit kid. When we first saw him, he weighed a little over 3 lbs. ( at 9 wks. old!) from loss of blood & shock, had his foot bandaged & was a mass of scabs from being drop-kicked down a flight of stairs. If ratters weren't such tough little dogs, he wouldn't have made it.

As long as you're using them for food I don't mind. I actually don't mind any animal being used for food, as long as they're not being tortured in some way between, and that their death is as humane as possible. This being America, there's no such thing as a humane death, so I'm caught at an im passe.

Faye, shut up. Animals have emotions just as humans do. Yes, they have instincts, but they grieve and are happy just like everything else. If you separate a kitten from the mother cat, it is worried and looks for it just like a mother human would. If you have two pets and one dies, the survivor will grieve for its lost friend. If you take good care of them, a pet will be happy when you come home and sad when you're away. You're saying you want a $3000 dog? Don't waste your money, if you have an attitude like that.

As humans are also animals, I would tend to agree in some situations. A human child, for instance, is instinctually selfish, needy and generally deplorable with no concept of sympathy toward any species, especially its own. Unless trained, it will continue indefinitely with this behavior. Is this perhaps what you had in mind regarding instinct?

i am not sure because that would also mean that if you teach an animal it could have feelings too. for what i've learned in my almost 2 years I had as a bio/pre med major is that feelings come along with the capacity of reasoning. being the human the only living being that has the capacity for this, it would then also mean it is the only living being with the capacity for "feelings".
