Oh and something I thought about during the Olympics:
NBC seems to really go on about the "triumphs" of the Olympics and how people are realizing their dreams and winning, and they focus on people who have won and how far they've come as if to trumpet some kind of "rags to riches" story. "This person started out in the ghettos of Chicago and is now winning gold..." ect ect.
That's all fine and good and I wish they'd shut the hell up about all of that, but what about everyone else? Remember, only a small percentage of the thousands of people who go there actually win a medal. Everyone else is just a loser. Sorry, you got this far but failed at the end. I remember seeing this look of horror at some guy dead last in some sprint. And you think some of these people devote their entire life and money to trying to get there and fail.
"This guy from Ethiopia sold his children into slavery and his wife left him, he ate bread crumbs and out of dumpsters, and practiced every single day for this chance...Aww, he came in last. Better luck next time."
"But there won't be a next time! I have no money left!"
