De GOP (it's fukkin politics)
« on: Sep 25, 2011, 10:14:42 PM »
Only named after the GOP because the Dems are just fingering their asses and besides Obama will probably run again.

Rick Perry as president freaks me out.  It's bad enough with him as governor, I don't want to imagine this shit on a national level.

Bachman's a scary bitch.  Newsweek got that shit right.

Ron Paul's an interesting little elf.

I wonder what Herman Cain's pizza tastes like.

Is Mitt Romney really the front runner?

Fuck a Palin.  Go away, bitch.

Ha ha, Santorum's mad at teh Google.

I forget the rest of the peeps running.  Huntsman something or other.

I really don't get these straw poll things when they're just buying votes with food and shit.

I like Ron Pauls anti illegal immigration policy but he's kind of nuts when it comes to other things.

I think there is a solid chance that obama might lose and I'm not sure why but I think that could be bad news for me even though I never got anything from Uncle Obama, he should've made my student loans go away.  I want free monies.

Oh look, Mittens won the Michigan straw poll.

Quote
Michigan native Mitt Romney rolled over Governor Rick Perry of Texas and the rest of his Republican presidential rivals in a Michigan straw poll yesterday, reinforcing a favorite-son status that could make it tough for anyone else to win the state’s GOP primary.

It was the second day of bad news for Perry, who lost to businessman Herman Cain in a Florida straw poll Saturday before heading to the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference in Michigan. Perry’s second-place finish in Florida came just days after he faltered in a debate in Orlando, Fla. Romney came in third there, although he isn’t officially competing in straw polls.

[More at the link...]

Meanwhile, Cain apparently won the Florida Straw Poll just by sticking around.

The sad thing is, he hasn't the proverbial snowball's chance, but Herman Cain is great. I really like his tax plan, and I believe he's a quick study on anything else he's not already worked on. He's one of the few actual human beings with half-a-brain in politics right now.

Reminds me of a joke: what do you call a politician with half-a-brain? Gifted.

While people think he's nuts, Ron Paul actually makes a whole lot of sense. The only problem is that he's lobbying for a return to the antebellum American government.  For better or worse we're too far gone for a return to the republic this thing was founded on. I feel he has more of the turn of the 19th century Democratic Republican stance than Libertarian, which is why he fits in no convenient mold. I love the man...despite being completely unelectable, we'd all be better off if we'd actually heed what he has to say.

Here's my opinion of the field in brief:

Rick Perry's a compassionate conservative Bushling.
Mitt Romney's a put-on Northeastern RINO.
Michele Bachmann's shrill and successfully demonized but with questionable merit.
Herman Cain's a successful mathmatician, Navy man, CEO, and Oreo.
Ron Paul is the 21st century's analog of Cassandra.
Newt Gingrich's the smartest has-been in the room.
Rick Santorum's an unremarkable Republican blank slate.
Jon Huntsman's "the only Mormon to run in the IA straw poll, and he came in second amongst Mormons" (thanks, Jon Stewart).
Gary Johnson's like a failing student who sneaks in and gets in the picture with honor roll students in the class annual.
Jimmy McMillan's rent is too damn high...much like himself.

Still, any one of these is preferable to me over the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

The only thing I'm excited about in politics is that Elizabeth Warren is running for senate and that gets her a step closer to the White House in 2016.
Till then, this country is balls.

In addition to overseeing TARP, she's a pay their fair sharer who believes anyone who is rich owes the rest of the world for letting them do it. So if you believe in income redistribution then she's your candidate.

I believe that everyone should pay the same percentage in taxes, and if a corporation is considered on the same level as an individual then they fit this as well. I know this will screw people on both ends of the spectrum but I really do feel it should be evened out. It doesn't have to be immediate, but I feel it's where it should go.

I liked the words she said from a thirty second video, but I might change my mind when I hear more. All politicians seem to have a knack for sounding great for awhile and then completely smacking you in the face with something you don't agree with at all.

Corporations don't actually pay taxes...the people who buy the goods and services from them do. So who actually bears the cost? That being said, the cost of doing business is far too high and becoming exclusive, add we have one of the highest corporate tax structures in the developed world. The problem is the proliferation of loopholes that enable the biggest companies to weasel out of paying "their fair share". And nobody on either side of the aisle really wants to touch the problem.

This is why Herman Cain has had a surge in popularity recently. His 9-9-9 plan, whether it would work or ever get a chance to, is simple, reasonable, and absolute...not to mention fair. And I think people of all stripes appreciate that.

I'm hoping this surge in attention for Cain gives him some momentum.  Out of the Republican candidates, him and Paul are the ones I like the most.

And while I don't think Ron Paul would ever be elected president, someone should put him in some high cabinet post.  He's a great idea man.

I think it would be cool if the worst possible Republican candidate wins, then they're less likely to win the actual Presidency!

But what do I care?  I'm just Canadian, and while US politics does have some peripheral affect on Canada, I'm more concerned at what kind of asshole President my American friends end up with.

There is no way Cain or Paul will get chosen by the Repubs. They just aren't batshit crazy enough.
Also one of them is black, and the other is Ron Paul.

Ron Paul is right about pretty much everything, and neo-cons hate him because he calls them out on their faux free market crap and "nation-building" waging of war. We paleo-cons love him for it, but the common-sense conservative is not in vogue with the GOP...for now.

He'd never fit in any Republican administration, though, and for the reasons cited.

Crash and burn, Perry.

Rick Perry slips, Herman Cain rises in bid for GOP nomination, poll finds

Quote
Among announced candidates — without Christie or Palin in the race — Romney leads with 25 percent, which is identical to his support from a month ago. Perry and Cain are tied for second with 16 percent, numbers representing a 13-point drop for Perry and a 12-point rise for Cain since early September.

Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) is the only other candidate in double figures, at 11 percent. Just behind him are former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), both with 7 percent. Gingrich’s support has held steady through the late summer. Bachmann’s numbers fell sharply after Perry announced his candidacy.

Former senator Rick Santorum (Pa.) and former Utah governor Jon Huntsman Jr. bring up the rear, with Santorum at 2 percent and Huntsman at 1 percent.

If Christie and Palin are included in the hypothetical matchup, he checks in at 10 percent and she at 9 percent.

But corporations pay their workers to do work, and those workers pay personal taxes, so corporations pay personal taxes? That causality is a bit of a loop.

Corporations don't actually pay taxes...the people who buy the goods and services from them do.
But corporations pay their workers to do work, and those workers pay personal taxes, so corporations pay personal taxes? That causality is a bit of a loop.

To sum it up, taking money from corporations indirectly takes money from the individuals comprising the entity. Either consumers of the goods and/or services provided pay into that difference, workers get reduced wages or benefits, or shareholders get less return on their investment. Who deserves to lose out because certain people think corporations should pay "their fair share"?

There's a lot of talk about people resenting that corporations are essentially a legal person who doesn't pay the proper amount of tax, but the fact that this corporate body is built by those three groups means that the burden will fall on them. Some may blame the executives and their huge salaries, their huge stock options, and those golden parachutes people hate but are there as a mechanism to get rid of bad execs. But that's an internal decision that has no bearing on anyone else, particularly the government.

That's just basic economics. I'm not saying corporations shouldn't pay: they benefit from public resources and should by right pay...it's the right thing to do. But trying to take them to the cleaners because they're convenient scapegoats or for the valid reason that loopholes create an inequitable system in relation to other taxpayers is the wrong thing to do. Fixing the system rather than singling out one facet of it is what's called for here.

Christie's out and Palin's out.  Too bad for Palin Steve Jobs had the audacity to die and nab the top spot on Google News.  Christian Science Monitor asks if Palin's political career is "kaput".  I say it ended when she resigned as governor of Alaska to take on a new career of milking her fifteen minutes for as long as humanly possible.
