Netflix price structure changes, ppl rage.
« on: Jul 12, 2011, 10:01:21 PM »
http://www.pcworld.com/article/235627/netflix_users_protest_proposed_price_increases_with_social_media_firestorm.html

Quote
Netflix users stormed the streaming video and DVD rental services' blog and Facebook page by the thousands on Tuesday to criticize a new pricing structure that will raise some users' monthly bill by 60 percent.

The service announced that it would separate its streaming and DVD rental services, ostensibly to let its users choose if they wanted just one service or both. The result: The $9.99 per month plan, which allowed one DVD out at a time and which currently includes unlimited video streaming will jump to $15.98 under the new price structure. Unlimited streaming or one DVD out at a time will now cost $7.99 each.

Netflix users weren't too happy to receive the news.  Users left nearly 3,000 posts on the Netflix blog as of 6 p.m. Tuesday and around 10,000 comments on the company's Facebook page. Commentors accused Netflix of being greedy and alleged it was trying to "choke more change" out of its customers. Others suggested refreshing the streaming content to justify the price change. Others said they would be leaving Netflix.

[More at the link above...]

So I was reading about the change at my computer at work and thinking, 'oh, that's balls', but then I went into Merla's acct (since she's the primary acct holder and pays for it) and lo', I go to look at the plans and her price point of 23.98 is the same.  Apparently... only cheapos are effected by this.   :raiseeyebrow:

I mean, it's a big increase percentage-wise, don't get me wrong.  That 60% is being quoted all over the place.  But shit, 16.00 for streaming and at least three dvds a month (assuming you're turning your single dvd in on time) isn't bad.  It's the price of, like, three bargain bin selections from Wal-mart when you think about it.  Eat one less fast food burger combo a month and let's call it a day.

I was thinking of getting Netflix too.  But I'm sure I'd only end up streaming stuff.

Anyone know if you can record streams off your game systems?

I think these costs are incredibly reasonable.

16 bux a month isn't a bad price.

for that service.  It's a pretty big hike though to happen all of a sudden I wonder what prompted it (i mean if it was something other than just WE WANT MO MONEYZ!)

IF it really is just a greed move, then this is a prime time for a competitor to move in and keep it real at 9.99.

I think Netflix needed the money to get more content and renegotiate the current content.  The studios want a bigger piece of the cheese and all that.

Oh, also, Netflix thought more people would jump on streaming and use fewer DVDs but that didn't happen.  So the people on the 1 dvd plan were basically getting it for 2 bucks.  So Netflix wasn't saving on postage like it thought it would and had to raise the price.  This, too, methinks.

They already have a major competitor with Hulu Plus, and Hulu can give current shows as well as a back catalog, but it's not quite as large as NF. The cost is similar, though, compared to NF new streaming plan.

I think most who wanted streaming wanted a cheaper option anyway (including myself).

I was about to bite on Netflicks actually. Course this doesn't effect me because I can't stream anyway. Which makes me a sad panda. I was over at a friends house and he was running Netflix through his Wii, and it was pretty awesome. I got the Wii, not that it does any good.

Which means you'll actually get it cheaper if you're just doing one disc at a time.

I know...thus it doesn't effect me. I think I might still pay 16 bucks though if I could stream. I'm sure I pay that much to the red box over a few months and it has a lot more limited selection then Netflix does. Plus if I had unlimited streams I'd be watching movie after movie. I'd be like the really fat guy at the all you can eat buffet. I would make sure I got my moneys worth and then some. But alas...no high speed.

I can't see them changing the price up here, because NO ONE would stick around for it. It's already robbery as far as I'm concerned.

I'd have to get betters house first, since the problem is they don't offer high speed where I live.

It is not so much that I live in any middle of no where nearest neighbor is 30 miles away type place. I have several neighbors that live close enough that I can hear them when they are fighting. In fact we run off city water.  The problem is that the companies around here are very cheap and lazy. They pretty much just cover the city proper and anything outside of that doesn't get covered. So unless you live inside the city limits you just don't get these services. Now it has been getting better as of late. They have started to move outside the cities in the last couple of year. They have even been following the main roads in and out, which I live on. But they have only made it so far and stopped it at intersection that is only 1.8 miles from my house.

There was a federal grant for expanding the high speed internet network, and a few places applied for it. But if they get it, how long it will take, and if it is even going to run by house are still up in the air. I just think it might be easier to move, which I have been trying to do for a few years now but luck hasn't been on my side.

The only time I pay to see a movie is when it's something in the theater.
I was just so mad at the switch to blurays that i stopped buying movies altogether.
My dvd collection unceremoniously ceased to increase in 2007.

No...but I will. I've looked into Hughes.net and Dish Network internet and both are a little on the high side. I think last time I checked Hughes.net it was something like $700 to install and $70 bucks a month. This was of course by satellite and that is still a little to new to be cheap.

And as I was typing this I checked Clear and no...I can't get Clear.

Oh and I've been slowly changing over my collection to BluRay, but it has been slow. I only own 10 BluRays. And they have to be cheap for me to scoop them up. Also doesn't mean I stop buying DVDs if I can get them at a good deal. I don't tend to pay more then 10 bucks for a movie.

You should move somewhere with proper INTERNET and people you can sell your writing to before you're on the wrong side of 40.

Selling my writing from here shouldn't be hard. Hell I've already done it. If I got into script writing I might have to move someplace like LA, but I wouldn't move there if I could avoid it. Give me a choice between LA  and NY and I'll pick NY every time. Besides I wouldn't start with script writing anyway, that would be something I'd move to later when I could pretty much write my own chell as far as what I wanted to do was concerned. I have had my eye on Austin, Texas as a place that I might like to move to. It has its own little movie people community there (anything to avoid LA.) climate is what I am looking for, and any city whose motto is "Keep Austin Weird" seems like an O.K. place by me. Main problem is that I think I'll have to sell a book for two before I can make that move.

But yeah I should move for the internet thing.

I'm quitting teh Netflix. I don't have time for a constant stream of DVDs anymore, even one at a time. I can stream, but buffering is a pain and it's too slow for HD content. If I want to download HD stuff, well, Demonoid is free.

I was keeping Netflix for old time's sake and for when I would have time for it. But doubling the cost for it has tipped the scales towards cutting it.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

With zip still cornering the market on disc based services, there's nothing to split.

I think zip/Rogers will be throwing their hat into the streaming service game real soon.  Netflix just can't work out the rights to enough to make it worthwhile.  My brother has netflix, and it's all righ in a sense than if you just want to watch something you can probably find something to watch, but forget about actually having a movie in mind and finding it on there.  Way too little shit.

I've never even heard of Zip. Either it's not available in Manitoba, or they've just done a really piss poor job of advertising it here.
