I can not wait for a new hockey season to start, except I am not entirely sure I want to root for the Dallas Stars after their free management stupidities. It is a serious non-fortune that Tom Hicks still owns the Stars.

I still think Spain should have lost. I am not fond of the country.

Baseball was never anything I got into. Hockey and basketball are ones I've actually tried watching on TV but lost interest in. Football was something my parents always watched so I was naturally exposed to it. I'll occassionally watch a game or two but that's about it. Soccer came about because of all the Spanish-language channels here, so there's inevitably a game on and I got bored one afternoon (no cable tv or internet at the time) so I watched it.

I think the United States would be much more accepting of professional soccer if there was less crying and theatrical rolling on the ground every time someone's foot got stepped on.

Also, fix that f'ed up method of timekeeping.

So my team, the Dallas Stars, is letting go of Mike Modano. He might end up as a Red Wing. I grew up watching Mo. I would have to root for the Wings if he went there and it would be a good choice for him. It makes me sick to my stomach that I might be rooting for the Wings.

I think Soccer will catch on in the US, but it's going to take a few more generations. The reason I think this is because of the gradual decline of intelligence in this country. Back in the 20-30s, Baseball was the end all beat all. America's game. But Baseball is a complex sport. It's like playing chess on a field. I mean when do you bunt, do you intentionally walk a guy? Have your scouts done their job and told your pitcher what a hitter can't hit? Do you play your defenders deep or in on a play? I mean it's all about a Manger trying to make moves to counter the other manger while making his moves and hope the other guy can't figure it out. This however is getting too complex for people, and so Americans have started moving to simpler games like Football and Basketball. Pretty soon these games will be too complex too, and then Soccer will get it's foothold here.

I would contend that American football isn't a simple game at all and there's nearly as much chess being played there. However, I'll certainly agree with you that people don't often give baseball the credit it's due. I've always been a fan of the game, but I think I really started appreciating it more when I had a pretty significant paradigm shift in...hrm, muct have been my late teens or early 20's. It was then when I realized that the hitter, in effect, is the defensive player. He's there protecting the strike zone and doing his damndest to prevent the pitcher from throwing the ball into it unimpeded.

Yeah the most important thing in Baseball is to be the ball in play. But most people just want to see Big Papi hit home runs. Problem is that doesn't win games.

Well I don't mean to insult Football or people that really like the game. I'm just speaking of the shift in America. Up till the 50-60s Baseball was America's game, but more and more as time goes on that mantle seems to be being passed to Football. I'm just speaking of Football and Basketball from the stand point of the casual watcher. Football has more happening in a quicker amount of time and thus is better for the shorter and shorter attention spans that come with the de-evolution of the country. There is a big difference between the person that really likes football because of the game and the person that just likes it better then Baseball because Baseball is "Boring". There attention spans can't handle the game anymore, they need something shiny flashing in front of their faces at all times and Football delivers on that better then the slower paced Baseball. But as I said I think even Football will end up being too slow and complex and then Americans will start to move to Soccer. I just hope I'm dead when it happens.

I've noticed a similar trend in movies as well. Most of the classic movies of the golden age of Hollywood would be way to boring for viewers these days. They'd have to fast forward through things cause it's just too boring, and they can't appreciate the more subtle story lines in front of them. They need Michael Bay to come in a blow something up every 10 mins to keep them into it.

Well, to be fair, not everyone wants to watch a sport to think. Just like not everyone wants to watch a movie to think. When I want something to think about, I typically don't turn to either one. Not that I don't agree that there's a huge assortment of crap being made. I saw less than three minutes of the last Die Hard a while back and was all "what the fuck is this shit". So many things happened in those few minutes I'm convinced it was made for people with ADHD. In fact, every other movie is made for either crows who need shiny things exploding or rendered in 3D and boors who need 90 minutes of farts and/or tits. There's also what I like to call "Standard Bland Middle Class White Male Comedy" which usually stars Steve Carell in some way, shape, or form.

True, but I still don't think it's reason it will finally be accepted by America as a whole. And I don't make a connection with intelligence and immigrants bringing a sport with them. In poorer countries I think it's a whole different issue. It's a simple game that is cheap to play. An open field and an ball and you have a game. Course Baseball has taken hold in many South American countries very strongly as well.

Yes, they do, BUT more and more are turning to Football. In Northern Mexico Universities are offering full football programs which are outfunding soccer programs, and already those Universities are lining up to put players in the NFL.
