Writing is a feast of famine career. Given he is most know for writing a cartoon in 86, I'd say the guy was in a extended famine. That sort of job is suppose to be a stop over for bigger and better things, not the end all beat all.

Royalties? And probably not. I don't think cartoon writers now get deals that sweet, let alone in the 80's.

Doubt it, the average royalty is pennies. The only people who make serious bank from them are people like Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.

I was under the impression that where cartoons are concerned a writer's work more or less became the royalty-free property of whatever company made the show.

Depends on what kind of contract he signed. Doubt it contained royalties though, and even if it did it would only be a few cents per DVD set, probably wouldn't top a thousand a year.
