I only like dry rub BBQ, because the stuff with the sauce on it is sweet and I don't like it sweet.

Not when I apply it, I'm gentle.
I said its hot outside let me go swimming in your eyes;
We been running for awhile. Why don't you lay dow, I'll make you smile.
I could never ask for nothing better than this;
It's just tequila and the beach, it's quite salty when we kiss.

What? I was talking about applying a dry rub to a brisket before letting it smoke for 12 hours. You gotta have the pink smoke ring, or else you fucked it up and it's inedible. INEDIBLE!

It was a tie between that & Silver Chair for me - SC narrowly edged because a couple of the scenes creeped me out in my tender years.

That picture of food is making ME hungry.

I remember the Dawn Treader as being one of my favorite books in the series. I think I enjoyed the whole idea of exploring the uncharted seas. Plus, that douchebag Eustance eventually gets his when he gets turned into the dragon, although I don't think I'd be whining about being a dragon, I'd be burning shit down and owning that mideval world.

I can't remember what other book I liked just as much, but I think it was the horse and his boy, after looking them all up.

Wikipedia's article says the christian themes were unintentional. There's mention that there's other mythologies weaved into the stories as well. I figure the only way you'd notice Christian themes in the books or movies is if you were actually looking hard for them.

I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

It's a matter of perspective.  There were themes in the Lord of the Rings books that could be looked upon as Christian, too, but it doesn't make the work the same as Pilgrim's Progress.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

DUDE.

I gave my parents Narnia because the man did have some truly Christian works, so I said fine, maybe he did it but didn't want people to know or some bullshit like that.

However, I have literally argued with my parents about LOTR. Even if Tolkein came back across the seas from Elf-land and told them to their face, they would still argue the books were Christian-themed. ITS RIDICULOUS. FML

See, that's just it.  Tolkien outright denies the allegorical nature of his work, but that only means that those picked out by the observant were unintentional, not that they don't exist.  People find themes of conservationism, the dread of war, and the hope of faith.  And these make sense, as Tolkien himself was a Roman Catholic environmentalist who lost most of his young friends in World War I.  He can't claim with honesty that his writings were not influenced even in the smallest way by the important notions which hold sway in his life.

But here's where any reason to obsess over it falls apart:  sure, you can champion the so-called Christian themes (humanity suffering under the lordship of a fallen yet superior despot--Sauron--and his fell band--Nazgul, Orcs, et. al.; overcoming temptation out of dedication to an ideal; the setting apart/sanctification of the Fellowship; the crowning of the king at the dawn of a new age; etc.) of the work, but that requires one to also deal with the clearly occultic themes (the garnering of powet through talismans--the rings; use of "magical" arts to direct actions and do battle; use of runes as basis of most languages within the work; superior created beings who physically and directly interact with and among mortal men while imparting gnostic insights of another realm, a "spirit" world; etc.) that can be seen side-by-side with them.  In fact, I know many Christians who would not approve of the books/films for this very reason.  Then again, they probably disapprove of Masters of the Universe, too, so I don't necessarily hold with them on that.

In the end, it's totally unimportant.  People read into things what they will, but, so what?  It has nothing to do with it as taken at face value.  It's just something to talk about and keep something going.  And that's a given in any group of devotees, whether the LOTR fandom, Christians, and particularly a combination of the two.  But it's no reason to get bent out of shape over it, either.  Yes, such themes do exist, but they aren't really important in any meaningful way.

Did I blame the sack of Osgiliath on homosexuality in Gondor? Or the fall of Fornost with Arnor's acceptance of Rhun religions? No.

Also, Children of Hurin was not a bad read. Perhaps a film adaptation of this will happen in the far future. Or not.

I enjoyed it, too.  But I'm very much wary of anything from the Silmarillion or its coterie of works ever being brought to film.  It'd be lovely if it worked, but it'd most likely come out a mess...just way too spread out over time.

Well, since Hurin was a full on novel it's likely to have a better state. Having a recognizable foe the entire time helps (the dragon, I don't feel like looking shit up right now). I don't feel like they could capture some of the emotion from the book, but I felt that way about LotR proper as well, and I was greatly surprised.

A word of note, if you're going to get your friend who has never really even heard of LotR to watch the films, do no used the extended version. You will fail.

Disagreed.  I'd think Hurin would be nonsense to those who'd never read Silmarillion.

Coincidentally, the EE is what got me into the whole thing.  I never saw the theatrical version of Fellowship...I saw my brother's copy of it right before Two Towers came out.  After TTT pissed me off (due to having no start or end), I bought the combined books and read them over the course of a week, eventually reading most of the early stuff.
