Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1929!!!
« on: Sep 24, 2008, 05:43:17 PM »
The way the news organizations have been talking about this, it's like it's Judgement Day.

D, Why do you always have to post about old news?

Because no one else has. :D

And I have found a loophole around the fact that I can't make new topics anymore, because my new topic button is missing. Of course, I have a feeling this loophole will be closed up shortly, but it's been a fun run.

And since I've had a real shitty day today, and had to deal with some real bullshit, I don't give a shit about anything else at all anymore! Fuck the world, let's party until we're dead!  :guitar:
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

This is exactly why the ability to make new topics was taken away from you.  Why the hell would you reply to Merla in a completely different topic?  And the majority of your topic isn't even  about the financial crisis.  You just use it as an excuse to make a topic, be a braggart, and then proceed to whine.  You're a wank.

I'll voice a few thoughts from a financial industry employee perspective if anyone is interested - if not, I'd just as soon not think about it any more than I have to.   :(

A few random ponderings -

If no one takes anything else away from this situation, please take the following.  Engrave it somewhere, tattoo it on an unused body part, whatever.  It may save you someday.

Just as you cannot dig your way out of a physical hole, you cannot spend yourself out of a financial hole.  Borrow, perhaps, if done carefully, but not spend.

When war was declared on Iraq, no possibility other than the US being considered blessed deliverers and oil flowing like water in gratitude was considered.  The war was supposed to "pay for itself", remember?  No conserving resources, cutting back on luxuries, rationing, war bonds, etc. because the war was extremely unpopular.  I'm not running down the Bush admin. at this point - what's done is done, and they felt that actively promoting no change in anyone's lifestyle - in fact, just the opposite - was valuable in order to keep up morale.  But the seeds of what has come to fruition were planted in this mentality.

Spending money like a drunken sailor is not "patriotic". People were encouraged to spend money they didn't have after 9/11.  Add that to corporate greed for a toxic result.  The more money spent, the better the profits news, the greater the consumer confidence, the better the stock market did, and the more money the CEOs made.  Enron was an extreme example - performance results were frankly lied about in order to manipulate the market.

Credit is an earned privelege, not a right.  Debt-to-income ratios guidelines are not the enemy.  Very few people have an ironclad guarantee that they will have a job 3 years from now, let alone be making xxx amount more, which is the theory behind ARMs (adjustable rate mortgages).  So was a future sound credit environment and steady housing value.  One's monthly mortgage/rent should ideally be a maximum of 30% of gross income - loans were being made for 50% of income from the get-go!  Once again, greed.  Get that commission chell - what happens in 3 years is the home buyer's problem.  Yes, everyone should know what he/she can or cannot afford, but I find that not a lot of people are taught economic basics.  This should start with a kid's first allowance.

Part of the current problem is that huge firms with fingers in other pies have so many of these holdings.   AIG couldn't be allowed to fail.  I'm not nervous about this deal because I know something about AIGs assets; for example, the airplane leasing business that may be on the block for anywhere from $30 to $50 billion.  The $85 billion figure is a loan, not a gift, at over 11% interest.  The company is now helmed by an individual whose goal is to pay back that loan as quickly as possible.   I think the government will make a couple of bucks on the deal.

I think some regulation should be loosened instead of tightened.  There are plenty of private-equity firms with a lotta cash that love to take a big stake in some of these financial firms, but owning more than 25% means signing on for banking regulation rules, which would mess up other holdings.    Yes, some firms will become extremely wealthy, but some will actually use this powet for good.   It wouldn't be the first time private firms/individuals have saved everyone's bacon - Houston's own Jesse Jones kept the city afloat during the Depression.  Many mega-wealthy people do have a sense of responsibility toward the community - let them express it.

Back on the regular folk level?  I'm like a CD skipping over a smudge.  SAVE MONEY.  Be it $10 or $1000 a month, make yourself as independent of borrowing money from other people (i.e. credit) as possible.  Yes, we have a mortgage, but it's 7% of our income.  We have a car note, but it's on a Toyota I plan to keep until it croaks and not an Audi.  It's never too late to live below one's means with something as little as skipping lunch out to have an extra $25 a month to put on the credit card debt or the school loan.  If I can offer any guarantee, it's that Something WILL Go Wrong.   Empower yourself.

Suze Orman has a lot of good common-sense advice, and she can be amusing.  If her voice grates too much to watch her show, get one of her books. :P

Also, do NOT be late on payments!  Credit is going to tighten up worse than Wal-Mart jeans in hot water.  Better to make a minimum payment on time that a triple payment two days late.

Heh - don't think we're not buying a lottery ticket every week.  Someone has to win, and I don't even want a mega-jackpot.  I could do a lot with a couple million.  ;D

I'll reserve my opinion of the bailout until I see the final plan, but one thing I haven't heard mention of is making some provisions  for one of the basic principles of the free-market system, which is equity.  The government (taxpayers) make a loan, they should get an equity stake in the firms they rescue.  Carmax Finance owns an equity in my little blue darling until I pay off the loan - why should the people I loan my tax dollars to be any different?

A little off topic, but when exactly will I get my thread starting privileges again?

And it's kinda disappointing because I wanted to ask if anyone watched that abomination of the new Knight Rider Wed, seeing I missed it.

And I love Suze Orman.  She, Dr. G, IMF, and the Venture Bros. are the few things on cable I actually miss.

You'll never get them back!  I didn't even do anything related to editing to have my editing privileges taken! They were taken on the premise that I might edit something months ago and I still don't have them back!  You actually abused something so it's a probably a life sentence.

Under the current deal, 20% of the $700B goes to ACORN.  As if I needed another reason to resent this attempt at socializing the credit industry.

The primary problems, Fanny and Freddie (named after a quaint slang term for peoples' asses and the kerchief'ed Scooby Doo character voiced by Frank Welker), are already government owned.  They should be broken up and sold off to the highest bidder.  The mark-to-market laws should be made inactive until the crisis subsides.  The fed should insure the loans, not buy them up...it's not like the properties are without value or won't rebound over time.  Otherwise people like Warren Buffet wouldn't have made huge investments in the market over the past several days.  Do you think he's the type to flush money down the toilet?  No way!

All that $700B does is postpone the problem and put the government further in hock to foreign interests and screws taxpayers.  The only reason I can see why they want this bill is to use the money from selling the properties to pay for all those expensive social programs being proposed by certain presidential and congressional candidates, at least to start with.

Guess what life altering condition I have?? It involves test strips and insulin shots!

I have to go though the blood tests to confirm but I'm basically fucked, I have way over the normal amount of glucose in my system.. For all you people wishing my death I'm now that much closer to kicking the bucket.

Not even sure how I have it, I'm not significantly overweight and I don't eat fast food that much. I guess my pancreas or liver just decided to screw me over.

Now time to call liberty medical!
