Whatever happened to a official politics thread?

So now Voting for Obama means voting for a terrorist and a Muslim. Because we all know Muslims are all terrorists.

And Joe the Plumber? He's a fake too, according to a local Ohio newspaper.

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081016/NEWS09/810160418

Quote
"Joe the Plumber" isn’t a plumber — at least not a licensed one, or a registered one.

A chell of state and local licensing agencies in Ohio and Michigan shows no plumbing licenses under Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher’s name, or even misspellings of his name.

Mr. Wurzelbacher told reporters Thursday morning that he worked for Newell Plumbing & Heating Co., a small local firm whose business addresses flow back to several residential homes, including one on Talmadge Road in Ottawa Hills.

According to Lucas County Building Inspection records, A. W. Newell Corp. does maintain a state plumbing license, and one with the City of Toledo, but would not be allowed to work in Lucas County outside of Toledo without a county license.

Mr. Wurzelbacher said he works under Al Newell’s license, but according to Ohio building regulations, he must maintain his own license to do plumbing work.

He is also not registered to operate as a plumber in Ohio, which means he’s not a plumber. [either that, or he's doing plumbing illegally without a license]

Mr. Wurzelbacher said he objects to Mr. Obama’s plans to raise income taxes on incomes above $250,000. He said he makes no where near that much money but he would not say how much he makes or if he ever expects to make $250,000. Court records from a divorce show Mr. Wurzelbacher made $40,000 in 2006.

I don't see how someone working as a plumber could make $250k a year by themselves.

Also, according to him, socialism is evil. Awesome.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

No, just the ones who actually emulate the prophet rather than pay him lip service.

And Joe the Plumber? He's a fake too, according to a local Ohio newspaper.

The moral of this story is that you'd better have your shit together before you question the sapience of the Barak of Obama.  Too bad they don't vet the likes of Bill Ayers in this fashion.

I don't see how someone working as a plumber could make $250k a year by themselves.

Never paid for plumbing service, eh? :P  Besides, he didn't say he made $250K, just that the business he hoped to own will, and thus he would have been thrust into Obama's magic bracket.  But now that he's been found out, not only will he not buy out the business, but he's out of work, period.

Also, according to him, socialism is evil. Awesome.

According to me, it is indeed evil.  It also isn't how you strengthen an economy.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

That Bill Ayes nonsense is getting childish.  Ronald Reagan certainly had a closer relationship with Sidney "The Fixer" Korshak than working with him on an educational project, but I doubt he was stupid enough to call the mouthpiece of the Chicago Mafia for national policy advice.  Considering I was with a Republican atheist night and day for over 11 years, I really don't put too much credence in the influence of unwise past associations.

Were I a Republican advisor, I would tell the GOP to quite throwing good money after bad and channel any last-minute McCain/Palin campaign blizt funds into keeping Senate seats.

And now that I have a few moments, let's talk about old Joe, the erstwhile plumber.  From what I've read, he can't seem to decide if this venture will earn him $250K in income, or if the business will be worth that.  If the latter, his personal income may not be $250K, unless his partner is independently wealthy and working just for fun, kind of like Marie Antoinette dressing like a peasant and milking cows.

If the business is worth $250K, is he projecting that to be the value after his deductions?  Let's look at a short list of what a small business can deduct:

Business Vehicle - I assume he isn't going to tote tools in a backpack and ride the bus

Start-Up Costs - capital expense - $5000 the first year.

Education expenses - any class or seminar related to one's trade

Legal or professional fees - will it be an inc. or LP? An S corporation? Better call your attorney!

New Equipment - can be done in year purchased or phased over several years.

Taxes - employment taxes (not if filing as self-employed, but this is countered by deducting health insurance premiums) & real estate taxes on property used for business, to name a couple

Advertising & promotion - no , he doesn't get to count his free time on TV

Office supplies & furniture - furniture is 100% deductible this year

Interest - interest & carrying costs for business purchases or personal loans related to the business.

Plus phone service, software & computer expenses, postage, business association dues (that will come in handy when he's licensed), casualty & theft losses and his subscription to Plumber's Monthly.  Don't forget the coffee service.

Now, if he's talking about grossing $250K himself in personal income, all is still not lost.  Is Joe single?  Does he have any children under 25 or any dependent relatives for which he pays 50% of expenses?  I believe I heard he had remarried, so let's look at that scenario and assume he has no dependents.  In fact, let's give him a margin of error of about $10K because he's had a great year and a gross of $260K:

Filing jointly, he and his wife can take the standard $10,700 in deductions instead of struggling with itemizing (which could net an even bigger deduction). Shazaam!  Joe is only looking at paying taxes on $249,300.  Since Joe makes more than $117,300, he can't take the standard $6,800 for him and his wife and has to use the worksheet on Page 33 of the IRS booklet for line 42. This means he can only deduct $3,627 for the two of them, but even so, his taxable income is $245,673.  Home free!

Joe wouldn't have his 15 minutes, but he might be breathing a little easier regarding his working future if he had walked into an H & R Block office.... :)

Holy fuck do I ever wish the election were today.  I hate being a battleground state.  I can't turn on a tv or listen to the radio for five minutes without being inundated with political ads telling me what a horrible person John McCain is.

I mean more with policy... aside from the Jew killing (which everyone focuses on). FDR used Hitler-esque policies (manipulating the legislature, packing the courts, etc.) and the Obama/Biden ticket (also McCain Palin but I really don't care about them) will continue Bush's abuse of the executive office. The President is NOT the American king. He is a third of our powet, not 100%.

I'm buying a gun.

Okay, I'll bite - what exactly has been said that  makes you believe abuses will continue?  Any in particular?

I have to give Obama credit for two things: not being a loose-cannon hothead and not being shy about asking and taking advice from older and wiser minds than his.  That in itself is a 180.

They both voted for amnesty for the wiretapping, really hasn't voted against Bush, the Democrats (Mainly the ones who supported him wholeheartedly) refused to impeach Bush and Cheney in 2007, Obama's advisors are deeply invested in maintaining current foriegn policy with regards to military actions and economics. The only thing I see Obama 'Changing' is allowing the Democrats to legislate in the house and 'trying' (I disagree with his advisor's tax policies) to fix the economy.

Not sure what real good trying to impeach Bush & Cheney would do this late in the game, as much as I'd like to see them tarred & feathered.

There is always election-year cowardice on the part of every candidate.  I don't agree with it, but in the immunity situation, the AG can petition the judges overseeing the anti-warrantless wiretapping suit for dismissal of charges, and the provision can then be challenged as unconstitutional.  Considering some of the other yea votes, I'm wondering if the revised agreement isn't simply in order to put off the fight to another day.  No one is naive enough to think this will just disappear.

I think we're going to see a huge state of flux regarding most foreign policy on all fronts.  Consider how the definition of "global economy" has changed, even since 1991.  Problem with housing the biggest economic players in the world is how many other pies those fingers can spoil.  What a candidate thinks and what a President does are often very different.  I wouldn't be making any momentous foreign policy proclamations at present either, especially considering how the mere notion of sitting down and talking to people got him in hot water.

No, I don't think Obama is the Messiah or the perfect candidate.  But I do think he has a better handle on the fine art of patient observation than the other choice.  I've had quite enough of decisions fueled by rage and hot tempers.

It had to do with executive priviledge. Bush and Cheney redefined how the President operatates and it directly contradicts the constitution. Had there been no strong Democratic canidate, the legislature would right now be impeaching them and setting precedent that this abuse of powet is unacceptable. They haven't, instead they're seduced and cannot wait to have Bush/Cheney's throne for their own personal use. I don't understand why Kucinich supported Obama.

And the President doesn't affect the economy, laws passed by the legislature do. Foriegn policy won't affect anything, so I don't understand how people can buy into either canidate professing their ability to 'change' when the real change will occur with laws. We have all these frickin lawyers for a reason, right!? >.< Fucking sheep.

I disagree. The man right now with the most in common with John McCain is Barrack Obama. They're the same creature cut from the same cloth. When I see them, I see Jack Johnson and John Jackson from Futurama.

So Hillary shouldn't have run? Or is she in some different category?  And do you really, really think she of all people would have been leading the charge for impeachment, considering how narrowly her husband escaped it and all the "who committed the worse abuse of office and public trust" bickering it would bring up?  That's the last thing she would want any potential voters to be thinking about.  Please.

Many ACLU gatherings have.

Look, I'm not any happier about the Hillary Bosnia sniper fire kerfluffle or anything else than you are. I was front & center for her in both the primary and the caucus (on a dislocated knee, might I add).  I'm not going to change anyone's opinion. I just don't see panic as a strategic option for either November or my investments.

Personally, considering the political leanings of both Big Oil and Big Insurance, Eddie & I stand to profit more from a McCain/Palin victory (I did mention that both our firms have the same running joke, right? ""Republican' and 'raise' both begin with 'R'") - probably about $23K+ more next year, judging from past history and adjusting for percentages of current gross salaries.  We can't do it.  We can't participate in bringing about what most evidence we've seen shows to be another term of Bush policies.  I really don't give a shit who thinks me the most ignorant idealist ever born.  I can't do it.

Regardless, I will never take my ability to vote lightly.  Read about Alice Paul and Lucy Burns sometime, or watch the HBO movie "Iron Jawed Angels".   I wouldn't do it on a full stomach if you have any regard whatsoever for women.

According to me, it is indeed evil.  It also isn't how you strengthen an economy.

Ah yes, and capitalism is somehow not evil?

Before you start running around kissing the ass of capitalism and disregarding socialism altogether, let's look at what our current capitalistic system has brought us.

- A large majority of the wealth and money in possession of only about 5% of the population.
- Foreclosed homes and homeless middle class.
- A shitty, crime ridden urban landscape with bad schools and no jobs.
- Jobs being shipped to other countries, because they pay their employees in Mexico $1 an hour.
- High gas prices.
- Banks collapsing as people can't pay their mortgages
- The stock market almost collapsing.
- A possible future recession (if we're not in one already)

So yes, a system that's currently founded on the worship of money and materialism and the acquisition and accumulation of wealth is the best damn system in the world. Keep telling yourself that. Socialism may not be perfect either but in some ways it could be better than what we have now.

Also, Socialism != Communism. Communism is a form of socialism, but they're not entirely the same thing. And the so called Communist states formed during the 20th century are not true Communist states either.

I liked how in Family Guy the Nazi was wearing a McCain/Palin button.

Did you watch American Dad afterwards? If you didn't, you missed Stan and his Picard-Boss in fursuits at a furry con. I was rolling.

I also think Tom's defense of the McCalin ticket is because of his unnatural lust for older christian women in glasses and 60's hair buns.

I just can't support Obama. Hillary and the Clinton-side of the Democratic party would have changed things (DLCistas as it is). The mainstread DNC is just too blach for me to support. Clinton =/= Obama, trust me. Hillary would never have kept Bush's powers around, she wouldn't need them. Bill didn't.

The mainstream DNC is just too black for me to support.

At least, that's what I thought you said.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Yes, because I hate Obama, I hate niggers.

I voted for Cynthia McKinney. :p I don't like Obama, Pelosi, or Harry Reid. Reid's the type of guy who'd apologize if his asshole was too dry after a good dicking, and Pelosi would set it up. Obama would cheer on if they both told him too. I hope Hillary gets the Senate Majority Leader position.

And now that I have a few moments, let's talk about old Joe, the erstwhile plumber.

Yeah, apparently simply asking a question concerning a possible future decision that, given a little energon and a lot of luck, might put him in a much, much higher bracket than currently exists is too dastardly for you people to abide.

I don't know how I missed this, but here goes.

According to me, it is indeed evil.  It also isn't how you strengthen an economy.

Ah yes, and capitalism is somehow not evil?

It's called the real world.  It's not fair, and it tends to be cruel.  But at least it gives you a shot, whereas the other sets the bar for everyone and takes from those who exceed that level and gives to those who don't.  Maybe that's okay for underachievers such as yourself, but it's bullshit to me.

Before you start running around kissing the ass of capitalism and disregarding socialism altogether, let's look at what our current capitalistic system has brought us.

...

So yes, a system that's currently founded on the worship of money and materialism and the acquisition and accumulation of wealth is the best damn system in the world. Keep telling yourself that. Socialism may not be perfect either but in some ways it could be better than what we have now.

"A large majority of the wealth and money in possession of only about 5% of the population."  Big deal!  When the vast majority of the remaining percentage still live better than a goodly portion of the rest of the globe, who gives a fuck?  You operate under the assumption that all these damn dirty rich people got everything by hook or crook, or by inheriting it from someone who did.  Sure, some of them did, but most didn't.  And just because they got out and got after it to make that money doesn't mean some socialistic asshole government has the right to take it away from them to give to whoever else for whatever reason.

"Foreclosed homes and homeless middle class."  Really?  Have the homeless ranks swollen that much?  Capitalism isn't at fault for that: government interference, however, to a large extent is....things like the Sarbanes/Oxley Act of 2002 (passed by a Republican Congress) that froze the credit industry due to immediate mark-to-market share devaluation, the Community Reinvestment Act (originating from the dark days of Carter) that opened credit to people who often couldn't afford to pay their bills (leading to "predatory" loans), and pressure from the Clinton administration (supported on local level by ACORN and its cat's paw Obama) to further expand loans to lower and moderate income borrowers being chiefly to blame.

"A shitty, crime ridden urban landscape with bad schools and no jobs."  Crime is a problem that isn't solved by putting everyone on the same crappy level.  And Guliani showed how to work that out.  And schools?  You're talking about the most socialist system in America, hush yo' mouf!

"Jobs being shipped to other countries, because they pay their employees in Mexico $1 an hour."  Maybe if the tax code wasn't so byzantine and punitive, there'd be more reason to stay rather than move headquarters to more friendly business venues.  As for those sacred cow jobs, interestingly enough, people seem to continue to find ways to be employed, as the percentage of unemployed nationwide isn't as bad as it has been in the past when such jobs were plentiful.

"High gas prices."  Oh, you mean as opposed to what they pay in Canada and Europe, right?  Get serious.  Even at their worst, they couldn't compare.  The speculators are abandoning the market now that people have voluntarily begun to conserve and sectors of the government are amenable to promoting new drilling and subsidizing alternative sources of energy.

"Banks collapsing as people can't pay their mortgages."  See my reply to your second so-called point.  BTW, how many banks have collapsed, exactly?  And what would happen if they did?  Oh, yeah, a better bank would buy their shit up and manage it better.  God damn that capitalism!

"The stock market almost collapsing."  It's happened before; it'll happen again.  And it'll recover again.  But putting in another New Deal won't solve it...like before, it'll retard any efforts to get back on track by taking away people's incentives to excel and take personal risks for possible great gains.

"A possible future recession (if we're not in one already)."  Again, you're repeating yourself.  Been there, done that, wash, rinse, repeat.

So the fact remains that the only things our government really does well is tax and blow shit up, in order of rigorousness.

Also, Socialism != Communism. Communism is a form of socialism, but they're not entirely the same thing. And the so called Communist states formed during the 20th century are not true Communist states either.

There really isn't much of a difference aside from one being totalitarian and the other retaining a pretense of personal liberty.  But without economic freedom, the rest doesn't count for awful much.  Everything boils down to the golden rule: he who has the gold makes the rule.  And then the slippery slope concept applies: the former establishes government as the arbiter of who is allowed to have what, and that's the first step to the latter.
