The sitch:

The fundamentalist elder nephew I rarely mention moved to Nashville in June when his boss got a calling to work for another church. He is 24 with 2 busted engagements in his past, both cut off by the girls who did return the rings. Fast forward to this past August - he meets a girl at the church and decides to get engaged. My sister, who can deny him nothing (they're still paying for his car insurance!), just told me that she's giving him our paternal grandmother's beautiful Edwardian white gold engagement ring - has a 1.5 carat center diamond with two half-carat stones on either side - to have sized down for the latest fiancee' because he doesn't have the money for a new one.

I adore my younger nephew and used to feel the same about the elder until he beat my sister up on the doorstep of our father's house about a week after he died. He also refuses to spend any holidays with me unless I leave Eddie at home because we're sinners, so we haven't had a family Christmas or Thanksgiving since 1996.

So tell me - am I out of line for not wanting my grandmother's ring handed over in this manner to a girl he's known for TEN WEEKS?

Honestly, that's ridiculous. Of course, my parents only knew each other for six weeks before the hitched (not engaged, full thing), so it can happen. But it's not bloody likely. I say protest.

A white gold ring to some whore he met at church? Yeah, scream about it. Hide the ring or something if you have to. Why can't he just re-use one of the rings that got thrown back at him? If he went and pawned them, well, tough shit. You can get an engagement ring for $20. If she really loves him, she'll understand that he can't afford anymore.

Well, so much for diplomacy. She's defensive about it, which means she has the same concerns as I, but already we've reached the "Well, if YOU had children, you would understand" point, so fuck it. At least I've planted the seed of a pre-nup for the ring.

Then again, as my best buddy pointed out, it's easy to make a ring smaller; not so easy to make it larger again. If the ring is cut down to a 5, there's no way my sister can wear it, so if they break up, no one will be able to wear it but me.

And if the chick takes off with it, she'll have no one to blame but herself.

Thanks. I feign indifference, but Thanksgiving used to be one of my favorite holidays. Ironic that the last good TG day was with said nephew & my dad who didn't want to do anything traditional because he missed my mom too much. Everyone else had the flu, so we went to Kemah and had seafood on the wharf. Fuck a turkey.

That's what I would do, but now she's craving grandchildren, so no price or bribe is too high. My joy at knowing that this will never be me brings a tear to my eye at times. Unfortunately, all of the elders in our family were rabid smokers, so our beloved aunt who was the last bastion of respected opinion died a few years after our dad.

On a side note, she was really amazing. Went to England 2-3 times a year, got a Nintendo when she was 75 and told me after my marriage broke up, "Oh,don't put yourself through that again anytime soon! Just take lovers!"

Oh I see. Meatsack madness. My stupid dad was apparently telling my mom, or rather conveying, the regret that he currently has no grandchildren. I reckon he got the infection from his tramp Lynnda, whose children have already further spawned. Who gives a shit? I swear, most people don't actually want the kids, they just want the damn trophies. And even if I shat out kids, he's one of the last people I would want to expose them to.
