Help Me, IDE!
« on: Jul 26, 2008, 02:21:15 PM »
I want to be just like you but without all the muscles and sex.  Well some sex would be nice.  Anyhow I mean I want to be in super shape.  I've all ready lost 15 pounds since March, watching my portions and walking at least 3 times a week.  I need some advice.  What kind of work outs do you do and How often do you work out?  What kinds of food do you eat on a regular basis?  I know I would have to modify because I'm a woman, I just need to get a general idea.  Thanks.

Sex burns alot of calories.

Lean protien (skinless chicken breast, fish, turkey), whole veges (broccoli, carrots, spinach, onion, beets), whole fruit (berries, bananas, tomatoes, apples, citrus), lean yogurt and milk, whole grain cereals, lotsa beans and nuts.

As per exercize, repetition is key, get your body used to working out and you'll burn more calories and speed up your metabolism.

Yeah I eat what tom said mostly.  If you're trying to lose weight then you should do a lot of running/jogging.  I'm a little chubby right now actually (I have tennis elbow so I can't lift).  I start physical therapy monday.

Normally I lift 5-6 times a week and run every other day for about 15 minutes.  As far as lifting goes my program is pretty weird and probably not suited for a woman.

If you want to take what you've been doing to the next level try to work your way up to 15 minutes of cardio every other day.   Start by adding light jogging for 5-7 minutes into your walk routine and work your way up from there.  As you condition yourself you'll be able to do more and more to the point where you're running for 10 minutes and so on.  The final level is this new experimental HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) where you run for 1 minute then jog for one minute then run then jog etc.

I guess for lifting you can do light weight (something you can lift 10-12 times) to tone up.  If you lift heavy everyone will expect you to tank and get mad when you announce you're fury.

Merla dear, don't ask a guy for advice about losing weight. Their metabolisms are way different than ours. But IDE was kind of right. Eat proteins, not that much though. Some fats are good for our metabolism, after all we are women, we need a lot of fat in our systems (not  sat-fat though). If you don't want to do exercise, just walk around. Dance if you want, that helps a lot. Not need to dance in nightclubs, but by yourself. PM me and I'll give you some dance videos that you'll like. It' s all about toning the right muscles, you don't want to end up looking like Madonna. Cardio is good, don't do a lot of weights if you don't want to gain muscle weight (i gained 5 kgs when i used to go to the gym)

Cardio is good, don't do a lot of weights if you don't want to gain muscle weight (i gained 5 kgs when i used to go to the gym)

On the other hand, with every pound of lean muscle mass you put on, you're upping your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories.

Apparently, if you want lean muscle and not just bulk, you should stretch before and after lifting.  :)

I sympathize with ya Merla. I have a unique problem though: I can't do a lot of running/jogging. Between my hips and tight achilles tendons, lots of running/jogging makes me limp for about a day afterward with lots o' ankle pain. I'm thinking of an exercise bike personally.

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

Stretching supposedly does help you build muscle but it's got nothing to do with bulking or not bulking.

You need to stretch anyway to get them myofibers warmed up so you don't wind up hurting yourself.

Yoga helps.
Yes. I've taken Yoga. I still do some of the stretches and breathing exercises. Remarkably helpful to keep you from strangling people.

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

Yoga's good if you're preparing your soul to enter the spirit world.  For actual exercise, try something like aerobics or something.

Hey IDE, how come you only run for 15 minutes? Why not more?

Best to run for at least 20-30, so you can get 2-4 miles out.

I've actually decided I am going to run more (especially for now since I have no choice since I can't do al lot of upper body).  I was stopping at 15 min because after that I got off the treadmill after that and did my lifting work out.  I also read somewhere that running much longer than that doesn't really make a huge difference, but I read that years ago and with most fitness info more than 3 years old it's probably been ruled false even though it worked for me.

While a senior in high school, I went from 270 to 220 after a regular weight regimen and three months of extensive running during football season (didn't lift much during that time).  I maintained a good level of fitness for several years before succumbing to the rigors of engineering study and lab/paperwork and finally topping at 265, where I'm at again.

The point being, I endorse running as an effective means of weight loss and maintenance.  Just keep doing it to some degree after you hit the goal.
