So today when I was sitting at work, i realized that in the three-and-a-half weeks I've had this job, I've seen my boss for a total of about five minutes. 

I started this job about two weeks after classes finished in the spring; i just wanted some time to do nothing before starting the 9 to 5 business.  When I start working, i'm informed that my boss is in new zealand and would be there for the next two weeks.  It's not really essential that I see him, as I'm just doing some research, but still, weird.  Anyway, he gets back a week ago, shows up for about five minutes and leaves again.  Other than a couple emails we've exchanged, there's a total communication blackout.  I can't decide if this is the most ideal job in the world or if it's just exceedingly strange.  There's just this overriding sense of insecurity here, in that I've received zero commentary, positive or negative, about the work i've done so far.

I wonder if he'll show up tommorrow

Ok, so there are two sides of the coin here:
it matters if you are using this job to "mature" in the business, meaning, if you are searching for a mentor or something like that.
on the other hand, you have the "as long as he pays you, you shouldn't care" line. which is valid too.

In one hand you have the boss who really cares about his employees and interacts with them often, just to see how is everybody doing, and on the other hand you have one that "trust them enough" for him not deeming as necessary to stay around and checking their every move.

As I said, two different sides, both are valid.

Still, I work like 3 hours a week, I'll deal.

and faye, i guess my only real issue is that he didn't even come on my first day to explain what it is i'm even doing.  The job was described to me as 'some research,' and i guess i would have liked more clarity as to what exactly that meant.

My new boss is pretty hands off and so is her boss.  It feels kind of strange but I could get use to this.

I see the guy who is technically my boss about once every two weeks, if that much.  He figures that if my accounts are making money, my expense reports look legit, and he doesn't receive any complaint calls from my clients, I'm doing a great job.

Downside is that there will be no buffer if something does go wrong - it will be my problem to deal with.

Yeah.  The only interaction I have had thus far is my boss telling me what I'm doing has been wrong - partially.  No explanation as to what it is I should have been doing, no explanation even why the work I've done so far isn't up to par, just general dissatisfaction.

All of my bosses are big coke heads who are usually too hungover to tell us what to do.  We pretty much manage ourselves, though the majority of us have restaurant experience so it's not too hard.
