These Movies Are Worth Paying For
« on: Jul 20, 2008, 11:37:58 AM »
So in the past few weeks, I have actually paid to go to a theater to see WALL-E and The Dark Knight.  Both are totally worth paying for, mainly because they're the kind of movies you should see on a big screen.

WALL-E was adorable, but not too childish.  I think there were more adults in the theater when we went than kids.  Which was great because kids ruin everything.  It also had a great underlying message about us becoming fat slobs if we were to live in space.  Here, I thought the space cruise ships would be like the colonies in Gundam Wing where they recreated a whole city, but they're more like mega shopping centers.  The animation in this movie is incredible, you almost can't tell that it's all CG.

The Dark Knight was incredible!  Everything that has been said about Heath Ledger's take on the Joker was correct.  I couldn't even recognize him.  Heath wasn't the only good actor - Christian Bale and that guy from "Thank You for Smoking" were also amazing.  The whole movie was pretty much flawless and scary without being gorey.  I'm not a prude, but I'm sick of movies that disembowel people in every scene to scare audiences.  There was very little blood and I don't think I heard a single curse word, but that's what made it awesome.

If Heath Ledger gets nominated for an Oscar (which he probably will) and wins, I hope it's because of his role rather than him being dead.  Though I think somebody's going to have to pull out one hell of a performance to beat the Joker.

Movies Not Worth Paying For:  The Love Guru - I saw about 15 minutes of this on SideReel and stopped.  I probably would have demanded my money back if I went to a theater, although it's not the theater's fault.

Me and Kary are seeing the Dark Knight tomorrow afternoon in the Cinebistro. Giant, first-class leather seats, full bar and menu, and small seating for a normal screen = win.

I use it to preview movies, since if I don't like the first 15 minutes, why waste my money.

I'll give the Dark Knight a thumbs up as well. It was a little too long and could have had some fat trimmed away, but just about every moment Joker was on Screen is pure gold.

I'm probably going to see TDK tomorrow afternoon, and I'll probably be taking my nephews with me since they won't get a shot at seeing it otherwise.

I would have liked to have seen it at the premiere, but between work and other obligations it wasn't happening.

Oh Cinebistro is amazing. The chairs were huge and smelled of new car. The wine and beer was plentiful, and the popcorn came in awesome bowls. It was amazing. If you can, splurge and spend the 15 bucks a ticket. It's well worth it.

For that kind of service, $15 sounds good.

It was perfect. No one under 21, so no babies. Full-service bar and gourmet restaurant. Even the candy was better. Had me and Kary not eaten Japanese Hibachi before, we woulda ate there.

If I wanna wait a month or so after a movie comes out, I can see it for $2.50 at a theater that doesn't care if I bring my own food.

We used to have a dollar theater that ran movies after their theater run.  That didn't last long because the place went to shit because nobody took care of it.  Now it's an independent film theater... sort of.

Ha, even spending fifteen dollars is too much.  Unless that pays for two people.  I'm not paying that sort of money unless it's something I've been creamin' my seat to see for the past sixth months.  Shoot, matinee or student discount.  SA is a pretty low cost city, so it's never more than 8 bucks.

I wanna see the new Batman, but I haven't seen the first Bale Batman yet.  Does it matter if I see them out of order or what?

Also, I saw Hellboy II and Mongol.  Both are pretty to look at.  Hellboy kinda piddled along and Mongol might not be the cup of tea of anyone here.  Oh and Merla saw Wall-E and Hancock a couple of weeks back, and she told me she liked them both.

Not really. Scarecrow was the first villain, he got away. Gotham was a shithole ruled by the mob. Batman was in love with Rachael Dawes, but she doesn't really love him back. S'all you need to know.

Oh and the Batmobile is a abandoned Wayne  project for the Army. That'll come up in TDK and was part of the first film, but really you don't HAVE to see the first flick to get what is going on.

No.  At one point, their lineup was all major motion pictures (Indiana Jones, Narnia, etc) that I could see at the other theater.  I think there was one indie flick at playing at that time.  Whatever - I saw The Dark Side of the Rainbow there (where they play "Dark Side of the Moon" to Wizard of Oz)

It'd help, but I'm still reeling from the fact you haven't seen Begins, as it's one of the best comic movies ever.  TDK is a whole lot of awesome, but particularly so when viewed from the perspective of the pre-existing awesomeness of its predecessor.

Screw the theaters, just watch movies on TV like I do.

Actually, that might not always be a good thing... lately they've  been playing nothing but shitty Eddie Murphy movies lately. Daddy Day Care? Haunted Mansion? DO NOT WANT!

Last night I was watching Jerry Bruckheimer's King Arthur, which I'd call ho hum and a somewhat watchable ripoff of Braveheart. Only reason I liked that movie was Kiera Knightly running around in a skimpy outfit... and war paint! The movie was also historically accurate... except for the fact that Arthur and the Romans lost to the Anglo-Saxons.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

I don't know what that link is but it's taking too long.

King Arthur was crap.

I've seen all of the other Batmans and I used to watch TAS so I considered myself Batman'd out when the first flick came out.  I didn't really think I was missing anything.

plus, who needs an excuse to go out and see christian bale?

Me.  He ain't all that.  Creepy Cillian Murphy and Katie Holmes also being in that movie didn't help things either.
