Gas is only about $3.69 here, but I still take my bike everywhere because that's still too expensive.

Heard that.

The value of a dollar has more to do with the fact that lowered interest rates.  When the Federal Reserve reduced rates, the European Central Bank and other currency exchanges didn't reciprocate, so the difference caused reduced willingness to invest in the dollar because of less return on investment...while good for borrowers, it's bad for investers.  Also, with the proliferation of the euro and the diversification of portfolios with regard to currency holdings, there are more dollars on the market, which reduced their value (the rarer the product, the more value is ascribed to it...just like in collecting).

Because oil is traded in dollars, the reduced value of the dollar on the world market and increasing investment in other currencies such as the euro means paying more dollars for oil...as it does for other imports.  Inflation will become a problem in the near future.  The fact that China is on the same wavelength means product from there will retain the same general price relative to what it is now, but the fact that they're so heavily invested in them also means we have to pussyfoot with them so they don't liquidate their investments, dumping more dollars on the world market and making them worth about as much as Confederate money.

Now the good part is that U.S. manufacturing prospers because goods made here are cheaper abroad, spurring U.S. exports.  However, with U.S. manufacturing steadily moving out due to cheaper labor and less retarded and lower percentage tax structures found elsewhere, this isn't as good a situation as it used to be.  It also means that treasury bonds will be more attractive investments due to lower costs and higher interest yields, but mortgage rates will remain high.  Hopefully people'll concentrate on domestic investing and not mortgage everything to the hilt in the process.

The spending problem doesn't really factor into the weak dollar, just the local economy.  But here's something that should be noticed by every man, woman and child in this country: May spending was up and companies had more sales because of the stimulus checks that went out.  Basically, giving people more money causes them to spend more.  So explain how lowering taxes doesn't stimulate spending and investment?

I don't like that Obama bin Changin' wants to raise corporate taxes.  He also loses at "mandatory healthcare for children".  Fuck the children.  At least Hillary included everybody.  Even fricken Edwards did that much.

As for gas, bring back the electric car, bitches.  This need for big car and oil companies to make the rest of us suck at their tit when the tech exists is ridiculous.

I heard the us oil people are charging the same amount that opec is charging even though the oil isn't imported.  Is this true?  If so then some people need to be killed.

Edwards and Hillary have only supported him because they've had to.

The problem is that you still need oil to make the cheap-ass plastic the thing would be made of, and you'll need electricity made using fossil fuels (coal, natural gas) or nuclear powet.  There's still so much that must be addressed, but there's a good way and a bad way to jumpstart this.  Taxing the shit out of energy producers and jacking up prices in the meanwhile is the bad way.

I heard the us oil people are charging the same amount that opec is charging even though the oil isn't imported.  Is this true?  If so then some people need to be killed.

You're probably thinking about what Noire said about it on BONR.  The short version is that it's not that simple.

Oil is traded on an open market, and companies won't sell an openly-rated product significantly below market price, or they'd lose their ass.  Regulation could be used to reduce the amount they take in, but the problem with that is that any losses will invariably be passed on to the consumer.  Just deal with the fact that companies exist to make money; otherwise, you're looking at socialized oil, which would be more of a disaster than socialized health-care will be.  And the fact that they do make money is good for everyone who owns a mutual fund or IRA, as those accounts often invest in and therefore benefit from profits in the oil industry.

The open market is also where OPEC wields its powet...because it controls such a large percentage of oil output and monitors the output of other nations, it can restrict or increase production at will to control the prices.  This is where many get the idea that it'd do no good to drill on our own, because it'd be a drop in the bucket that wouldn't make much difference, and OPEC would change output to compensate.  Which I can't really fault them for, as oil production is pretty much all those asshats are good for with regard to the rest of the world.

However, there are at least two problems with the argument that it'd do no good.  First, it'd be a hell of a lot more than a drop in the bucket.  The U.S. is the third-largest oil producer in the world behind Russia and OPEC.  Considering the recent finds in the Rockies and availability in the Gulf of Mexico and ANWR, the U.S. could produce far, far more than it already is without fear of running out anytime soon.  And that doesn't even consider the absolutely enormous find off the coast of Brazil, a country that's already largely on an sugar cane ethynol economy and can now be energy independent as well as a huge exporter of oil.

Therefore, the impact of any retaliatory OPEC action will be minimized...not that they can afford to restrict oil reserves too much; they don't have anything else that makes money, except the tourism industry which is fucked because of crazy-ass terrorists running around lopping off the heads of the infidel.  And they can't drink oil to live, so they're over a barrel (or an oil drum, as the case may be) any way you look at it.

In addition to increasing supplies and marginalizing OPEC, it would deal a killer one-two punch to the economics of the market that keep the prices up.  For starters, just as more dollars on the market lower their value, more oil on the market lowers cost.  This is particularly important given the increasing demand for it...just as the old woman who pissed in the sea, even a little bit helps.  Also, oil from us is automatically cheaper on the world market precisely because of the weak dollar, so we'd have another advantage going in.  It would also drastically lower speculation of oil futures, as having a more stable supply from a country not ruled by barbarians from the 7th century will reduce market risk.  The futures market is a huge factor in current crude costs.

But even if all U.S. companies procured their own oil (most have supply deals with individual exporters, but that doesn't change the market price), enabling them to drill for more oil domestically makes a hell of a lot more sense, as then we could regulate exports to keep the oil in a closed market and thereby price it to whatever the fuck we wanted. But the fact that it's not a closed market is what makes regulation a poor option that does nothing to help the situation as it exists.

I just wish San Antonio was as walk-friendly and had better public transport as your cities.  Just because we have so much land doesn't mean everything has to be so fucking spread out.  =\

I'm convinced that where I live is the safest in the nation.

We're far enough away from the coast to avoid hurricanes.  We're far enough away from large bodies of water to avoid flooding  There's something about our geography that helps manage tornadoes and assorted wind problems (as opposed to plains, which are tornadic killing fields).  We're far enough from fault lines to avoid earthquakes.  I don't know of any volcanoes nearby.  We're far enough away from substantive municipalities that we don't have major crime risks and have the right to do something about it ourselves if the day ever comes.

The only problem we have is the occasional thunderstorm and the eventual asteroid.  Keep your civilization!

And as I say this, I'll become the victim of a murder-death-killer on a day with high wind and lightning strikes during Third Impact.

Yeah....I don't think so. I'd rather not get flooded out or dead from a hurrican thank you very much.

My list of places that I'd consider moving too is rather small. Most of the coast is out, especially in the south. I also I'm tired of the cold and snow so that leaves out most northern states as well. I don't really have an desire to live in Cali either...so I'm kinda limited.

But I do know that I won't be living in the sticks anymore if I do move.

Aside from the afore-mentioned safety reasons, it's far cheaper to live here, and if you don't like dealing with neighbors you can live as far away from them as you want.

All I know is I gotta get out of here before New Madrid decides it's time to let lose again. The aftershocks alone of the 1812 quake where stronger then the quake that hit San Francisco in 1906.

And the only Southern Coastal City I've considered was Savannah, but you couldn't pay me enough to live in Florida. It's just the idea of it.

Georgia is a wierd state, but South Florida is horrid. South-West Florida is nice, it's really only Miami and Orlando which are the asshole portions, with Miami being Cuban and Orlando being superbiblebastards.

But yeah, deep south life = anal rape and cross burnings. No thanx plz
