It is because an avatar is used to represent oneself. If I recognize everybody by their choice of avatar (like yours, or Nuri's animated one), I recognize Bernie by the lack of her avatar.

It's a sad story - back in the Hibernia days, someone sent me the most perfect avatar ever - a realistic drawing of a sheep in fishnet stockings and a garter belt. The VERY SATURDAY I sat down to update a myriad of things, my beloved G3 sputtered her last, and I never found that picture again. Pissed me off, so I did exactly what Chelsey deduced and decided to be the only one without an avatar.

I'm over my naughty sheep now and am conducting avatar interviews.

Of course I don't remember each and everyone's arrival. Most people got here primarily through the Ass-spank or because of my Brian fanpage. But to answer your question, it's probably another case of mb branching.
