'Enter the Dragon'
Bruce Lee starrer 'Enter the Dragon' is set for a noir-style remake from 'The Shield' exec producer Kurt Sutter.
Warner Independent Pictures has set "The Shield" exec producer Kurt Sutter to write and make his feature directing debut on "Awaken the Dragon."

Noir-style remake of "Enter the Dragon," the 1973 martial arts classic that made Bruce Lee a global star, will be produced by John Wells, Fred Weintraub and Paul Heller.

John Wells Prods. is based on the Warner lot, and Weintraub and Heller were producers of the original WB-distributed film.

Sutter said he's writing "Awaken the Dragon" as a contemporized drama about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk into the bloody world of underground martial arts fight clubs.

Original film starred Lee as a martial artist who's drafted by law enforcement to participate in a martial arts tournament and infiltrate a drug smuggling operation run from the host's heavily guarded island.

"I'm a huge noir fan, and this plot lends itself to the film I want to make," Sutter said. "I wanted to set it in these underground fight clubs where the action is really raw and expose the brutality of Shaolin kung fu. This will be more 'Raging Bull' than 'Crouching Tiger' in its viciousness."

Sutter will look to discover a fight star in the role of the monk and cast an established American actor to play the FBI agent.

Sutter, who'll be a consulting producer for the final season of "The Shield," is writing the FX pilot "Forever Sam Crow," a drama set in the world of outlaw motorcycle clubs. He's completing the script to "Inland Saints," a Paramount Pictures drama to be directed Joel Schumacher and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Just make a entirely new film!  Damn.

New Regency is looking to assemble its own giant robot movie.

The 20th Century Fox-based production entity is close to a deal with the Mark Gordon Co. to adapt "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" into a live-action film.

Gordon has been developing the pic, based on the popular 1980s Japanese animated TV series, comicbooks and toy line, with Justin Marks penning the script.

Should the deal close, project would be one of the company's more high-profile efforts since Robert Harper took over as chairman-CEO of Regency Filmed Entertainment earlier this year.

Interest in the property hit a high after "Transformers" turned into a box office juggernaut, raking in nearly $300 million to date.

New Regency, which hasn't had a major hit since "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in 2005, sparked to the idea of a potential franchise.

Company's upcoming pics include "Alvin and the Chipmunks," the Doug Liman-directed "Jumper," the Alexandre Aja-helmed "Mirrors" and the Eddie Murphy starrer "Starship Dave."

Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico. Five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders.

Gordon will produce with Lawrence Inglee and Jordan Wynn, who are shepherding the project at the Gordon Co., which has Roland Emmerich's "10,000 B.C." bowing next from Warner Bros. Mark Costa and Ford Oelman are exec producers.

"Voltron" pic has been in the works for nearly three years, with Jim Young's Animus Films funding its development.

Marks has become a go-to guy in Hollywood for comicbook, videogame and toy-based adaptations.

He is adapting "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" for Joel Silver at Warner Bros., as well as the Green Arrow pic "Supermax," also at the studio. Marks also has "Street Fighter" in the works at Hyde Park and Fox.

As far as voltron is concerned, well I guess they put it on earth so that the gumps can relate a little more.  Though what the fuck a bunch of lion mecha would be doing here is gonna be a hell of a lot harder to explain now.

I don't mind that.  I wouldn't even mind if they lifted the basics of the plot.  Hell, it's been done before.  Throw in some supernatural elements and bam, you have "Mortal Kombat".  Ppl do that all the time.  Calling it a remake of (or even feeling the need to remake) Enter the Dragon is what I find offensive.  Bruce Lee's last completed film?  Named for Bruce Lee?  Just lift the damn plot and call it "Awaken the Dragon" and let it stand on its own instead of using a dead guy's name and film.  We all know it won't end up being similar enough to call it a remake.


The Voltron thing was easy to do.  Five hip, happening dudes in the future, traveling in space.  They get caught up in some war (likely some dog-fight of some kind) and are blasted onto Arus near the magnificent Castle of Lions.  Coran, Allura, and co. save them and plead for their help.  Someone among the group re-discovers the legend of Voltron and they unearth and pilot the Lions to defeat the incoming forces of Zarkon, Lotor, and Hagar.  Sven gets captured and the princess fills in for him in the final showdown to the horror and protests of Coran and Nanny.  Intersperse with adorable, irresistible space mice.  This shit practically writes itself.  Mexico?  EARTH?!  Make a new robot movie if that's what you want to do.  FUCK.

Should've Googled "Speed Racer Matrix".  This gives me some hope.  From USA Today:

Unlike those darker movies, Racer "is going to be very bright, very family-friendly," Silver says. "And it will have great effects like The Matrix, just with the car."

V was a great movie even if not wholly faithful, but why does everything need to have a damn message attached?  Well if it turns out to be at least as good as V, that won't be too bad.

I hope this means equal opportunity casting for the right folks to play the parts by choosing from a broad spectrum of skin colors and ethnic backgrounds and not "hey, let's stick in a black guy or a saucy latina that clearly doesn't belong and make the character conform to them" the way this usually turns out.  But of course it'll likely be the latter and we'll get a Wayans, a rapper, or Michelle Rodriguez somehow.

I was depressed the rest of the day filled with thoughts of poor Joe at the bottom of the ocean.

Transformers, too. Both have gone through various revivals, but I think it is obvious Transformers has weathered better, and has had some great spots along the way. (Beast Wars, Robots in Disguise, even the "Unicron trilogy" is not that horrible, and especially the more recent Animated).

GI Joe? Please tell me you did not like Extreme. Sigma Six had some cool ideas, I suppose (the mini-figures). The movie? I was entertained, though not truly pleased.

I wonder if there will be a new Joe series on "The Hub."
