So I saw Rise of the Silver Surfer yesterday.. and I'm impressed. Many movies I get bored after the first hour and a half and start wondering when they'll get past the filler and into the real shit. This movie, I wasn't bored once. I didn't wonder what time it was once. That's a good sign.

I think it could have used more of us getting to know the Silver Surfer's personality, we only get to hear a few lines of dialoge from him. But from the ending alone, I know there's going to be a sequel with him in it.

Oh yea, and Stan Lee has a cameo in the movie... as himself.

I did like the final battle in the movie, where

If there was one major flaw in this movie besides the fact of not getting to know Silvey better, it's that it had a lot of predictable moments, like "Oh we KNEW that was going to happen". Oh well.

Funny how people are anal about how closely movies hew to the original material if they're based on books or plays or whatever, but for comics it's just, people won't believe this or that. This ignores that people will believe anything and would rather see the impossible brought to life than something made so "realistic" and "plausible" that it becomes mundane.

I'm actually the opposite because comic books already give you a clear visual on what shit should look like, so I get annoyed when movies of comics don't jive to the images I've seen. Books leave more up to the reader's imagination and interpretation as far the visual aspect goes, so I'm a bit more lenient on it. I don't know what's so weird about having superheroes and villains look like they did in the comics, especially when you're talking about titles that were popular enough to warrant a movie adaptation in the first place.

One of the perks of comic adaptation you hear about a lot is that they're virtually pre-existing storyboards. I guess those that use them (like 300) do pretty well.

Anyway, which tend to be more successful...those that are more faithful, or those that aren't? Which reminds me, I still need to see V for Vendetta, although I hated the comic.

I tend to think the more faithful a movie is to it's source material. (Not just comics, but Video Games, Toylines, Books..whatever.) the better it is.

Examples:
Sin City vs. LXG
Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter
Interview with the Vampire vs. Queen of the Damned.

I think a lot of the times a movie that makes huge leaps from it's source material is more about a Writer/Director/ or Producers need to change it make it their own. To put their stamp on it, and I feel they should leave that kind of arrogance at home and just try to create a better film as a whole. If they want something that's their own, then they should write their own orginal script based on their orginal ideas.

Ok ok ok. Let me make something clear. I enjoyed Rise of the Silver Surfer a lot, probably because I was blissfully ignorant of the fact that Galactus was supposed to be a 1000 foot tall giant wearing a gay-pride-purple forked helmet, instead of a giant planet-eating Unicron thing.

Sometimes it's best to be blisfully ignorant of the truth. It's worked for Bush for 8 years.

Do you think that the existence of that movie makes it less likely that a more true to form adaptation will ever be made? That's pretty much my only grudge against the current transformers movie.

The minute they killed Johnny Cage, I knew what we were in for.

Coming back to this thread, I read "the Silver Snuffer" instead of "Surfer". May have made for a better movie.

I do. If Fox still has the rights, and the rights to the sequels that'll stop any other movie from being made until those rights expire. And it's not likely Fox will Greenlight another one due to the poor box office. Till the rights expire, I doubt we'll see another one. And we don't know how long the deal was for, but just to give you a worst case example. In 1994 Warner Bros made Interview with the Vampire. They had a deal for the rights to this movie and the next two novels "The Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of the Damned." In 2002 They rushed Queen of the Damned out in theaters to get some more money out of the deal before it expired. Which means WB made at least an 8 year deal for the rights to those novels. More then likely it was a 10 year deal. (1993-2003). If Moore made a deal like Rice did it could be almost a decade before we see another movie based on LXG.

Personally I don't like Rice's idea that everyone immortal also has to be a fag. That just doesn't sit well with me. Sure if I was a vampire and I met some guy that I thought was cool I'd turn him into a vampire so we could party and be vampires together sucking chicks' blood and what not. There would be some funny moments where I'd be like "how did my wrist taste fag!?" and he'd be all "I don't know! How did my wrist taste homo!?" (cause no way we're biting each other on the neck).

Actually there needs to be a vampire movie where the aforementioned scene goes down. The awkwardness of it all would be hilarious.

It turned a profit. In fact it was one of the biggest movies that year. The reason they didn't make the other 2 was because of their stars. Cruise didn't want to be type cast as Lestat. (Oddly he reprised the role of Ethan Hunt twice just a few years later.) and so wasn't keen on doing the sequels. They had only signed him for Interview, instead of all three. Now days he'd have a contract for all three. Studios do that to prevent just what happened here from taking place. Pitt was also moving out of thier price range (Not that it mattered Louie only shows up briefly in "The Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of the Damned.") And paying him what he'd want for a Cameo was out of the question. WB is notiriously cheap. The fact that so far they havn't found a way to fuck up the Harry Potter movies is akin to a miracle.

Anyway they just sort of gave up on it. They had intentions of making the other two. In fact if you go rent a copy of Intreview you'll notice it has the subtitle "The Vampire Chronicles." but it never happened.

When they got around to making Queen of the Damned (Which is actually a smashed together version of the two sequel novels) Anne Rice, who wrote the orginal script, wanted nothing to do with it. And Neil Jordan didn't return to direct. They turned it into a cookie cutter movie and pushed it out as quick as possible. There are parts that are pretty faithful to the books, but as a whole it really moved away from what made Intreview so great. It's sad cause I like Stuart Townsend, but he's in two of the these movies we have been talking about sucking (QOD, and LXG.)

I'm not too keen on on that either, and it's odd how it only effects Male Vampires. It's not as bad in the first three novels, but I tried to read "Blackwood Farm" which is suppose to be a novel about Vampire and it went 20 chapters without once mentioning a Vampire. It was all about a weepy little Emo kid that wanted to fuck everyone that moved (including his priest) and really loved his grandma's Cameo collection. Ugh. I mean imagine reading 20 chapters of Jurasic Park and it not mentioning one Dinosuar. I gave up on the book. I also read Tale of the Body Theif, but it was was pretty terrible as well, but at least I got all the way through that one.

I liked Stuart Townsend better as a vampire than Tom Cruise. I mean his movie sucked and all and I didn't read the book, but I just thought Stuart Townsend made the better Lestat. Maybe because he exudes that bi-ish, Anne Rice vampire vibe. Maybe if they had done the sequel right after Interview, since Cruise was hotter and significantly less crazy then...

Also, MiG Ayesa, a contestant on Rock Star: INXS, has a bit part in QotD. He's one of the vampires at the concert that flies up on the stage to attack Lestat. Where's E? He'd appreciate this little footnote.
