Well I got back from seeing Spider-Man 3 a few hours ago. I went to a late showing at a theater that most people don't know exists to avoid crowds and I did ok. Theater was even full. I was happy about that cause all the other showings at were sold out at the other theaters. The fewer loud annoying people with cell phones I had to endure there better.
I'm just going to start off and say that this wasn't a bad movie. It was ok. The problem is that when it's compared with Spider-Man 1&2 it falls pretty short. And after watching it I have to say that wasn't the script, or the director or the acting that made it a bit disappointing. It was the simple fact of having too much information in one film.
First off we have three villains, which strays from the one per film of the past. We have "New" Goblin, in the form of Harry. Now his outfit leaves much to be desired. It looks like Green Goblin went to the X-Games and won first prize. Don't know what was wrong with the Goblin outfit from the first movie, but whatever. Then we have Sandman, which was done pretty well. He got the most development over the course of the film and makes me think that at one point in this scripts history he was suppose to be the only villain. Then we have Venom. Who was also done well, but severely rushed given he only shows up in the last third of the film. He goes from origin to full out super-villain plan in a matter of a few scenes. He has no film time to develop into a villain like all the rest of the Spidey baddies have in past films.
This movie was just too full of stuff, and it came across as haphazardly thrown together because of how much had to be covered. We went from Pete's life is great, to Harry wants to kill him, to OH Harry forgets that Pete is Spider-Man, to MJ gets jealous of Gwen Stacy, to Marko gets turned into Sandman, to Eddie Brock is trying to steal his job, to a strange meteorite falls out the sky and black goo tags along on Pete’s Moped. And that's all just in the first act. It's just as clutter in the other two acts as well. This film as the exact opposite problem that "Dead Man's Chest" did. Where as that film felt like there wasn't enough in it to justify a movie, this one feels like it should have been stretched over two flicks. I figure that might have something to do with McGuire not wanting to do another of these though.
