I have a whole stack of abortions on my desk, it's annoying.  If it manages to write anything it all, it's the rings of Saturn.

Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs.

And I get this: 8FFD020E.  Bah.  The last things I burned were two CDs my mom took custody of that my dad wanted copies of, something by Keiko Matsui and this other one called Secret Garden.  Fuckers.  Yes, I blame those fuckers: Keiko Matsui and Secret Garden.  I just burned a perfectly good CD last week.  I guess I'll try a system restore next and see if that does shit.   <_<

Usually that's caused by bad CDs. I bought a shitload of Fujifilm DVD+Rs, and barely any of them worked. I was throughohly pissed.

I wish it was just bad CDs.  I have Fujifilm and Maxell CD-Rs which both died on me.  The Fuji one recognized track numbers in my CD player, but that's as far as it went.  I also have some Imitation CD-RWs which aren't even being recognized.  Both the Maxell and Imitation ones are from spools of which I've already depleted.  So while there could be a chance there are bad apples at the bottom of the decks, it doesn't seem likely.

*Can no longer burn audio CDs. Was able to burn audio CDs just a week before.
Tried burning a data CD and couldn't even get disc to be recognized. Looked at the last batch of CDs I made and they are slightly striped on the backs as well. Perhaps this issue has been in the making.

*Last actions include installing Excel Reader and burning three CDs, one by Keiko Matsui, Vegas by Crystal Method, and one called Secret Garden.

*Successful burns would produce a large section on the back of the CD where you could tell it burnt.
Attempted burns now result in the following:
-CDs with many few or multiple rings where the large burn section should be
-Blank CDs
-Clicking noises in the drive
-Error Message: "Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs."

*No problems playing audio files.

*System Restore unsuccessful.

*Slowing burn speed unsuccessful.

*Lowering recording speed to 16x unsuccessful.

*Used a Laser Lens Cleaner with no result.

*Tried Updating Driver, message said no update available.

Burn Speed: Fast (Did set it to medium with no avail.)
In Recording Tab: Box is checked to enable recording.

Congratulations, you just copped to attempted pirating of copyrighted materials.

I had this problem on my old Smart and Friendly drive (neither smart nor friendly), and I fixed it by buying a new drive.  Like Tom said, get a new DVD burner if you have around sixty bucks lying around.  But before that, you may also want to try a real CD burning program.  Nero is what I use, and they have a free trial version of the software available for download.

So that's what it was making rings for?  I don't get it.  I'd say it'd have something to do with making the old man copies of his own CDs for himself (which is the stupidest thing ever to get a drive messed up for), except I looked at my CDs and they progressively have rings appearing on them over the span of a month or two.

Looks like Keiko Matsui's has this whole warning about unauthorized duplication.  The CD doesn't have a case, but there's print on the disc face.  Bah, and I don't even like her music.  At least it wasn't someone I was a fan of, I might've been disappointed.  I shall have to look into this further.

Try running this and try copying again.  See if that helps anything.  I keep a cracked version of this program/driver to copy DVDs, but it supposedly kills CD copy protection, too.

It seems I can no longer view any of the DVDs or CDs I've made.  I can only view commercial materials.  I'll definetely put that down on my list of things to try, but I'm going to try a couple of other suggestions first via the HP website.  Thank you, though.

Per a suggestion I found at a couple of forums, I took out the drive and cleaned it with compressed air as well as manually cleaned the lens.  It still works the same.  So much for the possibly it was that hardware issue.  Anyway, I'm a little happy that I was able to do that and manage not to break anything.

I'll think about my options and should it come down to it, I may go buy another drive so I can teh burns again.  I'm really not keen on  getting any more software, like Nero or anything.  And as much as I'd still like to blame Keiko Matsui, I have been burning a lot of stuff to my hard drive over the weeks (I've probably bought more CDs this month than I bought last year), so it could've been a number of people.  It still stands that Secret Garden, Matsui, and Crystal Method were the last ones I burned before I couldn't read CD-Rs and DVD-Rs anymore.  

At the same time, I'd been getting rings for a while now.  And my drive is a wee old.  There was something in the HP solutions about reverting my computer to how it was when I bought it, but it's been so many years now I don't think I really want to do that.  And at least I know now the problem isn't burning, but recognizing/reading.

I finally got around to replacing the drive.  Taking my old one out earlier was ample prep for this and it went super fast.  I haven't tested the burning yet, but it plays my DVDs.  After I mail in and receive the rebate, the drive comes out to under 50 bucks.  Not bad.
