Rock Star: Supernova
« on: Jul 05, 2006, 11:46:43 PM »
Rock Star is back, along with Brooke Burke and Dave Navarro.  Gone are INXS.  This time Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Gilby Clarke (Guns and Roses) and Jason Newstead (Metallica) are looking for a sucker to front their new band, the unimaginatively named Supernova.  Joining them on the judges panel is some femmey producer prick, but he doesn't talk enough to matter.  As you know I'm a Rock Star fan, so here's my rantings, probably only to read in their entirety by E and people who can't get to sleep and are bored.

Storm Large - Started us off.  No Jordis Unga, who began the show with Baba O'Reilly, but she did another Who song.  I think she'll be around a while.

Ryan Star - It's the girl from American Idol.... ha ha, or not.  He does "Iris", which he sings well, but it just creeped me out that we never saw him look done at the adoring women.  Dude, don't be gay.

Toby Rand - All right, a hot Aussie.  I hope he sticks around.

Patrice - She sang "Somebody to Love", which was done better last season by Heather Luttrell.  I hope they don't recycle too many songs from last season.  Is it too much to ask for some Deep Purple or some AC/DC.  Hell, do "White Rabbit" if you're jonesing for Grace Slick so bad.

These first four were more or less solid, so I don't expect them to go any time soon.   These next few people actually began to put me to sleep, and I actually fast forwarded through their performances.

Magni - "I will show you how the Iceland we are rock."  Heh, no I kid.  His cover of "Satisfaction" didn't give me any satisfaction.  I wanted more energy, more crowd interaction and it just wasn't there.  He was just there and singing.  Just the same, I hope he doesn't leave first.  He should get another chance.  I can't help but think his remark about being so recognizable in Iceland didn't help him get any votes.

Zayra - She's pretty and Latina and lives in Texas.  She really didn't bring anything with her song choice, Evanensence-- bleh!, and unlike Marty Casey and "Hit Me Baby One More Time" she didn't improve this song like someone better would've.  It still felt very pop and not very rock.  Maybe it'll improve next week, but I honestly don't see her lasting very long.

Jenny - She did a Nickleback song.  They all sound the same anyway, so it doesn't matter what song it was.  I felt like I was watching an American Idol audition.  Worse yet, her face reminds me of horse-faced Phucking Heiress-Whore.  Seriously, am I suppose to picture this performing with Tommy Lee and Gilby Clarke?  I also don't see her sticking around.

Josh - Did some Black Crowes song.  I wasn't digging it, but maybe it was the song itself.  I didn't find him particularly memorable.

Matt - "Yellow".  I don't know what to think about this guy.  My impression is that he's this season's MiG in that people will see and hear him and think "how adorable", carrying him with votes to end whether he's the worthiest to be there or not.  I liked this performance, and I see him lasting a while given that he follows Dave's advice and goes for something edgier.

Dilana - "Lithium".  When I first saw her I thought she looked kinda cool.  Nice, hard look to her and I liked her accent (born in Africa, probably South Africa).  I think she makes the third person on the show who now makes their home in Texas.  She got on stage with her creepy hood and her man voice and I was just WTF?  At this point, I was groggy and this actually made me sit up and pay attention.  Her stare was creepy and then she wouldn't freakin' move.  But I loved it!  She was awesome, her pressence was amazing, her voice was powerful, and she just went manic at the end of the song.  It said on her bio that her influence was Tina Turner and it shows.  I completely expect her to last to the very end.  She could take the win.  Thank you Dilana for waking me up.

Dana - This season's Jordis, she's the cute youngster with huge voice.  A good pick to come after Dilana, as I think anyone else would've come off really looking like they suck compared to Dilana.  She didn't.  Sang "I'm the Only One", which Deanna did last season.  Really, really good.  Her and Dilana will probably be the last females standing.  I just wonder with her admission of being sheltered if 1) she'll last the contest or 2) if she wins, she'll last the tour.  I don't think she'll win though.  I also worry nerves and such will get the best of her and like Jordis, she'll start fading out in the ending weeks.

Phil - Performed "Cult of Personality", which was the same song Ty Taylor opened with last season.  He didn't do a bad job, he just wasn't very memorable here.  He didn't bring anything to the show.  They ragged on him about his song choice.  I think he deserves another chance.

Jill - The short one.  I don't care for her for whatever reason, but she has a lot of talent.  She should make it far if not to the end.

Chris - Performed "Roxanne", which Suzie McNeil did Week 3.  After seeing his performance, I dubbed him this season's Daphna Dove.  Lots of personality, style, and good on the eyes, but they sing in like one key.  It was like karaoke.  I felt bad for him because they showed the reactions from the judges, and they almost looked like they were laughing.  Though I'd like him to have a chance to improve, he already looks like the first casualty of show.  It's bad enough they laughed, but when one of the judges tells you you "sucked", it's never a good sign.

Lukas - I love "Rebel Yell" but I wasn't digging this.  Apparently people loved him, so I doubt he'll be going anywhere anytime soon.  Maybe by then he'll grow on me.

End show preliminary results:  Bottom Three: Chris, Phil, Magni.  At this point, I went "who's Phil".  Not surprising.  I expected Jenny to be there, but these guys were probably worse, so it'll probably remain this way.  Unless Chris pulls a rabbit out of his ass, I see him going home.  If this elimination is like the others, maybe we'll get an encore from Dilana or Lukas (since the judges practically came on the guy, they liked him so much).

The next show is an hour long, and that worries me if it's just an elimination show.  Maybe since all the Rock Star mansion eps are online, it'll give us more insight into their new homelife.

Oh and Rock Star website.  It looks pretty but it loads like a freakin' tortoise.  My God.  And the CBS official website is about as useful as a straw on a hamburger.

I've been going to this fansite to read stuff.  It sounds like they ripped off a bunch of the official site, but it loads faster so too bad.

Meeeh. This group has not impressed me thus far. I missed the first half hour. Dilana's voice is good, but it might be too....Unique for "Supernova". God such a horrible name.

Thank God for you, E.  I have to say even though I watched it, I wasn't as moved as I was by the first group either.  The RS:INXS bunch was a fun, immediately likable bunch.  I also tend to think this group suffered a bit by not letting us get to see them and their reactions when they arrived at the mansion.  I recorded it and watched it since I technically slept through the first half hour (not on purpose, ha ha), and let me tell you that forward button was getting a lot of pressin'.  I think you may have gotten a better impression if you had seen the first half hour.  Aside from Dilana and Dana, the latter part of the show is when the talent started becoming questionable and the people forgetable.

BTW, I have you heard Jordis' new version of "Try Not"?  http://www.jordismusic.com/

I have not heard Jordis' latest stuff. I'm waiting mostly for a CD due to the Dial Up = Slow Download setup I have. ...Though the bits I'm hearing off the site sound very nice. Makes me wonder even more how JDICK FORTUNE won.

I dunno. These guy's sound really....less impressive thus far. Few Potentials, but as a whole roughly mediocre.  MAYBE as the show goes on, their voices will develop into better stuff, kind of like how Marty was kind of a frenetic screamer at the start of Rockstar: INXS, but really turned into an awesome performer and singer. My bro bought his Album, thus I have a copy, and I gotta say? Very nice. Couple songs I'm not terribly fond of,  but overall very nice for a first CD.
Likes on the CD:

Casualty -  This SHOULD be made into an Action Movie Theme. Definitely. The lyrics are totally made for it. "Persistance, Resistance, One man can make the difference!" I put this as a fight song on my 360 when playing Fight Night Round 3.

Hold On - Not bad. If, as I am with Casualty, I were to assign this to a Movie, I'd say a Romantic Comedy. A decent one, with some slapstick. Not like While You Were Sleeping romantic comedy, but something with a bit more action.

Trees -  Honestly I prefered it Live, and Acoustic. Recorded as thus, it's all right, but I do like the Live version because of the sheer...I dunno...energy you can get by watching him perform it. Maybe I'm just spoiled cause I saw'em perform it "live" on TV. If I hadn't seen it live, I'd probably like this more, but it's not really a fave on the CD. Friggin' Awesome Guitar Solo though.

Rain on the Brain -  MEEH. Not one I like personally. S'all right, but I'm not putting it on any 360 playlist, is all I'm saying.

Tunnel -  Pop Rock Creepy. Like he's stalking someone, so Again, not a favorite on here.

Eyes Can't See - Another Action Movie theme contender. Good Fight song, but not something I'd listen to otherwise.

The Riddle - I like this one. Very multi-applicable. I identify with it, especially as of recently with my failed attempt to date a gal. Dunno why it strikes a chord with that particular situation, but it does.   "There's got to be something more to the Riddle......Trying not to understand...."

Clinic - Yet ANOTHER action one! Far too many on this CD for conventional tastes. This one reminds me of him early on in Rockstar, before he started to...what's the word....pace himself?

Call of Distress - Teen Dramedy theme. Not one I like at all.

Straight as an Arrow - This would be a Car chase theme. Another one I'm not fond of.

Clouds - This one I like too. Along the Veins of The Riddle. Slower paced, much more likable to me.

Impromptu Marty Casey CD review I know, but I review it because:
Not a one of the most recent Rockstar Contestants sound as good as he does on this CD In my opinion. Not yet anyway.

As I watch tonights episode:
LUKAS. ANSWER. THE FUCKING. QUEESSTIIOONNN FUCKER.
He's starting to look like the JD of this season.

Update: Dilana on the Encore....A Little TOO manic for my tastes, but she's got a very subtle, yet very STRONG stage presence. What with the glare...

Trees - Honestly I prefered it Live
I have the same problem with Pretty Vegas.  The very first time JD performed that on TV... nothing can touch that.  What ended up on the CD is crap.

I'm still waiting for Tara and Suzie to put their CDs.  I'd love to say I'd buy them, but just the same I'd like to hear more in the way of samples, especially from Suzie.  If every song on her CD is like "Soul Life", I may pass.  What I've heard from Tara sounds good, as it does with Jordis.  Anyone else, I don't know.  I don't really follow anyone else.  I was mildly interested in Marty's CD but I read a really scathing review about it so I decided to hold off on that.

Ha!  Yeah.  I know what you mean.  As far as his "talent" goes, I'm not seeing it myself.  Very balsy of him to tell them all most of them sucked.  In the end, I think this only endeared him to Supernova.

I agree.  I can see how that could be overdone and hurt her in future performances.

I can't believe Matt and his purty eyes went home.  I was surprised his rendition of "Yellow" made the bottom three with Jenny around.  And I really thought he was safe until he unleased his song choice on Supernova:  Duran Duran's "Planet Earth".  Just the look on Tommy Lee and them's faces said it all.  OMG.  I love that song but you don't sing Duran Duran to friggin' Tommy Lee.  He needed to go classic, like Chris did with the Doors.

I don't think Phil has a whole lot of time left unless the others really mess up.  I don't know what the group sees in him.  He's mumbling most of the time!  Even when he's not singing.

What surprised me the most:  Their songs were ones that were already picked for them to choose from.  Why are they giving them Evanesance and Nickelback songs?  I think more than their actual performances, the fact they had slower, decisively pop songs hurt some of the contestants.  Don't go around emphasizing song choice when you give them crap songs.

Stay. Away. From my. Barn. You Bastard.

Dilana...needs to control the manicness more. The First performance it was a little wild, but followed the music pretty well. The Encore was way too spastic. Once she starts toning it down? I think she'll be a big contender.
As is, I'm surprised Nova didn't send all three of the bastards home after their song performances last night. Is it me, Or was the House band just DROWNING out their voices?

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

The house band really seemed to ham up the whole "ba ba ba-ba, ba ba ba ba-ba" thing in "Planet Earth".  I really didn't listen to Chris or Phil's performances that much though.  With Chris, I was just eager to see who else made bottom three, but with Phil I just didn't feel like hearing it.

Honestly, I didn't give two shits about those three. Der Women seem to be the most talented.....
AND ON THAT NOTE.....I'm glad there's some nice eye candy this season, don't get me wrong, but am I worng, or does it seem like out of the 14 people, mostly it's women? Whereas last year there was more guys than gals? I'm just saying....

Actually, RS:INXS had more women.  Jordis, Daphna, Dana, Tara, Jessica, Heather, Deanna, and Suzie.  8 out of 15.

Supernova has Dilana, Dana, Storm, Jill, Jenny, Patrice, and Zayra.  7 out of 15.

I'm thinking it feels like more women because the guys this season are mostly forgetable.  Off the top of your head, do you even remember what Ryan Star sounds like?  Or Josh Logan?  I don't even remember who Josh Logan is.

Read some spoilers on the rockband.com forums.  Toby, Dilana, and Lukas apparently rock it on the Tuesday show (which is taped Sundays).  Everybody else got mixed reactions.  The song list:

Magni – My Generation (The Who)
Jenny Galt – Tainted Love (Soft Cell)
Jill Giola – Violet (Hole)
Zayra Alvarez – You Really Got Me (The Kinks)
Chris Pierson – Take Me Out (Franz Ferdinand)
Dilana – Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
Josh Logan – With Arms Wide Open (Creed)
Phil Ritchie – If You Could Only See (Tonic)
Storm Large – Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Patrice Pike – Heart-Shaped Box (Nirvana)
Lukas Rossi – Don’t Panic (Coldplay)
Ryan Star – Jumpin’ Jack Flash (The Rolling Stones)
Dana Andrews – Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf)
Toby Rand – Somebody Told Me (The Killers)

...Dilana....With...a Johnny Cash song? This has potential....
"I'm going down down down...into a ring of fire...."

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

If by potential you mean Johnny comes back from the dead and beats her to pulp for ruining his song, then yes it does.
