The federal government is proposing money as an incentive to turn in those who send millions of unwanted e-mails.

The Federal Trade Commission says if people got at least $100,000 for their trouble, they might be willing to blow the whistle on co-workers, friends and others flooding computer in-boxes with unsolicited offers for prescription drugs, weight-loss plans and other products.

The proposed bounty -- between $100,000 and $250,000 -- is higher than rewards in most high-profile criminal and terrorism cases. For example the reward for turning in someone on the FBI's top 10 fugitive list is $50,000.

On its Web site, the FTC said there are three hurdles to prosecutions under the "Can Spam" Act that bounties could help with:
Identifying and finding spammers
Proving spammers are legally responsible
Getting a fine from the spammer

The agency says in a report that it doesn't expect tips would come from amateur sleuths tracking down spammers online.

Oh man, I was ragging on to Merla about that. That's some f'ed up stuff where the candy is put into a candy and then (in some instances) peanut butter is thusly added. Just like Leno when he said it's gotten really bad for America when "cheesecake" is regulated to an ingredient (in the cheesecake blizzard at DQ).
