Saw Peter Jackson's 'King Kong' Last Night...
« on: Dec 14, 2005, 12:20:01 PM »
I went to the midnight screening of King Kong last night through my various hook-ups at the movie theater.  Yes midnight, as in I was home until very, very late.  But that's another story...  Interesting previews.  Finally get to see X3's trailer on the big screen as well as the DiVinci Code (Tom Hanks looks weird without eyebrows) and the Miami Vice trailer (Sonny Crockett looks weird with one eyebrow).

Anyway, the movie was decent.  It takes forever to them to get to Skull Island.  There is a lot of character development that could have been simplified and cut down to about 20 minutes without losing anything.  The Skull Island sequences are AMAZING however and well worth it.  There is an amazing scene with a brachiosaurus stampede that you really need to see, as well as the V-Rex fight.  That was cool too...

They do a good job creating chemistry between Kong and Anna (Naomi Watts) and you feel bad when he dies...but there really was no point to make this movie other than Peter Jackson wanted something easy to work on.  There was no need to make this film and I couldn't help but to walk out of the theater thinking that.

If they at least tried to explain things, other than hinting at them, trying to make this a serious epic, I could understand.  The movie's pacing is weird and there are plenty of plot-holes and questions you'll be left with at the end.  Like , how did they transport a giant ape from the south east on a damaged ship with nothing to sedate him for nearly a month but chloroform?  Let alone how did the feed him?  The movie doesn't know whether it wanted to be in depth and serious, or a lighthearted popcorn flick and that's my biggest problem.

My second biggest problem is Jack Black...  Good god was he out of place.  He tried so hard to be serious, but couldn't come off any other way but goofy...  And his line at the end just came out so wrong.  I also had a problem with the indignant crowd...  Hooting, hollering, laughing at things that aren't funny (they practically RUINED A History of Violence for me because of that shit) and clapping.  God I can't stand clapping!  It's not like fucking King Kong can hear you assholes!  It's not like he and Peter Jackson, or Adrian Brodie and his sandwich-nose are going to come out from a back room and bow!  CHRIST.

Anyway, if you have three hours to see this movie and you want to, go.  Don't expect it to live up to the critics hype or for it to be as epic as they claim.  It's enjoyable, but don't expect The Lord of the Rings.

Not even with Andy Serkis playing Kong?

A friend e-mailed me a while ago with pretty much the same opinion on the whole thing.  Didn't have clappers in his showing, but some dipshits did bring their kid, probably about 5, for a midnight showing. Nice.  <_<  Whatever the bug scene in the ravine is (he won't tell me), the kid started howling in terror during it and gibbered for the rest of the movie, so somebody's probably changing a wet bed about now.

I didn't like it when people were laughing at golem right out the gate (like when we first see him in daylight squirming in pain because of the elven rope about his neck) that shit wasn't supposed to be funny you fucking gumps.  However I like the clapping and cheering when something really great happens (as long as it doesn't involve me missing any dialogue). I don't clap  personally but it doesn't bother me.  And I can't remember what happened in  LOTR but there was one great action point in the trilogy  and I lef the cheering with AWW FUCK YEAH! (or something like that). LOTR always makes me emotional.

Black looked out of place in the preview too.  I'm still gonna see it (after Narnia of course).

It's funny you should mention him, he actually not only does Kong's motion capture work, but he also has a pretty big part as the S.S. Venture's cook.

From the previews alone, the movie didn't look horrible but just not anything I was in any hurry to see.  It was obvious that the only reason it got made was so Peter Jackson could work off his hard-on for the first movie.  Hey, you!  Where the fuck's the Hobbit!?

Crowds are pretty much why I don't go anymore these days, especially with the popularity of the cell phone.  Granted at the last movie I saw (Harry Potter and teh Goblet of teh Fire), there were very few problems with noise.  However I think I owe that to the fact that one showing was a 9 a.m. showing with a smaller crowd and the second time I saw it was in the Imax.  I figure most people that go feel they're spending enough on the tickets there that they can't afford to talk like they do in the regular theater.  Plus it was the last showing, and they were probably tired.  Not to mention that when you decide to venture to the packed maze of downtown to the only large screen in the city where you have to pay for parking, you probably really want to see the movie and aren't as likely to talk all loud and stupid-like anyway.

However, I brave the crowds for things I really want to see so I may do so for Narnia.

I have to admit that I love telling people to  be quiet that are making noise in the theatre.  I yelled at some kid in Fellowship because he kept announcing the characters names as they made an appearance on screen.  People had been shooshing him but he wasn't stopping.   then when gandalf fell he said "AHHhhhh".  He got your standard SHUT THE FUCK UP! and that silenced him.

I remember IN MIB2 this baby kept crying and the mom wouldn't take it outside.  This is going on for like 10 minutes.  So I yelled out "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!" and everyone kind of laughed but then some guy upstaged me by yelling out "I WILL EAT YOUR BABY!" and the whole crowd exploded into laughter.  Turns out this guy was a friend of mys little sister. I met him 2 years later in NYC he truly is a master in the field.

Kids, I can kinda live with only because I understand that they're kinda stupid and still learning things like controlling the loudness of their voice and when not to speak.  If I go to a kid's film especially, I kinda expect them to be there.

An adult has no excuse.  A grown man or woman that has the nerve to talk during the movie boils my blood more than any little kid can.

And a baby.  Really, it just shouldn't even be there at all.  Sorry, but there's a couple that's renting DVDs for a while.

And people who have the nerve to take little kids to stuff like Saw or the Blair Witch Project or something with a penis joke (like Scary Movie) or a sex scene.  They should just be immediately neutered.

I can't stand clapping at the movies nor do I understand why it's become socially acceptable in the last 5 years to do so.  It's not like Sean Bean and Peter Jackson are going to come out and take a bow off-stage...or for that matter, like they can even hear the people in the audience.

I'm sure the crowd applauded when they threw christians to the lions and it wasn't like the lion was going to stand up and take a bow either.

When the crowd sees a spectacle that delights them they show their appreciation in one form another.  I guess it doesn't matter that no enitity is there to take the credit.  They're applauding the event itself (it seems).  This is the kind of shit that someone in my department would do a study on.

I've twice had to tell kids to put away their laser pointers. One I went so far to tell him to "put that thing away or I'll shove it up your ass". They sit there flashing at the screen thinking no one will look back and notice what they're doing.  Idiots.

These people probably have pussy parents and need someone threatening them into behaving normally around the general populace. That stuff just won't do.

I'm pretty sure laser pointers are banned in theatres here.  I think I remember seeing them being used back in the early 90s but the memory is vague.

Sometimes, the crowd is a plus in theater viewing.  My brother still remembers with fondness having seen Raiders of the Lost Ark and St*r WarzzZZ on their opening weekends, with a large part of his enjoyment being derived from seeing it with others and everyone being blown away simultaneously.

Then again, I have a suspicion that movie-goers twenty-five years ago either weren't so full of asstards like they are these days or they were a bit more restrained.  Part of the problem being that people these days don't believe you'll grab 'em by the neck and beat the motherloving shit out of them.

Pretty much...  My best friend works at a movie theater and he deals with some of the most arrogant, indignant people on the face of the earth.  They have no sense or common courtesy.

They treat the people in box office like shit when they won't "cut them a deal" or give a student discount to a kid without a student ID, they give the ushers shit for not letting them in while they're trying to clean up a theater, or not let someone to the front of the line because "they's gots keedsssss" and they give the people in the concession stand the most shit, again for not giving them "deals" and for really, really petty shit.

Case-in-point, my best friend was working concession stand one afternoon and a rather large woman ordered a rather large popcorn.  Keep in mind he had just taken the popcorn out of the popper.  As he handed it to her, she took a large handful and crammed it down her feed-hole.  Her face turned to anger as she mumbled "is this hot to you!?"  He replied that it had just come out of the popper.  She screamed "well it ain't hot!" and started chucking it at him.  I don't understand how someone could have the patience to work around these sub-humans all day just for the perk of seeing free movies.  I really don't understand it...

It's why I have as a general rule refused to work retail...the closest I ever came to it was when I worked with a powet company and all the office personnel had to answer phones during an outage.  I dealt with one asshole on the phone and it almost cost me my job.

I'm reminded of this bitchtard a few weeks back who wanted change.  We don't do that at the bookstore.  I told her so and she was all "well they did it before".  I shoot back "well they weren't suppose to", said she could buy something, and I'd give her change.  I'm not even suppose to say that much, so I was doing the biatch a favor.  She gets a thirty-six cent item (tax included BTW) and says all prickish, "I hope you're happy now".  Pissed me off.  "No, I'm not happy.  I'm not even suppose to do this."  And I explained to her that she's just making a purchase to get change, and I'm not allowed to even do that much even though she's buying something because she's making us her personal change machine.  So the cow's whips out the ol' "I want to speak to your manager", probably thinking she's all badass, and I pointed her in the right direction and sent her off.  She never got her change.  We're not a fucking bank.

That throwing shit at people... god.  Never had that at the bookstore or LJs, but they did that to us at Dairy Queen once.  What kind of asshole family raises kids to throw shit at strangers and just sits there and watches?  Fuck.  After that, it was no more fucking places with ballpits.  It's just ammo, not to mention kids pee in those.

Every single job I've either been fired from or almost lost my job was because I told some stupid customer to go fuck themselves.

I loved the lady who got me fired at my last job. The bitch wanted me to ring her up even though my register was locked awaiting manager's code. She got all impatient and rude and I practically screamed at her. Then the store manager, who bends over backwards kissing the customer's asses, got rid of me.

The key to working retail, I figure, is to have a good imagination so while someone's insulting you, you just smile and mentally invision stuffing pop rocks and cola down their throats and watching them explode....

The key is remain calm and berate them back in a prim and proper tone with perfect diction and no profanity...think agitated Frasier.

Once you have that mastered you add in a touch of condescending superiority in the form of appearing to be amused because what they're doing/asking is just that retarded.

It's also one of the substantial reasons I decided never to join the armed forces.  That, and being sent to fight for other people too pussified to do anything themselves getting my ass blown up or my head cut off in the process didn't agree with me, either.

Fuck anybody telling me when I can speak, eat, sleep, shit, whatever.  I had enough of that from being a kid, for Pete's sake.  Why do that for years and, if I don't get killed, turn around and do it to others?  Bullshit.  In the future, war will be completely plug and play and remote control.

Bingo.  Once they see you're amused by their behavior, most of the time they'll give up.  It's especially funny when it happens to morbidly obese assholes, because they turn cherry-red when they realize that you've embarassed them and they've made no point.

I'm learning, I'm learning.  It's a process!  I did a very curt "no" just today.  Didn't even let her finish speaking just "No.  Thank you.  Goodbye."
