I heard about this a few weeks ago, but Blockbuster just got rid of their late fees starting today.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

Blockbuster products still will have due dates, but customers will get a six-day grace period to return them. They also will get two phone calls and a postcard to remind them their rental is overdue, Ciaciuch said.

"After that, we sell it to you," she added.

When the grace period is over, customers will go from renters to buyers. On the seventh day, the company will automatically charge the person's credit card or membership account for the cost of the movie minus the rental fee, which is $2.99 for DVDs and $6.99 for games at Ciaciuch's store.

Is that article saying that it costs 6.99 to rent a video game?

Fuck Blockbuster.  No late fees?  So if I want to rent a movie, I not only have to wait for the due date to come but wait and see if the loser gets off his ass to turn it in for the week following?  Late fees are a good thing.  They keep shit in stock.  If I want it longer, I'm more than willing to pay to keep it.  It's a penalty that should be accepted.  Fucking Blockbuster was charging late fees up the wazoo when shit wasn't even late.  You could turn it in a day early and late fees would still find their way to your account.  Blockbuster should've just programmed their system to not append any late fees until half a day after the intended due date.  Or they should've simply stopped being corrupt sons of bitches.  This whole accepts competitor coupons and no late fee shit really turns me off.  Blockbuster can go sit and spin on it.

The answer to the issue of brick-and-mortar video rental.  As long as they stay fresh long enough to run DVD Shrink, I'm game.

Yeah, going online and ordering stuff is starting to have more and more appeal lately.  Maybe something to look into later in the year, when cable will most likely no longer be an option for me.

The guy that started Netflix claimed to have started it when he took a movie back to a Blockbuster and was stuck with a $45 extended viewing fee. The truth is... no can find a record of that transaction. But it make sfor a great fucking story. Our online rental servie costs less and has a better library anyway.

Yes,  <_< it's gonna be harder to keep shit in stock nowBut they have been testing it for overa full year now in certain areas in Tennesee and it doesn't affect stock as much as you might expect it to.  How else would you expect the company to attempt to compete, Nuri? Believe, it's brigning a LOT of business in. We can't really get shit done with all the customers pouring in, but it's probably going to be better for everyone in the long run. Um. I got a new yellow shirt out of it!  :)

Are you thinking stock on new stuff that you have plenty of or stock on movies where you just have one copy?  Frankly, stuff like Troy and its three dozen rental copies isn't the sort of stock I'm concerned with.  Not to mention the fact that I just don't like Blockbuster.

In that case, you're right then. Blockbuster just doesn't care about the library or the games. The whole store is designed specifically for the uncultered and unknowledgable movie-goer, referred to in some circles as "black people"

When confronted with the late fee or cost of a consecutive rental, the renter is not so put out.  It's just another three or four bucks.  Being late now means paying for the whole thing, which is, what, exactly?  [dohtml]I doubt it'd be the full MSRP of the movie, but much more than the late fee or rental.[/dohtml]  EDIT--I looked up the link, and it'll be $10-17 for DVDs...yeah, bring that puppy back, fool!  Point being that the incentive to return the movie is greater now.

Then again, I'm probably missing something here.  But I don't care if I am, because I don't rent often at all.  No renters around here carry decent anime, and that's almost all I watch these days.

The Flexplay thing I linked to would make video rental something that could be done from a vending machine...put in your buXors, hit the button with the desire movie, take it out of the hopper after it pops out, take it home, watch it over a two-day period until the disk clouds up and you can't use it anymore, and then throw it in the trash.  Ba-da-bing.  Done deal.  No return trip to the store, no putting anything in the mail.  Me likey.

What I don't get about Netflix is that it comes in your mail 1-2 days later.

That's cool if you have the night off or your planning a movie party.  But what if you're sitting at home and suddenly decide "I Want to rent a movie"?  That's what I'm always like.

So then you have to drive to the store and pick up a movie.

I'm thinking of signing up for Netflix, since they have a nice anime lineup that would really save me some dough.  The advantage is that you keep the rental for a month, don't have to go anywhere past your mailbox to do business, and a great selection.  Downside is, as you mentioned, instant gratification is not possible...but that's when having a Blockbuster or what-have-you is convenient.

EDIT: take that back...you don't ever have to turn them in if you remain subscribed.  You just don't get new movies until you do send them back.  Apparently it works on a queue.

I still think the Flexplay deal is the best way of doing rental business from the "drove out here for a movie" standpoint.  If I ran a store of any kind, I'd stock them.

Yeah, I like to be able to say, "you know what, I feel like renting a movie" and head right on out to the store.

And yeah, I value the library aspect.  When I go rent something, 9 times out of 10 I'm looking for something made several years ago.

That's hardly a fair statement when my stupid aunt goes out and rents "Soul Plane" for her 11 year old daughter.

Just before Christmas, my mom was asking me for the name of "that new Christmas movie" I had talked about wanting to see.  She wanted to buy the movie on DVD for my nephews, who're 12 and 9.

Turned out she was thinking about Bad Santa.  I'm still laughing over that one :P

I could see someone doing that. Like the stupid moo-cow who brought her kids to see South Park the movie, and then left WHEN THE TALKING CLITORIS SHOWS UP! She sat threw 2 hours of uncut southpark, but decided a giant talking clit was offensive.

Squirrel, stop being a dumbass. If you are up to a week late (a whole fucking week) you are charged nothing. NUUUUUTTHIIIINNGG.  You will almost never be charged more than $9 for keeping the movie. I don't know hwere the hell you got the figure you did. The charge is the previously viewed price minus what you already paid to rent it, which is 90% of the time going to be 12.99 -4.31, and you can still just bring it back for a fucking refund. This inconveniences  no one. We have to stock more copies now of course (394 of Troy) but we don't hav eto deal with complaining people nearly as much.

Because the movie has Orlando Bloom in it, you would move to get the movie so fast that it would break the sound barrier.
