End of Last Exile
« on: Dec 15, 2004, 06:58:51 PM »
After watching up to about episode 20-21 of Last Exile in japanese, I got to watch the rest of it since G4TTV is finishing it.

And all I have to say is.... what the bloody fuck happened?

Once again, an anime never fails to leave massive questions unanswered, loose ends still untied, and a rushed, confusing ending.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

10,000 steps down, round and round. One night on the town and I'm hellbound ... Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me. My little tower, seal my fate. Help me pay back, end their hate. Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me

Virgins? Where?

From what I heard from reviews, Last Exile had a confusing, crazy ending, and after seeing it, they were right. It just really wasn't that great.

If you haven't seen it, you can stop reading it now, since there's spoilers.

For one thing, there's no really huge, climatic battle that fills up 1-2 episodes like there was in the beginning of the series. I expected this massive battle and even though there was some battle, it was separated by long moments of Clous and Lavi trying to find themselves and flying around and going "Wee, we finally crossed the Grand Stream!" Booorrrrinnnggg!

I don't want an anime to end with some crappy anti-climatic moments with no drama.

The other thing that bugged me is they left so much open. What EXACTLY was Exile? What was the Grand Stream and why was it there? What was Al's connection to Exile? Why was Disith freezing and snowing, and Anatoray green yet there wasn't enough water, and why was there a desert between?

And why was the planet they were living on shaped like this???

If you want questions that get answered, it's best not to watch anime.

So I've noticed. The japanese love unanswered questions, I guess it either allows room for sequels/fanfiction, or they just love the speculation.

And then when they create a prequel, sequel or side-story it only serves to complicate or open up more questions than it answers.

I just never could bring myself to watch Last Exile.  Dunno if I'm just spoiled by watching on DVD, didn't want to support the abortion of a channel that is G4FuckTV, or didn't want to fire up ye olde VCR again.

Producers of anime need to either learn to plan their series better, wait for the mangas to reach a good stopping point before adapting them, or get out of the 26 episode rut they're all in.  My most recent favorite anime series suffered greatly from the second on that list, bringing down an otherwise perfect show.  All they had to do was wait a year on it to allow the next manga volume to wrap up the current storyline so as to come to a logical and satisfying ending point, but they blew it.

The only saving grace for this problem is the chance of eventually getting either an OVA or a movie out of the deal.  But that's not guaranteed, as in the example I mentioned above.

As for why Gungrave hasn't aired yet, it's because it's still being dubbed.  They've only released the first two DVD volumes so far....

I don't mind the idea of making a 26 episode production as long as there's not some sort of cliffhanging stopping point.  With a lot stuff done in arcs, it can sometimes work this way and another series can be made to wrap up everything.

What I've come to seriously dislike is the Inu-Yasha/Yu-gi-oh style where the series is kept on life support by cramming it full of filler.  Save the money and go on a vacation or work on something else until the mangaka gets farther in the story.  Jeez.  I know it doesn't work that way, but it should.  It ridiculous to try and make something when you don't have enough story yet.

BTW, G4 is running an all-day marathon of Last Exile on Saturday (from 11AM to midnight CST).  I'll tape the whole thing and give it a watch.  If it's as good as people have said, I may buy it.

I'm starting to notice what a whiny annoying bitch Lavi is.

The one anime that had the worst ending I've ever seen was one called Nightwalker: Midnight Detective. Saw most of it, and bought the two DVDs of it to see the rest of the series. Buying the dvds was probably the worst decision I've ever made.

The series is like a mating of Hellsing and Detective Conan. You have this vampire who solves crimes committed by nightcrawlers. He meets some little girl and has to save her life by biting her and turning her into a vamp herself. And behind the crimes is the vampire who bit him and became his gay lover, some fag named Kain. And Kain runs around saying that him and the vampire detective will be lovers again and lead the armies of darkness to armageddon and destroy the world.

The last episode seems like everything's going crazy.. there's lots of backstabbing, main characters dying, friends becoming enemies... and then suddenly you find out it's a dream or vision, and it didn't really happen, and Kain goes on about the end of the world but nothing really happens.

So the entire series ends in a very open ended anti-climatic ending. And in tiny text it says "to find out more, read the manga!" Fuck the manga.

If it's anything at all like Hellsing, you really should read the manga.

Then again, the manga's almost always better.

Except with Kare Kano.  But you have to start picking up volume eight to continue where the show leaves off.
