Pleasant Grove: Criminal charges not filed so far; animal was family pet

A 6-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pit bull Friday evening in a Pleasant Grove neighborhood.

Dallas police Sgt. Gil Cerda said that Scott Warren was inside his home when the family's 1-year-old dog attacked at about 6 p.m. on the 1900 block of Prichard Lane. Scott died while en route to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

"The mother was apparently outside," Sgt. Cerda said. "When she came in, she saw the dog mauling the child."

Sgt. Cerda said that the mother was cooperating with authorities and that no criminal charges had been filed Friday night.

The attack came only a day before the start of a new Texas law that allows felony charges to be filed against the owner of a dog that kills or seriously injures someone. The law, one of the stiffest in the nation, can mean prison sentences for owners found to be negligent or who have dogs known to be dangerous.

Named Lillian's Law, the legislation was sparked by the 2005 fatal mauling of 76-year-old Lillian Stiles by six pit bull-Rottweiler mixes in Central Texas. A pit bull was also responsible for killing a 10-year-old girl in San Antonio earlier this year.

The pit bull responsible for Friday's attack was taken away from the house by Dallas animal control officers. Neighbors said that Scott's family had moved in only about four months ago, but that their dogs had already become a nuisance.

One neighbor, Rudy Lopez, said he saw a woman beating one of the dogs a few weeks ago with a shovel after it was involved in a fight with another dog. Another, Anthony Mack, said that he couldn't understand why a child would be left inside with one of the animals.

I don't like pit bulls myself but I don't think they're evil or anything.  I tend to agree with something posted on Wikipedia about this:

Too many people who own these dogs are fucking morons.  It wouldn't be so much of a problem if these were chihuahuas or something but a pit bull.  Shit.  I came face-to-face with one (or a similar-looking dog) the other day.  Normally it's fenced in, but the fence was open and it was running loose-- which seems to be the norm among the great number of retards that live in this city.  Anyway, the damn dog scared the shit out of me.  How the hell am I suppose to fight off a dog like that?  At least the damn chihuahua than runs loose can be dispatched by dumping water on him.

Six-year-old Scott Warren died from his injuries after his pet pit bull attacked him.

DALLAS  --  The mother of a 6-year-old boy who died Friday after he was mauled by his family's pet pit bull is warning other families about mixing children and pit bulls, a breed with a reputation for aggressiveness.

Kressie Warren said her family was watching television in a bedroom at their Pleasant Grove home when their 1-year-old pit bull attacked her son Scott, latching on to the little boy's face and neck.

"All of a sudden, the dog just jumped up, lunged at him," said Warren.

Warren and her 13-year-old daughter tried to pry the dog off of Scott.

"We had to fight the dog," said Warren who was visibly upset while talking about the attack.

"My daughter was pulling it back, I was trying to pry his mouth loose and finally I was able to get his mouth loose," she said.  "He still jumped at him. I threw him out, shut the door and my daughter called 911."

The little boy died on the way to the hospital.

The family adopted the dog when it was four weeks old and Warren said it had never showed aggression until the fatal attack.

"He just snapped. He took my son's life."

Clutching a school photo of her son, Warren choked back cries as she talked about him. "This is him, this is my little six year old that I'll never get to hug and kiss anymore, never," she said.  "He was my life."

Warren said she wanted to tell her story so she could warn other families about having pit bulls as pets.

"Only suggestion I can tell parents thats got pit bulls and children, get rid of them. Do not ever think about getting one."

The Warrens' pit bull will be euthanized.

The fatal mauling came a day before a new state law took effect in which dog owners whose pets attack and seriously injure someone could face up to 10 years in prison. In a fatal attack, the sentence could increase to up to 20 years.

Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Gil Cerda said it's too early to say whether anyone will face criminal charges.

Congratulations on figuring out what everyone else with half a brain already knows.  And it only took your son's life to come to that conclusion.  Some people don't need to breed.

Oh, and last night while delivering pizza, I almost got attacked by a pit bull that was outside any fenced area, but was luckily on a chain. It scared the shit outta me because it came out of nowhere, apparently hiding under some bushes, and I had to run backwards because I was within the chain's reach. I reserve the right to fuck up any dog that tries to kill me while I'm trying to do my job. Keep your damn dogs inside.

I wonder what the best move to make on a dog doing something like that is.

Pull it back like someone was doing in that article can't be it.  I would say either 1) attempt to pry the jaws open. 2) Choke it. 3) Gouge it's eyes.

One of my best friends has a purebred pitbull and she is the sweetest thing ever.  She's almost aggressively nice because she'll crawl all over your lap and stuff.  I know that's just one example, but any dog can be agressive depending on the owner. 

Last night, I took my friend's Boston Terrier out to go potty and some kids came up from behind the house (they live in a duplex type setting).  The one girl cried and ran away from the dog, and she must have been like 14 or 15.  I mean, c'mon, little dogs can be scary but that dog wouldn't hurt anything.

Some people are just stupid when it comes to dogs.

That's because it was a girl pit. The male pits are more agressive, and they like to beat their mates if the food isn't cooked right.

Why is it that every male pit I see, they haven't neutered it? Don't they remember what Bob Barker said?!
