Not another membership card!
« on: Sep 05, 2008, 08:17:08 PM »
I was at Showcase Cinemas today and they talked me into getting their free membership card. Supposedly it gives me discounts on movies and food or something. But knowing me I'll never use it.

What I can't figure out is why the hell every damn place out there now has some kind of stupid membership card. The movie theaters now? What's next, the corner hot dog stand? I assume they're a way to try to get people to come to the places more often by 'rewarding' them when the come, but no membership card has completely changed my habits. And most of them seem useless and I barely use them.

So far I have:
- My first one, a Kroger Plus card. Why you should get discounts on food ONLY if you have a card is beyond me, but this is why the Meijer department store chain refuses to use discount cards.. the sales apply to everyone.

- Auto Zone rewards card. The only one I actually use enough to justify carrying it. Every $20+ I spend I get a point, at 5 points I get $20 on the card. I now have $40 which I'll probably use for rear shocks or spark plugs. I wish Murray's had one of these.

- Speedway Rewards. The guy on the register forced this on me, the bastard refused to take no for an answer. I only go to Speedway if their gas is the cheapest, and I swipe it anyway, so I probably have enough points for a cup of coffee. Useless.

-  Best Buy Rewards and Borders Rewards. The most useless of the cards I have. I've never used both. I don't shop enough at either to care. To hell with them.

And the bookstore I work at has rewards cards as well that are actually somewhat useful if you're a student and spending hundreds on books. You get $5 on the card for every $100 or so you spend on textbooks, so if you spend like $400+ you're getting quite a bit back.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

Hey, man, don't diss the Kroger card! That's coupons for broke people. Also for rich people, but broke people are cooler. I don't know about other places, but I know that the Kroger stores here have this promotion where you can hit up Kroger-owned gas stations and get $.10 off per gallon if you use your card. And if you know someone who works there, you can use their phone number and get discounts. :D

As far as other rewards cards go, I'm cheap enough that if a place has a card, I grab one. Even if I'm only in a place like twice a year, those two times a year I want a discount, no matter how small it is. I make my own clothes, cook at home, and ride a bike to save money, though, so I'm a freak.

CVS's Card > Walgreens. Walgreens makes you pay for it while CVS's gives you coupons everyday. While the CVS coupons are mostly shitty, I am sure alot of people need incontinance care and back lotion...

Tell me about it.  We buy Eddie's mom about $100 of the CVS Depends every three weeks, and I always have some store-brand coupons.  Ten bucks is ten bucks.  :-\

We have the Kroger gas deal too, plus ours is a Signature store next to the neighborhood, so we can stroll up tree-lined streets with our little foldie-cart when the weather is cool to shop.  Their by-mail coupons generated from what one buys are the best.

I got a movie member card since it was free, but I did so knowing that I only go to theaters once or twice a year on average.

I thought Krogers were dead.  Guess it was just SA that killed all of theirs.

Yeah, $20 bucks.  A bit is right.

Must be....cause Kroger bought up all the locally owned "Gerbs" supermarkets a few years back.

First I find out 7-11's are still alive and now Krogers.  Do Winn-Dixies also still exist in a magical fairy patch o'er yonder?

In case you didn't know, Nuri, everything in the Midwest is about 2 - 10 years behind.

Texas is so progressive and all.

And I don't know what a Winn-Dixies is. I did see a Big Boy back in 2000....I think it's gone now though.

There have three Winn-Dixies in Meridian, all within a five mile radius.  But their prices are high.

Publix requires no card... so I go there. Winn Dixies are always... wierd and smelly. I'd love to shop at a Fresh Market, but the closest one is in Coral Gables. It's the one where the Top Chef Miami contestants always went to.
