Title: Wow, this is ugly. (a.k.a. Hello, new Jem comic.)
Post by: B E C K on Mar 25, 2015, 05:44:49 PM
Seriously.  All of their faces look like five year olds.  Even the Misfits.  Congratulations on body diversity or whatever but why did that mean nose bridges and cheekbones had to die?

Archived 4chan thread w/ comic pages.  I like the alt covers better than any of the other art.

I never realized Willow has her father's face until I googled images of her to see if she would make an okay Shana.

I wish they had just involved Christy Marx.

It might never see release. That movie has been in the can for months now and as far as I know it still doesn't have a release date. They just missed the post Christmas/ Pre-Summer time frame where they push a lot of these movies they aren't sure about...so they'll probably hold off till the sept-nov area to throw this one out if they ever do.

They picked the lightest skinned mixed African American they could find for Shana.

It just so happens she's the daughter of Michael from Lost.

I was thinking more like Willow as Jem. You know, cause the Smiths don't give a shit at all

Don't forget the half-white Aja.  BLEH.  I would've loved an Arden Cho-type to have that part instead.

The chick that is playing Aja also played Velma in some direct to DVD Scoby Doo movies too.

Looking at that first picture and all I can think is "Oh god, they're doing the Jpop idol thing..."

Also, token minority character is token. (yes I know the original series had her too, still...)

Which "token" minority, dude?  The black chick or the Asian chick?  Or the Latino Jem's in love with?  Or the Latina they add to the band later?  Just saying.

I meant the black woman. I thought the other three were all Caucasian.
Horray for representing different ethnic groups, but I still think it looks like nauseatingly happy J-pop.

No, they'll all whine about the patriarchy and male privilege rape culture, and make shitty fanfics and rule 34 pr0n.

I saw the movie poster for Jem last time I was at the theater. It wasn't really all that outrageous at all.

So as an apples and oranges exercise, what's worse, new Jem or new Sailor Moon?

Did anyone watch the new Sailor Moon? I forced myself to sit through the first episode and I thought it was just awful. It's this new thing that's not even as good as the old thing!

Where's aDam? I need to hear his thoughts now.

Sorry about the derailment. I'm aware of this Jem thing, but I was never really big on Jem in the first place so it doesn't bother me much. When you think about it though, it's kind of just following the trend. Remember when we were kids most of the characters in our cartoons and comics were all grown men and women? Now they're all teens or younger. It's not that surprising.

I've been watching SMC, mainly since my niece loves it and I do what she tells me.

I barely remember Jem from my childhood.

As if you don't know all about the influence of adorable children. Personally there's not enough blood & guts and/or tits & ass for my taste, and I certainly don't find it funny or nostalgic.

The new Archie!
I haven't read an Archie book since junior high. Since then it seems it's been all about how many ridiculous crossovers they can come up with, or how PC they have to be or how many shocking twists they can come up with for media attention. I guess this is the latest one? At least it doesn't look as desperate as the last attempt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Archies) to modernize Archie....

I haven't read it, but at a glance this one looks to be less cynical, maybe? Like the people behind it actually give a fuck about making it smart and entertaining.

Although I'm sure it could quickly devolve into CW-style teen drama BS.

Yeah, I miss cartoons with adult characters.  I'm sick of the "wacky" kid protag.

SMC is shit.  I tried.  I really tried.  I sat through like a generous handful of eps, doing this every other week thang.  No.  Just no.  Dropped it like a hot potato.

Feel my Transformers pain.....now times it by 4.  Because there are 4 shitty Transformers movies, and two shitty G.I. Joe ones too. Thank God they haven't got that MOTU movie off the ground.

No, the MOTU movie's still in the pipeline.  I remember reading something about it the other day.  Okay, here we are:
http://deadline.com/2016/01/masters-of-the-universe-mcg-sony-pictures-1201688130/  You're not misreading that link address.  It does say "McG."

Maybe... one day Jem reboot by someone who cares.  Maybe.  One day.

McG being attached to this flick is even more reason for it to never happen, but movie has been in the pipeline as far back as the 2002 He-Man cartoon series. So I don't attach much to these recent rumors.

So I came across a link to read the Jem comic and--as I now have a great deal of free time and was very, very bored--I read it.  I still hate the main artist's art--mainly the way she draws faces--and was relieved to find a few issues featuring other artists.  And I think I find something nauseating about the color palette.  Anyway, the series itself is a passable way to spend some time.  It also does some cute things like having Kimber dress up as Left Shark for a Halloween party.  That was adorable.

It's incredibly irking, however, how they're pushing relationships pretty hard when it comes to the Holograms.  I hate that Noah's ark pairing shit.  Let some people be single.  Let relationships have time to build and boil.  Let the Holograms be focused more on their music and their careers.  Jem's the only one that appears to give a shit about anything career-wise when it comes to the group.  And they're all incredibly self-absorbed.  They've all turned into Kimber or something.  In the comic, the Holograms no longer run Starlight House and care for foster girls.  It's really a shame.

Also, they added a transgendered Misfit.  I feel like they brought her in to do a hammy "yo, I'm trans, u guise" story because they throw out the whole "oh no, i'm trans-do i tell them-tears-i told them-yay" all out in the same issue.  I understand she's a self-insert for the artist and it's supposed to draw from some of the artist's experiences, but it still felt very rushed and forced.

tl;dr  Jem comic not that bad but Holograms are shallow and art still kinda meh imo.
