LMAO!
I think it would be really neat as a web comic, but in no way EVER would I watch a cartoon of this.

Okay I would watch it, but it would be HORRIBLE.

Anything with the Joker in it I will watch. I may cringe through it like The Batman, but I watch it.

The only good thing to come out of The Batman was The Batman VS Dracula movie.

Really?  I didn't like that in the least.  The first two Batman/Superman team-up eps were the only thing I could really manage to watch aside from the episodes that introduced Batgirl.

Word. Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is the WORST. Never heard it referred to as Marvel Babies before, that's an apt burn.

Hahaha. I was waiting to see who would jump on that first.

Honestly, I'm way behind on Avengers, but I do like it. And I can't remember the last time I actually enjoyed the opening song to an American cartoon. When it first started, I was like, "Oh no, this is gonna be totally Fruitsville and I'm gonna feel embarrassed every time I hear it," but then it was awesome and totally show appropriate. The vocals are still pretty wankerish, but the intro gets you pumped for the episode. Kinda like He-Man and Transformers back in the day.

I can't wait to see it blow up and go batshit crazy with cameos and cast additions as time goes by.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Rama on Jan 18, 2011, 01:30:47 AM
I do wish they hadn't with the Wolverine and the X-Men look, but the stories are good. And I'm mainly a story guy. I can't watch something just cause it's pretty...and I also don't discount something just because it doesn't look like I think it should.

I'm really hope they don't shy away from using all the Marvel roster. I don't see any reason why they could. Disney owns them all now, and I don't think there are any other Marvel toons in production at the moment that would conflict with.

I just can't get into Young Justice though. I've tried...it looks great no doubt, but I just can't get into the story of it.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: joe on Jan 18, 2011, 01:37:10 AM
Wait, how many episodes of Young Justice have there been? I've only seen the opening two-parter.

I don't mind the Avengers' animation one bit. It's super-basic and clean, so there's no reason for it to ever get sloppy. So hopefully it won't.

I think they released it as chopped up little webisodes first? But I didn't watch those, so I saw the two-parter where they form the team first, but then they go back to doing solo intro episodes, which kinda bums me out, but it won't take long to get past those.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Rama on Jan 18, 2011, 01:55:35 AM
I think that's all there has been. Better to ask Beck then me. But so far it's not doing it for me...I might give it a few more episodes.

And I don't mind the animation..it does the job. I just wish it could have been a little more flashy. I'm not knocking it though. I'm sure the more simple models allow them churn new episodes a lot faster. As long as it doesn't end up looking like Dr. Katz.

And yeah there was a bunch of webisodes, that then they edited together into like 3 or 4 episodes. They repeat the show a lot too. It's on like 3 times a week and then they have like a marathon ever month and half it seems.

One thing I do like is that I've found myself liking Wasp in this toon. I was never a real big fan of hers in the comics, but for some reason I like her in the show. Although it's a sausage fest in there so I hope Mocking Bird and Ms. Marvel will be joining up soon.

My apologies. I am unsure if this means you would enjoy it no matter what, or that you merely just don't care at all for it no matter what it is.

The latter, though I'm lying. I enjoy Marvel stuff when I can understand it without reading ten years of comics first. Whereas I can't enjoy DC stuff unless it reaches up to its armpit into the depths of continuity.

The only thing you guys need to know about Young Justice is that it's produced and written by THE MIGHTY GREG WEISMAN! Who is THE MIGHTY GREG WEISMAN you ask? Not only was he the creator, producer and head writer for Gargoyles, he was a writer for the good seasons of The Batman. He was also one of the masterminds behind Spectacular Spider-Man. So, by default, Young Justice is gonna kick ass!

I remember when they first released the character designs and everyone was all, "Boo! Hiss!"

But I tried to be enthusiastic, I even kind of liked what they did with Joker.

Then I watched the first episode, and it turned out the knee jerk reaction was the correct one after all. And none of the other episodes I attempted to sit through ever changed my mind.

That was also my reaction to Transformers Animated...except no matter how stupid it looked, it couldn't be as stupid as the ten years of drivel that followed Beast Wars. And based on what I've heard people say, it seems that I was right.

But I'm still not watching that ugly mess.

TFA was fucking awesome. I was turned off by the art at first, as well, but once I held some of the figures in my hand I was greatly impressed. Seriously some of the best engineering the franchise has had in years.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: joe on Jan 21, 2011, 08:23:27 PM
I don't see how the quality of the toys figures into the quality of the show.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Fiero on Jan 21, 2011, 10:27:22 PM
For Transformers, they are a packaged deal in my eyes, especially when the designs carry so well into the toys. The show exists only to sell toys, right? Well, it did, and it also made me happy in my robo-pants.

Cameo-gasms every other episode at some point did a lot for me.

I really liked the writing, though I can admit it was a bit iffy in the beginning. They managed to have a 'human' counterpart that did not make me want to murder people and they were able to approach the series in a fresh way by having a different background. I really liked it.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Rama on Jan 22, 2011, 12:44:03 AM
Yeah Animated's art turned me off at first too. It wasn't until a buddy let me borrow his DVDs and taped Season 3 that I really started to appreciate it.

And I was lucky in that I was able to find most of the toys on clearance so they didn't cost me much.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Rodent of Unusual Size on Jan 23, 2011, 12:12:20 AM
The show exists only to sell toys, right?

This is not directed at you personally, Fiero, so I hope you don't take it that way.

But it is to every crappy TF show apologist who's said the same thing over the years regarding everything from Beast Machines (since everything prior to that happened before my INTERNET arrival and the revival of my interest in TF media) to Prime: the various Transformer cartoons certainly exist with the exclusive purpose of selling toys, but that's no excuse to allow it to be any definition of crappy. I don't care if it sells a billion toys: if it looks stupid, or has crappy VAs, has no plot to speak of, or never advances the mythos in any meaningful way, or any permutation or combination of the above, I will bitch loudly and proudly.

This is because, as a TF nerd, I expect my personal preferences be catered to in every minor detail and reserve the right of taking offense when they are not. Nothing is exempt from my often anal-retentive scrutiny, as the purpose of such media is to validate my appreciation for the 25+ years of Transformer continuity, whether I buy zero, one, a few, most, or all the toys featured therein is irrelevant to me. You may believe this to be a ridiculous standard, and I would agree...but no more so than the idea that anyone over the age of 10 ever buys a toy or watches cartoons for their own enjoyment.

Granted, I'm one of the least nit-picky of fans. In fact, I disassociated myself from the outright fandom well over five years ago. But I reserve the right to not like what I don't like. You could sit me down to a presentation of Shakespeare's MacBeth, but if it's being performed by a troupe of midget Lapplanders in blackface who got dropped off a short bus, I'm outta there. Regardless of the production quality, the intense level of writing, the scenery and backgrounds, and the sheer effort put into it, it's still going to look retarded.

Transformers deserves better than that, and so do I.

Hallelujah.

I still have two episodes of the Prime mini-series to go, but so far my outlook is pretty grim.

I mean... zombie Transformers. Really. Hasbro doesn't miss a fucking beat.

"Zombies are super popular these days. How can we capitalize on that?"
"How about we have the Autobots fight zombie Transformers?"
"FFFFFFUUUCK YEA-YEEEAAAH!!!"
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Fiero on Jan 23, 2011, 11:36:28 PM
The people that write the checks want the show to sell merchandise. I liked that the toys in this case strengthened the fictional world instead of just being a bunch of crap (Movieverse toys, for the most part, are the best examples). My apologies for using what I know is a shitty excuse, but the executives at Hasbro would agree with me.

Also, I don't think the show needs an excuse. I think it was fucking excellent. It was the happiest I've been watching Transformers since Beast Wars.

We'll see how it works out with the on-going series. Despite the weird character designs and goofy kids' look, I'm still holding out hope, but....

I mean... zombie Transformers. Really. Hasbro doesn't miss a fucking beat.

Speaking of zombie Transformers...IDW is doing a company-wide "Infestation" story line that I think starts next month in their comics. But, seriously, zombies being present in the GIJoe and TF books is understandable, but crossing over into Star Trek, too? Ugh.

The zombie story would go a long way to explain why they recently killed off Cobra Commander in one of the Joe books, come to think of it.

Damn it, I did not know it was going to be a crossover thing. I thought it was going to be an elseworlds type of setup. I've only heard about it, not looked at the news sources myself.

It was told to me as Zombies vs Robots vs Transformers vs GI Joe vs Star Trek. I expected a book WITH THAT TITLE.

It also includes Ghostbusters...didn't know that. But even if they're only crossing over in Infestation-specific titles (not the mainline series), it's supposed to have repercussions in every title, particularly Transformers.

New episodes aren't coming till after the Thor movie comes out in May.

http://tv.ign.com/articles/115/1156622p1.html
Quote
"The show will be back right after Thor opens [in theaters], which is the first week of May," announced Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel Television, to an excited audience. "And we'll be having brand new episodes. We'll run them sort of between when Thor opens and, of course, the only other date you need to know this summer, which is when Captain America premieres in July. So you'll have plenty of Avengers and that'll pretty much wrap up season one."

And after cheers from the excited audience subsided, Loeb went ahead and played the first episode of the new batch in its entirety.

SPOILER ALERT! What follows is a description of the episode's highlights.

Kicking off the episode is a grand battle between part of the Avengers (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Wasp, Hawkeye and Hank Pym) and the Serpent Society. Of course, the outcome of who wins or loses the battle isn't as important as the lineup changing event that follows: Pym quits the team. It would seem he's had enough of the meaningless violence.

Back at the mansion, Black Panther and the Hulk bring into custody the Red Ghost and his Super Apes. It seems the villains were in the process of attacking the Baxter Building (luckily, the Fantastic Four wasn't home) with access codes that allowed them to elude the building's security systems.

Ultimately, it's discovered that Pym's Ultron creation has evolved its original programming – make the Earth a better place – and decided that the only way to achieve that prime directive is to wipe out humanity. It begins with the Avengers and does so by orchestrating the Serpent Society, Red Ghost, and Super Apes attacks.

It then accesses the mansion's security systems and turns them against the Avengers. This includes accessing the Iron Man armor -- while Tony Stark is in it – and turning it against Thor. Ultimately, the team comes together to battle the villainous robot. But not before one them, Thor, falls in battle. It appears as if the thunder god gets disintegrated by one of Ultron's massive lasers – his hammer the only survivor.

Stark rejoins the battle in his Mark I armor – the only piece of low-tech battle gear the robot can't control – and the fight soon comes to an end after the Hulk enters the melee. But as for what exactly happens to Ultron, Thor, Pym and the rest of the team... well, you'll just have to watch the episode to find out.

There are two three-episode arcs in particular that are AMAZING. I sort of also forgot about another arc that was pretty cool. I think I may have been focusing on the bad episodes a bit much. Also there is an R2-D2 heavy episode that was kind of odd, but interesting.

YJ bores you and Clone Wars excites?  Am I living in opposite world?

Yeah. I'm not a big D.C. guy and YJ seems to be bad guy of the week shit loosely tied together with cliche mysterious group pulling the strings. And the Characters are pretty one dimensional too. I mean it just goes Super Boy=Pissed, Miss Martian=Horny, Chic Speedy=Bad ass, Kid Flash=Cocky loud mouth, etc. etc. It's like someone just picked their characters out of "how to write mundane TV" hat. In fact on those nights when I have sat down to watch the whole night I've found myself drawn into shows like Ben 10, then YJ. YJ is pretty, but that's about it. If they canceled it and brought back Batman: Brave and the Bold I wouldn't be sad in the least.

Clone Wars has boring episodes, but I can usually spot those from the trailers and I just skip them. The last 6 episodes have been really good, and they should have spread that love out instead of having that boring ass middle of the season. Clone Wars tends to prove out my theory that Lucas is a good idea man, but that's it and when he writes and directs he fucks it up. It's always better when he lets other people handle those duties. SW was really a fluke brought about by not having the money to do his "vision" and lucking into good actors. The rest of the movies like Raiders, and ESB he just came up with idea and it fell to others to flesh it out and that's why those movies are so great. Me, I just pretend the before the SE are all there are, and it allows me to still like Retard Wars without being a bitter cynic that I would have turned into had I tired to make the prequels work.

Because I'm tired of young Anakin (I don't watch Clone Wars but I assume he's still young) being all heroic and crap.  He's Vader and he's EVIL.  I want him evil!  Being good just makes him stupid and boring.  Maybe I'm still stuck on the bad taste of prequels-Anakin but I hate young, wannabe hero Anakin.

Rama is sadly right about YJ.  It's like everything Weisman already did on Gargoyles but totally not as good.  I want BTAS back.  Or even STAS.  Or maybe COMBINED.    But I wouldn't wipe my ass with B:BatB.  EW.   :nono:

There are no new stories or character archetypes.  Prepare to live the rest of your lives out in mind numbing boredom, broken by bits of excitement from the alien minds of the japanese.

I actually don't mind Cliche. Cliche works, that's why people use them. It's just that YJ is making the Cliche THE story, instead of young heroes trying to learn how to one day run with the big boys. I mean there is plenty they could do, and they don't. They did that one episode with Aqualad that seemed to give him more depth, but then they wrapped it up with one nice little bow at the end.

After Clone Wars is over, which I think they said they only plan to do it for 5 seasons and the season finally for the 3rd is coming up, I'd kinda like to see a show done the same way but set between A New Hope, and The Empire Strikes Back. I think it'd be fun to see a series that overs those years. What I don't want to see is some bullshit set after Return of the Jedi. Sadly such a show would rob me of the smooth voice of Colt 45 pitch man and lady killer Billy Dee Williams. I know they could get him, he did Titan Maximum for God's sake. Could get Hamil too...and I don't know how much Jenny Craig is paying Fisher, but she might could use the work as well.

It's hard to tell what people expect from these shows.  They're not solely for adults.  The story lines aren't going to be overly complicated.  The characters are not going to be too deeply developed.  But how much development is necessary to make them personable and understandable to children and still mildly intriguing for us?  That's what they're aiming for a happy medium between kid and adult.  Kidult entertainment.  I don't think you can hold it to an adult standard.  The cliched characters are fun and easy to understand.  It's only been like what 6 episodes? 10 year olds are still just getting to know these guys.

Also, wasp is a cunt.

Apparently, a Lucasfilm representative at C2E2 confirmed that the company will be making another 'St*r WarzzZZ' animated series that will serve as a sequel to 'Return of the Jedi' and feature all the original characters from the first trilogy. It will be in the same computer animated format as the current 'Clone Wars' series on Cartoon Network.

Re: YJ.  I actually didn't expect anything from it.  I strongly disliked Teen Titans, The Batman, and tBatB.  I didn't see them magically changing my mind.  I'm at the point where I've accepted that I'm far outside the target demographic and it will be a rare time when I enjoy a show aimed primarily for teens and tweens.  I do think though that they honestly could've done better and still catered to their intended audience.

I have no probs with the main characters themselves, overused stereotypes or otherwise.  (Except that Aqualad's really kinda boring but that can be fixed.)  I think I stated it before, but YJ would have benefited imo by having stories featuring character situations.  Nothing happens in the damn show without it being some "brilliant scheme" thought-up by the big bad organization of talking heads.  I'd like to see them tackling teen situations--school, family life, etc--as well as superhero duties that have little if anything to do with some cackling silhouette's heinous idea.

I think Weisman and co. did this great in Gargoyles.  Not everything that happened was a Xanatos plot.  For ex., if anyone remembers this, that episode where Puck tries to steal the Phoenix Gate.  That was related to the Gathering which in turn ended up being connected to Xanatos in the strangest way possible, but the crux of that episode was that Puck was doing what he wanted for his own reasons.  If that had been a YJ, it'd end with them saying some shit like "Sure you didn't get the Phoenix Gate but you were doing just what you were supposed to do, muah ha ha".  Boo.  STFU.  This giant over-reaching plot arc is coming off so damn contrived.

Speaking of Puck, have they done a YJ Midsummer Night's Dream episode yet? That's a Weisman hallmark. I remember when they did it in Spectacular Spider-Man and I was like, "Are you fucking kidding me with this shit?"

Weisman should just skip the middlemen and do A Midsummer Night's Dream: The Animated Series.

You guys are making me feel like I shouldn't even bother with YJ.

They have done some of the character moments, but not enough to care. Such as Arrowette getting accepted to the Wayne Academy without applying.

The committee of evil plot isn't great, but I still say this show has potential.  I'm feeling the strained relationship between supes and superboy.

What's the point?

It's not as if it's competing right now with something else.  At least where I'm concerned.  If it had competition, I could see myself dumping this show.

I get the feeling Avengers EMH was canceled. There was no mention of it at the Disney Upfronts and there's no toyline.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Fiero on Apr 12, 2011, 11:59:51 AM
They've already completed 13 episodes of season 2 according to the wiki. Marvel has enough toy lines this year with Thor and Captain America that perhaps they felt they would over saturate if they added that line as well. Perhaps in the fall with season 2.
Title: Re: Gotham High
Post by: Rama on Apr 12, 2011, 01:44:22 PM
If EMH is canceled then Disney only has themselves to blame. First they move it from Wed night to Sun morning, which is pretty much a dead zone that use to be used for reruns of Star Trek, and then they don't give us any new episodes for 5 months, and then they only show like 5 of the episodes from season one in reruns. Like I've said before, it seems like every time I tune in the episode 459 is on. I really liked that episode when I first saw it, but now can't stand it cause they seem to show it every other week.

Alright Fuck you Disney XD. I was able to see the Casket of Winters episode, but then last two episodes they never showed a repeat on Sun or Wed night. Instead they were putting on stuff like Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Now fast forward to today I see that Avengers will be on tonight. I assume this will be a repeat of this mornings new episode, but nooooooooooo instead it is was 459 AGAIN! Shit, they should take the tape for the episode and burn it, I must have seen it 20 times now. So now I'm three episodes behind. Probably the next time I see a new episode of this show it'll be when they release it on DVD.   :goddammit:
