Title: ThunderCats bowels are loose.

http://www.craveonline.com/entertainment/tv/article/thundercats-is-returning-to-tv-in-2011-103565

Quote
“In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”

The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including “The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights” and “Halo Legends.” WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter’s expertise to give the “ThunderCats” characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series.

I'm thinking another "Wolverine and the X-Men" but with ThunderCats... and no X-Men.   :poo:

As I said on Facebook. Who gets to make the toys?

Actually considering it's WB I'm sure it'll go to Mattel.

I don't see any of this turning out well...for me that is. I'm sure kids will love it. As far as the toys go, I hope Bandai releases figures of the classic show in their S.H. ehhhhhhhhh...I really wish it was Mattel. Thudercats: Classics sounded real good. Won't be getting that from Bandai.

Those do not look god awful. How do they look when you actually have them?

I do not think a Bandai line would be terrible, but Mattel could really rock that shit. In fact at SDCC last year they said they really, really want the license (this was in the Q&A, and specifically in regards to the stuff they have done for MOTUC, DCUC, and Ghostbusters).

Yeah, I think they will, too.  Boo.  The chances of getting another show that does the franchise any sort of justice TMNT 2003-style is relatively slim though.  I'm betting we're getting some form of Bruce Timm-esque angular ThunderCats.  I don't want any angular ThunderCats.  You can't hug something with a bunch of points.  It hurts.

Just about as compelling as Transformers.

So here (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Icon_Heroes%2FThundercats&pic=Liono.JPG&dispsize=600&start=0) is a preview of the Lion-O "Staction" figure. Reminds me of the 2002 He-man figures. Might get these if the Bandai stuff doesn't turn out right.

More like "pedophile, ho!"  In an earlier article (http://kotaku.com/5549990/thundercats-writer-murdered):

Quote
Stephen Perry, who was a writer for 1980s cartoon ThunderCats, recently went missing. His van was found last Sunday. Inside it, a man's severed arm. Stephen Perry, police now report, is dead.

The 56-year-old writer went missing from his Zephyrhills, Florida home, which authorities discovered was ransacked. His roommates, James Davis (45) and Roxanne Davis (49), disappeared, but have since been arrested on unrelated charges, writes Tampa Bay Online. James Davis was picked up on drug trafficking charges, and his wife is charged with violating probation.

"I cried. I cried when they told me," says 26-year-old Krystal Carroll, the mother of Perry's 5-year-old son. Last year, Carroll moved out and is currently in another relationship. Perry was slated to appear in court on May 9 for a domestic violence charge against Carroll. He has also been battling cancer as well.

Also, I like how they imply at the end that this event is in anyway connected to the following:

Quote
There have been plans to make a Hollywood version of ThunderCats. The project is currently on hold.

Not that it couldn't be but highly doubtful.

Davis: You give me some of that movie money or I kill you!

Perry: I am not even working on it! If you would just buy IMDBPro I could prove I am not attached.

Davis: Killlll youuuu

He has barely written a thing since then. His last credit was in 2003. The dude was probably barely scraping by.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rama on Jul 13, 2010, 01:21:55 PM
Writing is a feast of famine career. Given he is most know for writing a cartoon in 86, I'd say the guy was in a extended famine. That sort of job is suppose to be a stop over for bigger and better things, not the end all beat all.

He probably had a good amount of loyalties coming in
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Jul 13, 2010, 09:30:15 PM
Royalties?  And probably not.  I don't think cartoon writers now get deals that sweet, let alone in the 80's.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Derrick on Jul 13, 2010, 09:31:20 PM
Doubt it, the average royalty is pennies. The only people who make serious bank from them are people like Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Jul 13, 2010, 10:13:45 PM
I was under the impression that where cartoons are concerned a writer's work more or less became the royalty-free property of whatever company made the show.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.

Almost definitely.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rama on Jul 13, 2010, 11:59:56 PM
Depends on what kind of contract he signed. Doubt it contained royalties though, and even if it did it would only be a few cents per DVD set, probably wouldn't top a thousand a year.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.

Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rama on Jul 14, 2010, 11:46:29 PM
And you're most likely right. Just said it depends, but in this case it was probably just like that. But even if he did get royalties, it wouldn't be enough to live on, let alone attract the gold diggers.

Dude, those designs are great.

Too bad the writing will likely be akin to the ravings of a drooling lunatic.

That's how these things almost always go.

"Hey, look! This is what we're going for!"
"Aww man, that looks sweet!"

Then you watch the actual show which leaves you wondering what the hell went wrong.

So it's okay for them to drive around 3rd Earth in a low-slung Hummer with claws that helps it climb walls and has a massive cannon under the hatchback. It's okay that Lion-O can cut people's asses off with a phallic-growing sword with a cat's eye jammed into it. It's okay that Pan Throw (never gonna forget that now, dammit) can crack skulls with Catpanese clawed nunchucks that shoot hotness and coldness. But somehow Tygra toting a gun is not cool in Rama Town?

I don't think the classics figure looks all that bad, except that Lion's head appears to be on fire in a gusty meadow.

I don't care for the armor on the new Lion-O ... but I am willing to give the show a chance since this doesn't completely shit all over the old, only just slightly.

That's tough, man. That's a difficult question to answer.

Hey, maybe this Lion-O can point the Sword of Omens at Snarf, yell, "HO~~~~~~," and turn him into Battle Snarf.

That's the ticket.

And then Snarf will snarf all of them and snarf the planet they snarfed on all by his snarf, after snarfing Mumm-ra and snarfing the good people to his cause.

So Lion-O and Tygra are brothers in the new series. Apparently Claudus liked to get his swirl on.
http://toynewsi.com/news.php?catid=20&itemid=16842

I don't think the classics figure looks all that bad, except that Lion's head appears to be on fire in a gusty meadow.

I don't care for the armor on the new Lion-O ... but I am willing to give the show a chance since this doesn't completely shit all over the old, only just slightly.

If that's the video I think it is. (too lazy to look) then it has a lack of Panthro, and it looks like most of it wasn't even on 3rd Earth. I'm assuming almost all of that was from some kind of 2 hour premier movie or something. Unless they don't go to 3rd Earth at all and Mumra and the Mutants are on Thundera or something.

But man the original series didn't screw around it was like Title....Thundera blows up....dead Jaga...all before the first commercial break.

What, is this the new convention to replace IAWTP?

Anyway, I liked it. As for Mumm-ra being on Thundera, that was pretty much the whole thing of season three of the old show, so it's not inconceivable. And by virtue of Larry Kenny playing Claudus he'd better have more than a role than "goodbye my son..." *explode* in this mofo, by Jaga!

In an attempt to curb this derail, here's the cast according to Wikipedia.  I can't say I'm too impressed.  Must Friedle and Kevin Michael Richardson come out in everything?  And as much as I like Clancy Brown, is he yet another bad guy?  Ho hum.  Guess it could've been worse but I would've like to hear some fresh voices.  The casting of Emmanuelle Chriqui kinda seems silly, like they put her in there for making the AskMen.com desirable list.

Will Friedle - Lion-O
Emmanuelle Chriqui - Cheetara
Kevin Michael Richardson - Panthro
Matthew Mercer - Tygra
Larry Kenney - Claudus
Clancy Brown - Grune the Destroyer
Robin Atkin Downes - Mumm-Ra
Corey Burton - Slythe
Jim Meskimen - ??

9 minutes from the series premiere

The Bad News: Lion-o's kinda weak.  His hair is stupid and he's in serious danger of becoming an obvious conglomerate of hero tropes.  He speaks and all I hear is Terry McGinnis or Ron Stoppable.  Sorry, but someone else needed to be casted in this role.  The voice is too cardboard cutout and vanilla.

The Good News:  The rest of this shit's fuckin' sweet.  The animation looks marvelous.  The other characters (no Panthro yet, boo) have personalities unlike Young Justice where they're just pretty-looking shadow puppets or Voltron where they're completely inconsistent.  Pikachu-Snarf is adorable.  Cheetara and Tigra have you cheering them on when they appear.  Claudius is a force to be reckoned with.  Wily-Kit and Wily-Kat are actually cute and awesome.  I felt like I was watching something almost Miyazaki-esque when they appeared.  No shit.

What do you mean lion o was the weakest part?  You mean the performance or character handling sucks? Or that the character is weak right now cause that's how it supposed to be.  I mean how else could they have played this, it's exactly as it should be imo.

Panthro looks great! What? Were you thinking about sleeping with him before, but now the deal is off?

I haven't taken your pellets so don't look at me.

I just think he's generic.  He is like some everyday anime hero character that you could place in any old fuckin' game or show: the quirky, not-quite-outsider destined for greatness.  I don't like his character design and I don't like his voice.  Neither one is helping him.  Nothing about this character feels special or different, which is what I would've liked from him.

I don't like how Panthro looks like freakin' Jet Black.  That shit looks awful.  I would have liked him to have a fresh, youthful look like everyone else.  Even Snarf got a face-lift but they just grossified Panthro.  And Kevin Michael Richardson.  Blech.  Not looking forward to that.

I don't care about Panthro's age, but his appearance isn't great. In the old show he was obviously black, but now he's just as racially neutral as everyone else. And the mutton chops are pretty dumb.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: blanktoe on Aug 02, 2011, 03:27:39 AM
i'm still not sold on the character designs either. The producers have said the Lion-O's look will change as he gets more powerful.  Hope his voice changes too. Panthero's look doesn't bother but I am a little sick of the bald "black guy" with side burns look. Kevin Michael Richardson doing the same voice me is a crime.  I do think Cheetatra's character design is much better than the original.

It's funny how the main Thundercats( Lion-o, Tygra, Cheetara, Panthero and The twins) look more humanoid while the other Thundarians look more like cats.

Yeah, but, anyway, I like the show so far.

Jaga's Clerics are baddass! I'm guessing that's how they are gonna explain Cheetara's sixth sense.

Lynx-O and Snow Meow cameo!

Mumm-Ra actually getting his ass kicked.

and the Silverhawks and Tigersharks ARE showing up at some point!

MORE PLEASE!

I'm really digging this show.  I wish some Canadian channel would pick it up.  I'm not sure my bandwidth can handle me downloading another show.

Anyway... Will Friedle >>> * so Lion-O is great.

My only gripe actor wise is the guy who played the King.  He sucked, and he was the original Lion-O so this one is obviously superior.  I was exstatic when he died.

There is nothing new under the sun.  Archetypes are re used there was never any other choice for Lion-O.  He is that archetype.  What were they gonna do make him all dark and batman? That would have just been another archetype.  I guess you just don't like this archetype but it's been in use forever and it's not going anywhere.  It gets its time to shine when it is the key to defeating the big bad and it anchors the scene so that other more quirky archetypes like Tygra...whatever you know all this.

The point is that his archetype serves a purpose in storytelling.

KNOW THIS FUCKWAD!

MY PELLLET COUNT READS -222!

KNOW THAT THE NUMBER 222 IS PART OF THE COVENANT WITH MY ANCESTORS!

This number has been appearing in my life and that of my parents randomly since before I was born.   I could begin to list all the times that it's popped up and the ASTROFUCKINGNOMICAL ODDS against it popping up when it has before, but I won't.

The point is HERE IT IS AGAIN!

OF ALL THE NUMBERS POSSIBLE HERE IT IS!

I'M GONNA LIVE FOREVER WHILE YOU LICK DEMON ASS IN GEHENNA!

PEACE!

i'm still not sold on the character designs either. The producers have said the Lion-O's look will change as he gets more powerful.

Yeah, I'm holding out hope that this will happen.

Quote
There is nothing new under the sun...   The point is that his archetype serves a purpose in storytelling.

Firstly, I want to establish that I just find him the weakest part of the show.  This does not mean that I want him to be "dark or batman".  This does not mean I "just don't like" some archetype.  This doesn't mean I hate his character or anything.  This means in a show full of goodness, he does not shine and he's the hero and the lead character so more was expected from him by me.  Something as little as a different voice actor or a different look or a tweaking of the script could have completely altered my interpretation of him.  As it is, I find him dull and uninteresting.  For comparison's sake, Wily Kat and Wily Kit were on the screen for ten seconds and completely won me over.  Same with Cheetara, Jaga, and Tygra.  There's nothing new about any of those types of characters either so I don't buy the "nothing new" excuse.

Also...

What kind of accent is one of those lizards using?  If you have the episode, go about 12 minutes in.  lol  "Hold your tongue, fool.  They'll kill us!"   :poo:

I don't know...I don't like Tygra as much as the old one. He was an architect that sometimes had a drug problem in the original series, now he is just Lion-O's older douche womanizer brother. I half expected him to dunk Lion-O's head in the litterbox, or depants him in front of the court.

And did they say Tygra was Lion-O's adopted brother at some point I missed. I guessed he was, since they said that the King ship had to go by blood and you know...he isn't a lion, but did they ever say it in the show?

I don't get how a different actor or slight tweak to how he looked would make him shine, I guess that's a chick thing.

I don't find him dull or interesting persay he's a perfect example of the archetype, granted at this stage in pretty much any story that character isn't very interesting.

Those other archetypes are inherently more interesting so you should still buy the nothing new excuse!

Also it doesn't matter if you take more pellets.  The number 222 was created from now where and now it's mojo will linger on this board in perpetuity.  As if my stand had taken a dump in your living room.

My guess is that all the various types of Thundercats can interbreed and their offspring will either take after the mother or the father. So, their mother was probably a tiger, and like you said the crown can probably only be passed down to another lion.

I mean, that's all speculation, because they haven't really had a chance to explain any of it.

They didn't even mention if there had ever been a queen, but obviously we have to assume there was.

Still, it's pretty weird that her existence wasn't even hinted at. You'd think there would be a painting, or an empty throne, or something.

When did he have a drug problem in the original series? It's not some "don't do drugs kids!" one off was it?  Either way the douche womanizer is more interesting in a band of adventurers.

It was in the episode The Garden of Delights. And yeah I think it was a one off episode, with the whole "Just Say No." message.

Tygra has gone for my favorite, to my least favorite in this new show. The fact that he seems to be the only Thundercat that uses a gun, only ads to that. When you are out trying to rebuild your lost world, an intelligent architect is far more useful then a glorified frat boy. I mean when it six of you in the wilderness, a guy with the knowledge of how to design and build structures, is more useful then the guy who can drink you under the table and fail constantly at hitting on the only thing with boobs in the group. The only thing that is making him useful in the new series is his fighting abilities, but the old Tygra had those too.

He's not a drunk frat boy he's the musketeer archetype and that one is 10 times more heroic than the drug addled artist.

When you're out in the wilderness captured by lizard mutants you want the guy with a gun in one hand a bottle of jack in the other to rescue you not the guy who built a lean to to do coke in.

The original Tygra was boring as shit.  He's not even the drug addled artist.  He was just sort of around in the original series.  That one off shouldn't be adding all that character to him for you.  It was a nancy reagan promo.

To my knowledge, they do not because I was wondering the same thing.  I only confirmed it by going to the CN website for the show.  Anyway, maybe now that technology has made its appearance, he'll show more interest in it as the series progresses.

No, it's not a "chick thing".  I can't believe you're a actor and you can't wrap your head around the concept of simple nuances completely changing interpretation.

See reply to Rama above.  Tygra's adopted.  Like Rama said, they specifically mentioned that Tygra is not a member of the royal bloodline and could not inherit the throne.

Also, no one said he's NOT an architect. He could be one of those cocky fuckers who actually has a shit load of knowledge about engineering and shit.

That could very well be true.

No nuance could make that archetype different than what it is or make it "shine" it's not supposed to shine that hard at this point in the story.

And you don't have to like an entire archetype but you do have to admit that those guys are more interesting.  Whose the least interesting musketeer? It's Dartanian/Lion-O at the beginning but later that guy comes into his own and becomes the uber hero.

This is a good point. He very well could be and we just don't know it yet. It could be something that maybe people didn't know about because his father really praised him for being the jock like son and that after they thrown into this situation and Lion-O starts coming into his own as Lord of the Thundercats and he starts to look at him less as a little brother and more as a leader he can start to shed some of that shallowness and allow that other stuff to start to surface. You get a pellet for bringing that up, because you have given me hope for Tygra again.

Glad you did the leg work I was too lazy to. Hopefully they clear that up at some point. I was thinking that might flesh people out since they have met Cheetra and they'd have to give her the 411, but then knowing she was one of Jaga's clerics she probably knows all about them. I think she'll be more the mystery. Course once Willy Kitt and Willy Kat show up you can have that chance to explain things to them.

Well if they used a different archetype it wouldn't be just a nuance.  Like what if Lion-o had tygra's instead?

A slightly different aesthetic look or sound of voice isn't going to fill the empty vessel, that's what will happen as the story unfolds.

He's going to be the weakest link interesting...ness wise at this point no matter what.

If a little tweak like that would make him not the weakest part of the cast for you great, but I'm saying he'd be the weakest link no matter what because of what he is.

That was what I thought about the, "is Tygra the son of Claudus by some tiger chick," from earlier, and that maybe he was a harem baby. But if he's adopted, he could be a purebred tigerman.

I really hope this isn't how it's going to be every week.

20 minutes spent on some random, cockamamie adventure with 2 minutes of the good stuff tagged onto the end? Bullshit.

Also, having every other character voiced by Travis Touchdown is totally distracting. Even Mumm-Ra, for God's sake.

Why didn't they notice an ocean of sand ten feet from where they were standing until Snarf "found" it?

How were they staying afloat when they got dumped into said sand ocean?

How many times can Moby Dick be recycled as a cartoon plot?

Why did the animation quality drop off immediately following the premiere? Typical static headshots with three-frame lipflaps? Gorgeous! Dialogue overtop an extreme zoomout of stick figures? Stupendous!

Rage.

I agree. I'm usually anti-intro, but not for cartoons.

Cartoons need intros, man. And they need to be excessively awesome, to the point where the show itself can never live up to the hype.

The original Thundercats captured this ideal perfectly.

I could see the brilliance of this episode but at the same time I was also very bored.  Which made me feel kinda bad because the plant whos or whatever were kinda cool.  I think it would've had more impact if we had seen those plant guys running around and then this episode came later in the season and I would've been "oh shit, you mean those singing fucks only live one day!?  what a tweeest!".  But as it stood, I didn't care like I thought I should've.  Still liked the plant guys tho'.  Those villains are kinda dull.  I don't know why I think that because it was kinda neat how that one guy went all chameleon and they were tracking the TCs by the buried fish heads but meh.  I enjoyed seeing Panthro smack one in the face but not because I thought Panthro was that damn cool but because those lizard-things are so blah I wanted to punch them.

Also, it didn't help that last week's episode was weak.  Lion-O attitude did a complete 180 in the span of about 24 minutes when they could've (A) had this be a plot point that must be overcome (such as bitchy Leo in the Turtles reboot where he stayed that way for several episodes) or (B) not have done this episode at all.  If it was gone, would anyone miss it?  Would they be able to tell?  Would they care?  I know I wouldn't.  I mean, when I first saw the sand sea I was like "oh cool" but then they didn't do much with it.  (See Avatar:TLA Book 2 for how to do good "heroes in the desert" episodes.)

tl;dr - I really want to like this show more but at least it's better than Young Justice.

They seem to just be going through the standard Sci-Fi story plots with this show. First we get "Mody Dick" rip off episode and now we get the "Brief Candle" episode. I'm half expecting to get the "Ground Hog Day" episode next. And did any one NOT know that guy was going to die and make everyone sad as soon as we found out they only lived a day? I mean really...It would have been more of a surprise if he DIDN'T die at the end of the episode.

And I knew Panthro was showing up as soon as Lion-O flash the Thundercat symbol into the sky. I think that's the first time that has happened in the show and that's a call to all Thundercats. If he was close...he would show up, and since he was overdue I knew he was showing up. And it is sad when the Thundertank gets a better intro that most of the rest of the cast. Speaking of the cast Cheetra is still way ahead in that department. Less is more, it seems. Then Wily Kitt and Katt are next. Tygra made a slight rebound last week, only to lose it this week. Lion-O was better, but it came out of left field and I'm starting to just think he is bi-polar or something.

I really wish they'd just cut all this bullshit and get on with it. I could have done without these last two episodes. They are just filler. Just got straight from escaping Thundera, cornered by Mutants, flash the Thundercat symbol, Pantro shows up, and then we go on from there. Easy.

I'm still hoping it gets better and this just a sad attempt to lay groundwork for amazing stuff later, cause like Beck...I want to like this show.

[WHAT RAMA SAID]

Yeah, imo, we shouldn't be getting this kind of filler until the standard "the core cast of heroes gets seperated and have to look for one another and, oh look, we're havin' an adventure" episode.  The pirates and the little plant dudes got waaay more character development in the last two eps than the Thundercats aside from Lion-O and, yeah, he's like seriously bipolar or sumthin'.  Poor Tygra's getting ripped off, too.  They might as well not have had him around and Lion-O thinks he died.  Tygra could've reappeared somewhere more interesting.  Wasted opportunity.

Anyway this show is pretty much all kinds of awesome.  Filler?  Who fucking cares if the episode is awesome!  Both "filler" episodes have presented interesting and original new characters with a compelling story.  Oh it's a bit cliche?  The alternative is some shitty show where they fight a new bad guy every week.  Sci fi like stories are a best case here.

The Thunderkittens have tails, too. And Grune has a big-assed saber-tooth. And they all have fur on them. I don't see why this sort of thing is suddenly a problem.

Maybe it grew back after Jaga cut it off years ago after a random giant Werecat destroyed the castle on a full moon.

But the somoflange (http://shwiggie.com/media/sounds/thundercats/outake06.mp3) comment won the day.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Aug 20, 2011, 12:45:04 AM

I accepted that the kittens have tails.  Someone from the show, maybe on the blog I linked, talked about how they're acrobats and the tails made sense or whatever.  I just figured they're inverse manxes or freaks.  But then every adult here is tail-less, implying all if not most normal adults don't have tails.  And Panthro conforms to this so he's also normal.  And then grown, adult Panthro has a tail in the freakin' flashback.  Even young Lion-O and Tygra are tail-less.  Not even the redshirt cats have tails.

But I guess that's all minor when we see what an inept, stupid king Claudus was.  "What? There's a book of legend that may exist?  Let me send my top two generals with no supplies and no help to wander around aimlessly and see if one them trips over it!  Derp!"

They should do a whole episode that took place while the rest of the Thundercats are off in the mine just staring Willy Kitt and Kat and something to do with the Thundertank, like it gets stole or something and they have to get it back because Panthro will crush them between his butt cheeks when he gets back and finds it gone cause he is just that pissed off.

I liked this one a little better on the whole. We get backstory, and some character development on both Panthro and Lion-Os part. I do hate how Panthro is just pissed off tough guy though. The original Panthro was always laughing about something. I remember in the first episode when he caught a mace with bare hands and then just laughed about it. That stuck with me. He thinks this fun...and you don't fuck with a guy like that. This one seems more he is trying to make up form something by being extra pissy. Like he has a small cat dick or something. At least this one wasn't filler though, which is an improvement.

Would you have rather they wasted more time with exposition about the supposed whereabouts of the book?

I like this panthro it makes more sense than some laughing idiot.  This panthro has even less reason to laugh than the old version.  If this version showed up with "HAW HAW HEY EVERBODAH!" attitude it would be a writing flaw.  "OOOH KAAY LION-O LEMME DO SOME SOFT SHOE FOR YA!"  No thanks.

Tail was weird...don't really care.

No, that's not even what I said.  (In fact, the less we hear about the book, the better.)  It's because that's a stupid reason to send out your two best men when hostile enemies (the lizards) still exist.  At least if Claudus had done it because he sensed the ambition in Grune and wanted to humble him by making him do something useful that didn't require him smashing someone's head in, I could see Claudus as doing something smart.  Or if he was short on men and desperate for the book in a time of need, I could how he could only afford to send two and would choose his best guys.  But he's all "hey, I like you guise so I'm not gonna promote you.  That a-hole Lynx-O gets yer job even tho you're better qualified and you two butt-buddies get a wild goose chase.  Here's a party, k bai."  Why the hell wouldn't he just dispatch a couple of clerics or something?  That seemed like the smarter move to me.  He didn't even give Grune and Panthro any men or supplies.  What a dick.

I didn't mind bitchy-Panthro but he seemed too easily impressed.  Lion-O proved he can use the sword so, yes, he's a powerful warrior.  But he just expects immediate obediance and respect and he really showed none to Panthro who, being an experienced warrior who was trusted and loyally served King Claudus, deserved some.  Earlier Lion-O charged right on in and he wasn't the least bit sorry with his "i'm teh king" crap.  I was glad Panthro called him out on that and I just wish they had allowed Lion-O and Panthro to properly earn each other's respect instead of having Panthro all "i luvvvv u, my king" at the end of the episode.

That could be...but since most everyone so far has come across as some kind of cliche of some kind, Panthro falls right in line with them. I mean a big muscle bound, pissed off, tough as nails guy who are some kind of mechanic, are a dime a dozen. You can't seem to make a action adventure movie without one. I half expect to see "And Vin Diesel as Panthro" to appear on the screen.

I mean I'm not against cliches in stories. Sometimes they are best, and easiest ways to get a story across. But so far it has just been a huge crutch for this show. They don't use it to move the story forward...it IS the story and the characters. It is everything. And when the 80's guys seem more developed, and that was in a era of one dimensional characters, then there is a problem. Cheetra still seems immune to this so far, but I'm starting to think that's only cause she has only said like five words in the whole show, and that once we do get to know her she'll just be one as well.

And I also don't like them Power Rangering up the Thundercats. Tygra is now wearing Green, and Panthro Red...what so they won't clash with Lion-O's blue? And of course Cheetra is Yellow, but she always was.

I just expect more from Thundercats, and maybe it will turn into something more. We are early on here, and it can get better once we lay ground work. I remember I didn't really like the rebooted BSG movie that launched that series, but it got a lot better after that so I'm giving this show a chance cause it is still amazing to look at. I wish Voltron looked like this.

Actually, if you google "Panthro", there's an image of Vin Diesel and Panthro side-by-side floating around somewhere like it was part of someone's casting fantasy.  BECAUSE THEY'RE BOTH BALD.  HAR.  Anyway, I think you've hit the nail on the head with this show.  Grune and Panthro, a guy who couldn't even make it for the first episodes, should not be getting more character development at this point than Cheetara and Tygra, who have both been currently reduced to background fodder.

There was a crappy fan trailer that came out a few years ago that digipainted some actors to reflect certain Thundercats...Diesel from Riddick was painted blue for Panthro, Brad Pitt from that Greek movie he did was red like Lion-O, and the Farscape chick was done up in yellow for Cheetara.

It was crappy looking, but hey, it's fan stuff.

Avatar: the Last Airbender and Gargoyles were also kids' cartoons and they actually had decent characterization.  Just because something's a kids' show doesn't mean they have to phone it in.  That's what Spongebob is for.  Then again, I think Spongebob might've told us more about its characters in five episodes than Thundercats did.  Don't be mad at us for calling out cardboard when we see it.

Those are the exception and not the rule for kid show standards.

Avatar with it's big arcs and shit is practically an anime.

I don't remember much about gargoyles, I haven't watched it since new eps were airing on tv.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.

Just because they are not the standard doesn't mean we shouldn't expect more from it. I mean if you like settling for for burgers when you can have steak, then fine. But if I can get steak, I want steak. And I think they are capable of giving me steak and instead are just phoning it in. They gave me steak with animation when they could have just done what Voltron did...or did yet another CGI show, but instead they went above and beyond on that. Why can't they go go above on the writing as well?

I mean I watch the Clone Wars and that is suppose to be a kids show too, but shit they give more story to the characters then the movies did. I actually really like that show. So it is not impossible to make a kids show that appeals to both kids and adults, they are just choosing not too. And we don't even know if it even appeals to kids yet, I've only seen adults talking about it.

I caught an episode of ThunderCats Classic on Teletoon tonight, and it was the best ThunderCats thing I've seen in weeks.

Episode 58: The Mountain
Out of sheer boredom Lion-O climbs a mountain. The mutants decide to attack putting themselves and the ThunderCats in danger.

The plot was superbasic, but it made great use of a limited cast -- Lion-O and Jackalman primarily, with Panthro, Tygra, Slythe, and Monkian as backup -- and it was fucking entertaining.

It makes me want to revisit the old series in its entirety, but I know there's a lot of shit lurking in there.

lol, so how were those asshats Grune and Panthro supposed to get this book again?  Also, I wanted to kick Panthro in the balls when he basically patted himself on the back for drowning.  I wish they had just written the scene to be Panthro being smart enough to believe there could have been another way out instead of just him being a lucky shit.  At least with laughing-Panthro, we knew we were dealing with a flake.  In all, Toe's right on.  This was a much better episode than the past few.  "We were.. just.. tryin' to get my-my sword to work."  Heh.

I hated how they blew the Mumm-Ra transformation by showing an already transformed Mumm-Ra standing around in a flashback at the very beginning of the episode. Brutal.

Other than that, this one was quality.

I was amazed how they got all the way to the Tower of Omens WITHOUT Henry Jones Sr.'s Grail diary.

But on the whole it was better then last couple of episodes. It is movement in the right direction.

"We were.. just.. tryin' to get my-my sword to work."  Heh.

That really did deserve the "Woooooooooooo" part of the laugh track. I mean I think Cheetra would let Lion-O bend her over the Thundertank right now and he is just too dense to see it.

Yeah, I kept yelling at them to have faith and walk off of the cliff towards the waterfall.  Although most of the rest of it reminded me of Tomb Raider levels.

I'm just glad the last two episodes have actually been progressing the storyline and not more filler. Judging by the toys I saw in Walmart yesterday, I guess the next thing is for Mumm-Ra to discover the Sword of Plundarr....

Those spinning blades at the start were straight out of Last Crusade, even with Cheetra having have to slide under the last one. I actually yelled "Kneel before God!" at the TV after that happened.

It's amazing how much they echo the originals. They have the modern articulation, but damn if Tygra doesn't have a non-moving barrel chest like the old figs. You could probably throw him at someone and seriously hurt them.

Yeah, this episode was amazing. Not sure how I feel about the funky armor, but I dug all the spacy shit.

The pessimist in me feels like we're about due for some more sidetracky bullcrap, i.e. the ThunderCats encounter a tribe of beaver people and Lion-O learns the value of carpentry, etc.

Or maybe it's gonna be solid gold from here on out.

Probably more like somewhere in between.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rodent of Unusual Size on Sep 03, 2011, 11:28:21 AM
I'm just trying to figure out the "Mumm-Ra the Space Mummy" angle here.

I reckon that we're overdue for another filler episode showing Lion-O's personal growth. Now if it's Berbils and not beaver people, we might be talking. I'm all for the fan-wank.

But the last line of the episode..."we have to unite the animals," makes me worry. So now, for the foreseeable future, he's going to be going tribe-to-tribe trying to make them impress them with his immature pluckiness enough to get them on-board to fight Mumm-Ra. It depends on how they handle it...it could be epically awesome with a side of fries.

I hope we actually see another Thundercat longer than five seconds in the next one, though.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: IDE on Sep 03, 2011, 12:54:38 PM
I hope that's not it for monstar.  If it is then it is but it would've been cool to see both bad guys together.

They were the exact same voice back in the day weren't they?

I want to see a mumm-ra origin ep that shows what he was before...and it will be HUMAN! That's right were the ultimate evil in the universe!

But then we'll find out that there are still good humans in the universe as well and they will be the silver hawks.

I'm more than a little apprehensive about the tribes thing myself. It makes me think we aren't going to see a proper "mutants" grouping of Slythe, Jackalman, Monkian, and Vultureman, which would be an atrocity.

Granted, the others are all proven in-universe characters. Lion-O's got to level up before he can really do anything of consequence as Team Leader. And it was an interesting episode, despite the groan-worthy "oh, I get it now!" *beats ass*

Despite understanding this, I still worry that there will be many more After School Special episodes to go before we get to the meat of the storyline.

IIRC even the 80s show focused around lion-o getting into deep shit on his own and then summoning the rest of the team of the with the sword.

That doesn't mean the new show has to be that way, too.  Some things need to stay in the eighties and that format's one of them.

This show is a cartoon Boy Meets World with cats.  Will Friedle is just happy not to be second fiddle anymore.

Ha ha, it IS, isn't it?  It does have that feel.

This show is the best cartoon currently airing on TV, aside from the Venture Bros, which doesn't count since its between seasons.

I can't argue that.  Which is probably why by not watching Thundercats, I'm effectively not watching anything right now.  What the hell happened to YJ anyway?  Did that just curl into a ball and die?

I still don't get this pony thing.

I foresee in her next comic incarnation they nix the top altogether and just give her red and black diamond pasties.

Sorry but I'm sticking with the full spandex body suit, nothing beats the classic.

Yeah, I don't get why the formula has changed to do this crap.  Burn through all of your shows, then rerun all of them at least once.  Or burn through half, rerun half, show the other half, rerun the second half.  Meanwhile, sell DVDs for the first half during the second half.  This way means if you have 8 episodes ready, you have at least 16 weeks of programming for a weekly show in that time slot.  13 episodes, 26 weeks of shows.  26 episodes and you should be set for pretty much the entire year before getting to the second season.  There's no problem with prempting for a week here or there for a special event (or doubling episodes for an hour special) because the show just picks back up again.  But they don't do this.  And when the show comes back, they've boned with the time slot and lead-ins.  It's like they're pushing people to piracy.  I'd understand this better if they streamed it for everyone at their website since a move like this would encourage traffic, but episode streaming's just for Comcast peeps from what I know of that.

They did this same exact thing with Young Justice. I was watching it regularly to start with, and while it was underwhelming I planned to stick with it. But then they quit on episode 5 or whatever, and I didn't even know when it came back on. I have no clue where they're at now. And I don't think I really care to catch up with it.

When TC (Thundercats, not Top Cat) returns, will I give a damns?

Also, apparently Mexicans love Top Cat.  I never knew this.  In fact, so much so <a href="

Top Cat is pretty awesome. Between that and refried beans, Mexicans are obviously a people of very discerning tastes.

Earlier youse guys were trying to determine what is currently the best cartoon on television. It's not ThunderCats. It's not MLP. It's not even Adventure Time or Regular Show.

It's Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Guh. I don't want to pass judgement until I've seen the finished product, but that picture Toe posted is a bummer.

However, Alfred with guns is better than Alfred the frumpy, nugget-of-wisdom-dispensing nursemaid that he's been portrayed as in animation for the past 20 years.

It lost me at "CG" and also "younger" "new female sidekick ninja named Katana".

To be fair, Katana is a legitimate DC character, even if she is fucking lame.

You guys watch WB Animation keynote? The guy says they can't make any of their properties as good as the original so they aren't going to even try. They are just going to remake them over and over and hope it works out.

"There is no point in making it as good as it once was.  That ship has sailed."

BWUH.  I don't get what he's trying to say by that.  Of course you don't want to go trying to make the old product all over again.  What's the point of that?  I would say my primary criticisms about new Thundercats have very little to do with the old ones other than I preferred the look of the old Panthro and I love the theme song.  But "good" isn't tied to one look or feel.  It can be a different product with the same characters and still be as good as or in some cases even better than the old one.  It kinda sounds like he's just making excuses with that statement.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Oct 06, 2011, 01:26:46 PM
I'm still watching the keynote thing and he makes some good points but for then backs them up for the wrong reasons.  Like how you can't use an old design for a character because it'll never be as good as the old one under the current budget.  What about just changing the design to differentiate the product?

Then he discusses format (using the Looney Tunes example again) by saying that making new Looney Tunes under the old format (three shorts) encourages the viewer to change the channel.  That could be true, but at the same time I've seen people keep the channel on the old Looney Tunes whenever they came across it simply because the current short airing was only 7 minutes long and they had no commitment to watch the rest.  And while they sometimes changed the channel afterwards, they'd sometimes keep it to see who was starring in the next short and what the next short was about.  Alternatively, if you find the longer show you were watching was dull, you could easily switch to Looney Tunes and wait for the next short.  I believe there is a market for shorts and my main problem with the new Looney Tunes from what I've seen of it is that the stories tend to wear out their welcome by the end of the episode.  The old format worked for not only the old Looney Tunes but many of the WB releases in the 90's as well (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, etc., while still occassionally having longer episodes when the story called for it).

I watched tonight's episode and really liked it. They fleshed out Tygra a bit there and I'm starting to like him better. Not only did Lion-O steal a throne that he thought should have been his, he is also taking away the woman he loves. There was also a lot of action with all the Thundercats and a return of Grune and Mumm-Ra kinda.

Still don't know why I had to sit through three boring ass "Lion-O thinks he knows, but doesn't and learns something" shit episodes to get to this...why don't they just do this? Ah well...I got CN, and I need something to watch around 10:30 on Friday. (I watch it on  CN west since I'm hardly ever home during the showing on East.)

No, it's not.  This show tried to pass itself off as Avatar:TLA meets Thundercats with a dash of Miyazaki and it's not.  It's shallow and that's disappointing because the first two eps promised something more epic that myself and many others really wanted to see.  Yes, you're right about the theme of the entire 80's version but if anyone wanted that, the old series is already out on DVD.  So screw seeing new crap doing that.

I was expecting more from this thing...and in some ways it does show that. The problem is that is padded as hell between those times. So padded that it is hard to sit through that crap to get to the good stuff.

Here we are again with you thinking this show is solely for adults.  This is a reboot, some fatties and basement dwellers will watch it, but mainly it's for the kids.  They aren't banking on selling toys solely to people that resemble the simpsons comic book store owner.  Kids today haven't seen the old one so doing it again with some 80s style is staying true to the formula.  Basically that "anyone who wanted that" equals the kids of today.

And that is why yes it is ridiculous to claim to be a fan of the original and then basically bitch about the show being too much like the original.

Argue past that logic! You've already admitted that was the theme of the 80s show and that's what's going on here!

I WIN!

I WIN THIS INTERNET ARGUMENT!

I did not say this show is solely for adults nor did I think that for a minute.  Avatar:TLA and most Miyazaki shit is for kids.  Gargoyles and the Justice League were kids' shows, too.  Kids can have epic shit and this crap ain't it.  Just admit this show is kinda balls and move on.

Not until you make out with me!

Is the show top tier all it could have been? No.  While that may make it kind of balls for adults.  I think it's still more than adequate for kids.  You'd probably call G1 transformers complete balls now, but to a child it was the greatest thing on television.

I'd actually say it's adequate for kids w/o "more than".  Pretty-looking, passable, similar enough to the source material to not make any waves.  They'll watch it with their friends while eating Cheetos and texting.  And that's it.

And as a child, I never thought of anything as "the greatest thing on television".  In fact, it was a pretty binary system of "like/dislike" until I was about "adult price at the movies".  Just putting that out there.

Come on, Beck. You gotta give this show at least a season or two before you're ready to pass judgment on it.

Yeh jist gots ta!

Grune's impotent threats of violence in this past episode were pretty amusing.

"Grr! You better give me what I want or you're gonna get hurt! Don't believe me? Ooh, just you wait and see! I'ma do it! I'ma do it! For real this time!"

Kinda lost some of his badass villain cred there, I thought.

Transformers comes on Teletoon Retro all the time. I try sitting through an episode every now and then, and man, it is rough. The animation, especially. Dear God, the "animation".

Old ThunderCats eps, on the other hand, are usually pretty entertaining, and generally well-drawn.

Wow...two good episodes in a row. In fact this one was better then the last one. Lion-O and Tygra have it out, Grune and Panthro go at it. Mumm-Ra shows up too. And a half expected Tygra to yell "THIS IS SPARTA!!!" at one point. I won't say when, as to not ruin it, but you'll know it when you see it.

I am a little curious on how exactly they are gonna deal with that. I mean the only one that could make cyber arms or some other way out is Panthro...which he can't do with no arms. And now Tygra is gonna have to drive the Tank I guess.

I am glad that Cheetra picked Tygra. Although if she was always down for him then she shouldn't have lead Lion-O on...and she should have told him sooner before he let the thought of losing her drive him so crazy. She probably could have handled that better.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Nov 29, 2011, 12:42:02 AM
Yeah, I thought that, too.  She was clearly flirting with Lion-O but had already long since decided on Tygra?  She knows they're brothers with visible tensions between them.  Not the type where the other would laugh it off with "I guess I lose this one, bro" and pat the victor on the shoulder.  That's kinda mean.  I guess we can attribute that error to her youth but she did initially seem smarter than that.  I liked that she chose him, too, though.  Sorry, your kingness, you can't have everything.

Seeing how they started off the whole Panthro thing, I picture more arm-less jokes at the poor guy's expense.  I mean, he makes that big heroic sacrifice and in his next scene we have a joke with Snarf and then Lion-O's all "pfft, no one betrayed me, Dumbo" and the other two are making out.  Next ep, Lion-O will be all "Hey Panthro, need a hand there?  OH, sorry."  Like I said, it's pretty horrifying when you think about it.  Shit, both arms amputated.  They have to play with jokes or that it's not a big deal and get it resolved quickly or all the kiddos watching at home will freak out and cry.

Saw this thing on tumbler though and lol'ed:

Yeah can't wait till next episode.

"Alright....Tygra, Cheetra...you take the guards on the left. Panthro...you disarm the ones on the right. Oh...oh, did I say disarm? Sorry."

Course this is a world of magic...So I guess it is possible for Panthro to get his arms back some how.

It's a downhill ride.  You could probably just see no. 6 "Journey to the Tower of Omens" and the last half of this one, no. 13 "Between Brothers" and only be missing about 8% of the story so far.  These elephant characters appear to be sticking around but fuck 'em.  And Lion-O and co. are looking for some stones and fuck those, too.  Almost every other ep has been Lion-O helps ______ (insert some fuckin' animal) and gains _______ (insert an item, character, or lesson) in return.  I guess it's about him helping all of dem animals and bringing teh peace to the world or some shit but it's kinda disappointing in how they (the makers of this show) go about it.

AND STILL NO THEME SONG.  A TRAVESTY.    :nono:

Got caught up last night.  Tygra needs to die.  I really thought they were going to make him a villain and that would have been pretty cool.  Really though Eric Matthews needs to get all Terry McGuinness on that fucker with Ron Stoppable furry.  That guy's a traitorous bitch guilty of Regicide and should be trated as such.

Also when that one kitten saw the frog guy die and whey just showed the gun on the ground I thought he was going to pick it up and get all bad ass... but he didn't.  Still that's some serious shit.  Usually we just see random violence but this show is like "Hey, this kid just saw some fucker get killed, and it's gonna fuck him up, and that's the serious business world of Thundercats!".

Dude losing his arms was so funny.  "I'm all right".   Dude you lost both arms like 2 hours ago.  Let the stupid Narf guy spoon feed you and lie down or something.

Caught the new episode, kinda by accident.

It was pretty good actually. Panthro gets his new arms. Lion-O is not happy about Cheetara/Tygra thing and she makes it all better by telling him he never really had a chance anyway. Yeah! That makes a guy feel great. Monkian and Jackelman show up in the episode as well. They give them names, but I can't remember them. I know one sounded like Atticus, but that just makes me think of To Kill a Mocking Bird. But the one downer of the whole episode is at the end....Thunder-RV. That's all I'll say about that.

It's basically like a huge fucking trailer that makes the Thundertank about four times as big as it is normally. I imagine the toy is quite pricey. Oh, and it's piloted from a Star Trek-esque bridge by a crew of Berbils. Gag.

I hate that Monkian and Jackalman now have even stupider names. I hate their generic voices, which are devoid of any personality and sound absolutely nothing like the originals. I hate that they were enlisted by Mumm-Ra as "generals" but were immediately sent out into battle like fodder only to have their asses kicked.

I hate Panthro's Inspector Gadget arms.

I don't like what's being done with this show. I'm having a hard time finding anything to enjoy about it. I was really looking forward to having the classic team of "mutants" reunite, and now that I've seen their new-school treatment I just want them to go away again.

And I think I kinda blocked out Panthro doing his best Reed Richards impression to beat up the Mutants. I liked Jackelman till he said "At least I have the voices in my head to talk too." that just seemed one step too far and no one that is really crazy ever says anything like that.

I wish I loved it and thought it was one of the best animated things I'd seen in years (like how I feel about Avengers: EMH), but eh. I think I watched most of the original show when I was a kid, but the only two things I really remember is the deus ex machina sword that always won every battle at the end of the show and that Snarf was the most annoying thing on tv (which was quite a feat, considering it was the 80s).

I'll download some eps of the new show to see if it makes a better impression on me

Honestly, I usually fucking hate intros. Shortening/excluding them is one of the best things that's happened to television in a long, long time. I think Lost is to thank, yeah? Of course, there are exceptions, and ThunderCats did seem to be missing something without that theme song. But that's beside the point, kids just didn't give a shit about the toys or the show.

I like my idea! For instance, if Tygra and Cheetara were to knock boots, their kids would be tigers and/or cheetahs, not some horrible sterile hybrids.

I mean, even though there are all these different types of cat people, they have to be able to interbreed, right? And still maintain the various basic cat types? Otherwise after a few generations there wouldn't even be such a thing as a lion or a tiger, you know what I'm saying?

It wouldn't be like human interracial pairings where the heritage becomes increasingly diluted.

Tygra is adopted.  We discussed this about fifty years ago, which is probably about page five or so in this thread.  It was on the CN website for the show that he was an adopted brother.  But the idea of the king and a tigress barmaid does significantly improve the show.

Line up for the T-Cats episodes in April:

Saturday, April 7: "The Trials of Lion-O Pt. 2" -- Lion-O attempts to rescue the other ThunderCats from Mumm-Ra's pyramid.

Saturday, April 14: "Native Son" -- Lion-O and Tygra discover the village of the lost Tiger clan, but what secrets do they hold?

Saturday, April 21: "Survival of the Fittest" -- Wilykit and Wilykat are forced to hunt for their food, but something is hunting them!

Saturday, April 28: "The Pit" -- The Thundercats discover a cat refugee, Pumyra, being forced to fight as a gladiator in a city of Dogs!

Looks like we might find out what exactly Tygra's deal is, and Pumyra might be joining up.

Panthro was clearly in love with Grune...that's why he took it so hard when he betrayed them. I mean they were out in the wilderness all that time...alone....no one else around.

He wrote the final episode of Lost.

Also every episode of Allen Gregory, Terra Nova, and the Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I'm pretty sure they brought him in to spice up the final scene of the Sopranos.

He was a story consultant on Mass Effect 3.

Honestly, the guy's had his thumb in more than a few pies.

As far as I can tell this was his first writing credit.  IMDB has nothing for him for writing, including this episode which just didn't have many details.  It's possible he wrote other episodes of this or another show which similarly has no fleshed out details on imdb...

Saw Native Son...it was pretty good. You do find out where Tygra came from and he is indeed adopted. And man does Tygra have a lot of reasons to hate Lion-O. I don't know how he keeps himself from just stabbing him in the face from moment to moment. There was a predictable story, but it really just was an excuse to give us Tygra back story. Was a little disappointed that Bengali didn't show in this episode.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Apr 16, 2012, 01:06:45 AM
I actually saw this one since it promised hot Lion-o Mom and Tygra backstory.  I loled where Tygra's all "I forgeeve joo, daddy" and that broke the curse, nevermind that Lion-O was the one who had heard the entire backstory and Tygra had no basis for his forgiveness other than sad daddy-eyes staring back at him and loose daddy-hands not strangling him.  I wish we had gotten this story much earlier.  And yeah, bummer about no Bengali.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rama on Apr 16, 2012, 01:33:53 AM
Considering this was suppose to be the lost Tiger clan...and Bengali is a Tiger, they are gonna have to work extra hard to get him in now since they have pretty much said that Tigers are rare. Although glad to see that the Thundercats aren't racist (at least not against other cat species) and that Tygra didn't become King because he wasn't a blood descent of the king and not cause he was a Tiger. If Lion-O hadn't been born, Tygra would have been Lord of the Thundercats.

It is strange...Tygra has gone from my least favorite Thundercat in this show, to my favorite. Which I'm happy about since Tygra was my favorite in the old show too.

...and that Tygra didn't become King because he wasn't a blood descent of the king and not cause he was a Tiger. If Lion-O hadn't been born, Tygra would have been Lord of the Thundercats.

You know, it did not occur to me until reading your post that that was never stated in the show until now.  I had just assumed from the first episode that had been the case: since Tygra was the adopted older brother, that he was passed over due to the king and queen having a biological son.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rama on Apr 16, 2012, 11:56:42 AM
I just remember some people saying that maybe Tygra couldn't be king cause he wasn't a lion. Which wasn't the case since Tygra said he lost everything that was important to him the day Lion-O was born. His mother and his Kingdom. And she even stopped calling him "Prince" when she knew she was preggers.

And you know now that I think about it, I agree with out about Tygra forgiving his dad. If he had been told the story that was told to Lion-O, then I could have seen it. He wasn't though. So he had no reason to not hate his guy. I guess you could say that he was so lonely being the only Tiger in Thundera, that he was willing to overlook just about anything to be with his own kind again. Course if that was the case they could have made it more clear that it was in the episode.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: B E C K on Apr 16, 2012, 11:31:14 PM
The sad thing is if they had just let Tygra be present for the story then it would've been fine.  He would be in disbelief and then go to confront his father while Lion-O--having stayed behind to learn more details of the curse and seeing the sun will set soon--tries in vain to get Tygra to leave with him.  Tygra's father says shit to get Tygra to leave all angry anyway.  Then Tygra and Lion-O leave only to be confronted by assassins and realize the sun was setting.  And the ending stays the same.  This was fixable, darnit.
Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.
Post by: Rama on Apr 17, 2012, 01:07:15 AM
Totally agree. You could even have Tygra refusing to leave, despite Lion-O trying to pull him out of there. Something like "I've finally found out who I am...where I come from...where I belong and you want me to leave it all behind again?" blah, blah....ends the same. I could see it. Don't know why they did it that way.

And you could even have Tygra's dad telling him to take young Bengali with him, as he was born after the curse came down on them or something...it could have been a whole B-story that could have been told to Lion-O by Bengali, while Tygra was off learning the truth. Or his family was away from the clan when it happened and returned with the new born only to be killed by their former clan. Lots of stuff you could have done here, that would have put it over the top.

Title: Re: ThunderCats bowels are loose.

Not Thundercats. None of those Friday night/Saturday Morning toons. And if they run something into the ground it is Ben 10. It is just Thundercats is on Sat morning, and then the only repeat is Sun. morning at the exact same time. So if you didn't get up in time on Sat...you're probably not gonna get up on Sun either.

I just wish they did like they do with Korra and have it on the morning, and then a repeat at night. Avengers use to do that. It was on Sun. morning, but replayed on Wed. night. That was until they just moved it to Sun. night back to back with that terrible Ultimate Spider-Man. Blech!

I'm just fed up in general with all the synergy that goes on in comics these days. Every character is in every other character's book. There's no separation or individuality anymore.

"Well, because these are supposed to be cohesive universes!"

Fuck that. If I want to read a Hulk story, I don't want him running into Wolverine, Reed Richards, or Man-Thing every other issue.

It's pretty much ruined my ability to enjoy anything in the mainstream these days.

If I were forced to prune down my reading to the bare necessities, it would be nothing but Invincible and B.P.R.D./Hellboy.

I do think Ultimate Spider-Man is awful. It is like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (which I liked, and why I'm a Spider-Man fan to this day) and Teen Titans had a bastard child.

The only thing I like is I feel they got Spider-Man/Peter Parker's character right. It feels like Spider-Man, but everything else is shit. I wish this was just a Spider-Man show. No Shield, No Nick Fury, No Power Man, Nova, Iron First and especially White Tiger which for some reason I really loathe. Now I'd like to see a "Heroes For Hire" show with Power-Man and Iron Fist, but I don't want them in a Spider-Man show. Spectacular Spider-Man was great and I was really pissed when they canceled that.

That's probably why they put them on a show with Spider-man so kids will become familiar with them but White Tiger is a really odd choice. It would have made more sense for them push Spider-Woman.

Ha! Can't say I blame you.

The Pumyra episode was pretty good, though.

Saw this at thundercats.ws (http://www.thundercats.ws/news/thundercats-cartoon-news-3/matt-mercer-updates-on-status-of-thundercats-season-2-422/):

At Anime Matsuri, Matthew Mercer, the voice of Tygra on the new Thundercats cartoon, held a panel. In it he candidly discussed where the series stands and how it's doing. Here are some bullet points from the panel, courtesy of LioConvoy at the Thundercats Lair Forums:

• Cartoon Network is supposedly skeptical about doing Season 2
• Season 2 (second 26 episodes) have been ordered, but not yet produced
• Toys were not selling well to kids
• Thundercats moved to Saturdays to draw more kids in to buy the toys and watch the show
• Cartoon ratings have at least doubled since move to Saturday mornings
• He said watching it legally, and buying the merchandise is best way to support the franchise

I wanted to chell out the Pumyra ep and it wasn't terrible.  The show still appears to have this annoying habit of "quickie-resolutions": Pumyra, like Panthro, initially rejected Lion-O and then does a 180 at the end.  It would be better to see them gradually warm up to and respect Lion-O instead of being all "i luv j00, my king" at the closing of the episode.  The initial plot of a disgruntled enslaved Thundercat was actually interesting as was the prospect of freeing teh slaves and Pantho's friendship with what's-his-face dog-face former-slave-guy.  But that racoon-thief subplot was dull-ass.

And Lion-O is still basically a know-it-all, spoiled brat.  He's just not a likable hero at all.  And why didn't he have Cheetara and Tygra with him to free Pumyra?  I mean, I know Panthro wouldn't have gone along with the idea but other two seem to be relatively obedient subjects.

I wouldn't pitch a fit if they did make another season but if this show doesn't get renewed, nothing would be lost really.

I saw half and episode of Thundercats today and I didn't know what the hell was going on.

They were in some kind of sky city full of birds run by Vulture Man. And Pumyra is running around being even more stupid and headstrong then Lion-O...and there was the Feliner and I don't know where they got that. And Panthro is scared of heights....in addition to not being able to swim. Wiley Kit and Kat get hoverboards, and they are after somekind of stone that makes the city float. I was confused. I've missed a lot here.

So after Rama posted in this thread, I re-read it and found this:

Didn't like that Green Latern stuff.  PASS.  The CG's just plain ugly.

When they first showed GL, I thought it looked alright. But it grew on me the wrong way- like a fungus I can't seem to kill.

I'll still watch it, but I won't be too happy about the imagery, I assure you. Have you seen the statue of Atrocitus inspired by the series? Well, don't look at it because it is garbage.

"Yeah, I don't like it, but ahaha, I'll be damned if I don't watch it anyway!"

You are the problem. Instead, be the solution.

Don't support shit.

I don't have one. In fact, I'll be watching that shit on an illegitimate stream on the Internet. It's Green Lantern, I'm going to watch. I may stop shortly after stopping, but I'll at least give it a chance.

LOLOLOLOL, I'm totally in love with GLTAS series now.  Thundercats had nothing on it.  NOTHING.  Come back, GLTAS!
COME BACK!!!
