Apparently bad luck follows me in spades. Either that or God's telling me to get the hell out of my job.
Last night one of the other drivers had one last run which was acually supposed to be my delivery, but I told her to take it instead. Either she came back or didn't take it at all because it seemed too suspicious. So my manager tells me to jump into a coworker's van and I'd be his backup in case something happened.
The instant we got there I thought something was very suspicious. The people were acting wierd. I stayed in the van hidden. I watched the driver disappear behind a truck with the food, and then a minute later return and start walking back towards the van.
I thought everything was cool until I saw the three black guys who had ordered the food come running up behind him and try to grab him. He shook them off and ran for the van and was able to get into the van while fighting them off and drive away, all while I was on the phone with police.
I told the assistant manager I hated working the job and he told me to leave, and I told him "fine, see you later asshole."
I'm sick of hearing about delivery robberies every single damn week and all of them by young black men under 30.
And yes, I have been looking for a job, just not very hard. I've had three places tell me they weren't hiring and actually were cutting back hours for their employees.

Well, I was re-hired for all of one delivery run. The head manager and district manager was willing to let me keep on working for a while at least, and I would work until I found new employment. But it seems the head honcho himself, the head of the entire company (and all of it's 20 or so stores), says he wants to talk to the DM and store manager to discuss whether I'll be re-hired or not. Odd that the owner of the company would trouble himself with such a situation but I think I kinda know why. I think a part of it may be that car accident I had a while back, but I think there's other factors involved as well.
Department of Labor Chief, how much progress have you made in the procurement of new employment?
DOL: Well D, we have one man who said he's looking for some new employees and will be conducting interviews next week. I'll be meeting with him tomorrow to secure an application, as he had none today.
D:
Excellent. Department of War, have you captured the mugging suspects?
DOW: No, but we have the bastards on the run, it won't be too long before we have them strung up by their testicles.
D: Excellent. All right men, you know what you have to do. I want us to meet tomorrow at the same time for an update.

Edit: I wish I had a camera phone or digital camera with me. I would have been able to film the mugging and our hasty getaway all while I'm yelling "fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck" and then put it on youtube.

When I was in college, the local pizza places quit delivering to certain dorms when delivery guys kept getting Clorox and piss poured on them when they walked up. So it baffles me that this is such a problem for the asshats you work for to comprehend and do something about.
Then again, maybe they see you as expendable.

I just checked local news to see if I was in the news or not, and found out a driver from another store from the same company was shot to death during a robbery. Apparently I left at the right time.
Edit:
Just read in the newspaper, two of the guys were caught! Turns out the dumbasses used their own cell phone number to place the call. The cops traced it and arrested them.
Which makes me wonder why they didn't do the same thing with my other case, since I had the robber's number on my cell phone.

Some pizza places here simply won't deliver to the high crime areas. I can't imagine your place makes any kind of profit if they keep getting robbled like this.

Man. I hate to say this, but I have to agree with D on one thing.

E: I, and dozens and dozens of studies, talkshows, etc., do note that there's a bevy of underlying issues in the black community with jail time, unwed pregnancy, poverty, education, etc. Hell, Latinos (since it's relevant to me and the city I live in) share many of the same problems. I doubt anybody here disagrees that there are issues and unfortunate stereotypes that prove themselves repeatedly. D does not need to run this home over and over again. All he talks about is getting robbed by black people (or harassed by Christians) and then he lathers, rinses, and repeats. It's like watching someone bang their head in a wall every week and cry about it. Enough, already.

And the connection they found was that high crime followed Section 8 housing out of the city and into the suburbs... wherever there's cheap and subsidized housing, there's lots of crime.
Of course, I didn't need a magazine to tell me that. All the messed up neighborhoods in this suburban area is in townhouses and neighborhoods that either have low rent or accept Section 8 vouchers.

I am in a tough spot now..
I'm not going to have enough money to survive more than a month or two, so I'm hoping I can either get on unemployment or food stamps or both.
I COULD try to get the job back, but I don't even want to go back. I read about delivery guys being mugged and beaten and put in the hospital for a week for their money and I could be the next one beaten up. Screw that.
The job market is shit. It may take forever to find another job with the economy as crappy as it is, and the auto industry laying off everyone because it still focuses on SUVs and trucks even though the SUV market is rapidly shrinking, while the small car market is exploding at a supersonic rate, so if the big 3 had any brains at all they would shift their workers around to make more small cars.
And a stimulus chell would be nice right now but apparently people have said I don't get one because I don't make enough. Wait a sec... while I worked I made minimum wage... $7.50, and about $1200 a month. Now I'm unemployed. I don't make ENOUGH? What, do I have to make $50,000+ a year to get a fucking chell? I'm POOR, I should automatically get money from the government. I was the backbone of the nation, without me the fat rich fucks that run the country wouldn't get their pizza in 30 minutes. I better get a chell or It'll give me proof that Bush is evil and is only giving checks out to his buddies in the upper middle class and rich. Once again the rich rule the world and make the poor suffer.

Four points:
1) If they could make enough of the cars that are in demand, they would, but changing everything over to producing more smaller cars can not and will not happen overnight. It's why there's a nationwide shortage of new and used economical vehicles these days.
2) $7.50 is not minimum wage.
3) You don't get much back because you don't put much in.
4) Rich people don't order pizza.

You're kidding, right? I got paid $7 an hour last year until I moved and lost my job, got all the income tax that got taken from my chell back, and got the entire $300 for my stimulus chell. Is Michigan crappier than Kansas in the eyes of the government? oO

Dunno if I mentioned this, but I missed the stimulus check by, like, 150 bucks. I make a little more than Doug does per hour, worked less than ten hours a week during the spring and fall, and a few days a summer. I understand taking it easy and all if you're a student but for all of his money woes, someone didn't work enough.

For independent people who don't make much/any, getting a Pell grant should be no problem, and you should chell into a WIA grant from the employment service (if they offer it in your state...dunno how shitty your state is, but MS does). Barring those, do like lots of others do: take a loan.

You know, the city of Flint (Just north of Detroit, hometown of Michael Moore, setting of Rodger & Me, and a very very poor and ghetto town) has a new law forbidding people from sagging their pants past their butts.

I was denied unemployment because I didn't make enough gross wages in a quarter. I made $2500 and they expect at least $2700 a quarter.
I'm surprised they'd have a "minimum" amount earned. Shouldn't that be a maximum? You make more than $100,000 a year, you don't get any fucking unemployment. You run out of money, you can always sell your Audi.

Umemployment comes from a limited source and therefore must be used to help people who rely on a specific level of income to live on. If they helped everyone who made a maximum of 2700, then every lazy-ass in Michigan could go trying to claim government bread. They probably figure that if you were so desperate for money, if you were relying on money for food and shelter, you would've been working more. If you aren't working that many hours, if it wasn't even full-time, the government would rather help people who have kids, house payments, etc. to pay for than your "200+ hours on Final Fantasy" ass. You aren't a minimum wage slave. I know minimum wage slaves. They have no time for anime and little girls. They work, work, work their fingers to the bone. They have two to three jobs. (And usually that many kids but that's another thread...)

You must have missed the part where I said I lived alone in my own apartment, paid my own rent, and bought my own groceries and food. I was able to (barely) survive on my income. For some people, $2500 every three months is enough to live off of by themselves. I worked as many hours as my boss could give me, and some times he didn't give me that many. Some weeks I'd work 2 days, some weeks I'd work 6-7 days, 7-10 hours a day. On average it was about 30-35 hours a week, which I would say sounds pretty close to full time.
In any case I need the unemployment to pay for food and rent, or I'll end up homeless and starving. The issue is that they hadn't taken into account the last couple months I worked because the manager hadn't reported wages for the last quarter, and when I calculated my paychecks I found out I actually had made enough to earn unemployment. They also didn't take into account the tips I earned.

Food service. Or if there are local festivals, look them up and apply to be whatever kind of grunt they need. Sharp people who go beyond what's minimally required get noticed by the sponsors and vendors of such events simply because most applicants are just looking for beer/gas money.

No, I didn't. You didn't work enough. You told us in another thread how much you made and that you didn't qualify for the stimulus money. I made below the stimulus cut-off amount and I know barely worked. I have a pretty good idea how many hours that is. 2 days a week isn't full time. If you need money to feed yourself, why the hell would you sit back and go "oh, only worked 2 days. oh well." If I needed fucking rent money and my boss "could only give me" two days, then I'm getting my ass a second or third job.

I'm not about to argue about this forever, but I want to make one thing clear, and that's the fact that I did work a lot with my previous job.
I mean, I was gone from this board for about 3 months or so without a single post.
I never worked 2 day work weeks. The least amount of days I worked was 3, and that was rare. Most of the time I worked at least 4 days a week. During the busiest time at work, during the winter, I was working 6 day weeks. A few weeks I had to work all 7 days in the week. The week I was mugged I was scheduled for all 7 days (only worked 4 of them), and the week before I had worked 6 days. And these weren't 3-4 hour shifts either. I'd be there at 5pm sharp and work until after close. Every work shift would be at least 7 hours and be up to 11 hours, with the exception of the few times I would be let go early because we were slow. During the winter, it was not unusual to do 40 deliveries a night (that doesn't sound much until you realize that 20 is average for a pizza driver), and even during the summer, because we were short staffed (hence the 6 day work week), I was making 25-30 deliveries a night. I never ever worked a 2 day work week while at that company unless I had car trouble.
The reason I was denied unemployment was due to error on my employers part, he wasn't reporting his wages properly and it made it look like I was earning less than I was. One busy month I was paid in cash rather than with pay checks, so those wages weren't reported. My YTD amount was reset to zero back in early March which makes it look like I earned less. The money they gave to me every night for mileage and gas was unreported to taxes and unemployment, and my tips were unreported as well.
I went through every single pay stub I had and added them up by hand one at a time and found out that I did make over the minimum amount to get unemployment, so I have sent copies of the paystubs to unemployment and appealed their decision. I should get their response next week, although they may think of some other bizzare reason to deny me.
Also, unemployment does not come from taxes. The money for unemployment comes directly from the employers from a government business tax that employers are required to pay. So it would be my previous job paying my unemployment checks, which I think is just revenge and better than prank phone calls. (No, I will not give you guys the phone number, you'd have to know local streets in order to prank them anyway).

My first day working, the first person I checked out was this girl I could tell was a freshmen. She looked 18, was cute as all fuck, and was wearing a tight t-shirt and short-shorts so tiny and sexy it gave her serious cameltoe. God damn I saw her body in my mind's eye the whole rest of the day, even after another hottie, this one looking Indian, came to my register.

Reading that article reminded me of that wonderful magic turtle place in FF7 that I never got to go to because I didn't do the things that led up to getting there. And unlike that game there is no chance I will ever get to go to this place because there is no reset button on life.
