Last week the dean of the language department emails me to let me know I'm in the Jap class.
The teacher's name is Yukari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukari_Tanizaki), and I have no idea why I was expecting it to be a man since Yukari's a female name, and it's really a hot 20-30ish female! (probably more like 40 considering the Japanese age really slowly.) She insists we call her Sensei.
I got it bad, got it bad, got it bad... I'm hot for teacher!
The thing that really scares me about the class is not learning to say the words, but learning to write/read the language. The sylabus says we will learn to write in hiragana and katakana AND (nooooo!!!) kanji. Not the kanji!
When she has us learn new phrases, she says them way too fast. I would perfer she say them slowly and a sylable at a time, so I can more easily pick up on it. so instead of ko-ni-chi-wa Yu-kar-i - sen-sei, she says it fast like konichiwayukarisensei. @_@
Also, she romanizes the words incorrectly, like arigatoo and ohayoo. Perhaps she does it on purpose to help us.
I already know that one of the other students is an anime fan.. the stickers, patches, and pins of Inuyasha and Naruto characters on her backpack clued me in. And she's good looking too. :3
Yukari-sensei, ohayo gozaimasu. Hajime Mashite. Watachi wa Doug desu (NEEDS MORE DESU!). Doozo yoroshiku. Nuri-san, ogenki desu ka? Wakari masu ka?

watch out chiyo!

I haven't noticed any precocious child prodigies around here yet. They better consider themselves lucky.

Wakari masu ka?

Rampy can touch the rest.

I just met our teaching assistant:
Oh shi-, this isn't a good sign.
Yesterday, I could only see the back of the girl with the anime-covered backpack. Today I got to see her from the front. I was right, she's fucking hot. I mean as in "IDE would pick her first out of the entire room" fucking hot. Yowza! And she's at MY school. Sorry IDE, no hot anime-loving chick for you.
But I have no oppertunity to sit next to her yet... I have to get there early next time. But I bet she's taken... it always happens that way.
Toughest thing so far is memorization of words and phrases as well as knowing how to prounounce them right. We've already started to learn hiragana vowels.
The other class I'm taking is a robotics class which seems really really really fun. The laid back teacher even said "We're here to play with toys". We'll build autonomous robots that will be able to avoid objects, follow lines, navigate mazes, and do tasks like grab objects and move them to different areas.
-
Sorry IDE, no hot anime-loving chick for you.
I never get the opportunity to bag that girl...
-
Watachi wa Doug desu (NEEDS MORE DESU!).
It's "watashi," but I bet you just made a typo.
In my first Japanese class, the teacher romanized the stuff similarly, with the "arigatoo" and "ohayoo." I don't know why this would be helpful, really, since there are words that actually have an "u" sound in them and some that have "o." Like, ありがとう would really be "arigatou," while とおい would be "tooi" (it's an i-adjective meaning "far/distant").
Oh well, but you'll be ditching the romaji before too long, I guess, so uh... you won't have to deal with funky romanizations forever, I guess.
-
I'm glad my teacher never did that. What an ass-pain.
-
Gah!!!!!
This class is chapping my ass, I swear.
I missed class yesterday because of this blasted cold. Last week we had learned the base vowel hiragana (a,i,u,e,o) and the k hiragana (ka,ki,ku,ke,ko). So I assumed we'd learn 5-10 hiragana a week. Seems reasonable.
When I come into class, the sensei had us do a quiz on 10 more hiragana (the s and t ones) which the class had learned on monday, and then had us learn 10 more hiragana today (the h and n ones), and tomorrow we'll learn 10 more.
Whoa whoa whoa, slow down psychobitch! I cannot fucking learn 10 hiragana a day! Not only do I have to memorize the sounds but also how to properly write and read each fucking letter. It's impossible to learn at that speed when you're learning an entirely new language from the ground up.
What's worse is that all the local bookstores do not have the books available (all sold out), so I'm screwed as I don't have the workbooks.
And my financial aid has yet to come in. I filed it at the beginning of August and they showed me I had been awarded $12k for the year, but they can't give it to me until every scrap of paperwork has been approved. I heard someone who filed their financial aid in May hasn't gotten their money either, so I assume I'll get mine in the middle of December.
And the school has sent me a bill. I'll send it to the financial aid office to tell them to get off their lazy asses. So right now, I have enough money to either pay rent, or pay for books. Hard choice. :/
-
You can't go that slow with hiragana, then it'll take forever to get to words and phrases. Nobody in their right mind would waste a month of a semester on hiragana. Plus you need the katakana. Dude, just go online and find some flash cards or something.
-
weeaboo?

Incorrect. In my class we learned the whole hiragana syllabary in a week. Katakana the next week. That's pretty basic stuff, dude. And you have to memorize the sounds? Oh no, a consonant followed by the same damn 5 vowel sounds! Really tough.
Sounds like the teacher's moving along at a pretty reasonable pace.
-
Yeah, so シャート ダ ファーク ウップ。 Or something.

That's a paddlin.

Here you go, D

And you'd better respond to this in some way instead of not saying anything when I uploaded the Ichigo Go Go song for you.
This one is also quite helpful for learning the vocabulary:

Here are some helpful phrases for Doug:
おげんきですか、ビtチュ?
フェダロルパリシオンからきました!
こどもたちだいすき!

That's a paddlin.
Was he staring at the professor's shoes again?

Funny, you claim you don't have time to study and yet you find time to post here and lord knows where else.
Get your priorities straight and quit your bitching!
-

I'm having trouble memorizing the letters, not the sounds.
The hardest part right now isn't having time to study, it's having the study material to study. Besides the online stuff, I cannot afford the books I need for this class, and I cannot afford extra study material.
Financial aid needs to give me my fucking money.

That's par for the course. :poo:

Maybe there is a copy on reserve at the library. If not then ask a classmate if you can xerox the pages you need.
-
Yeah, and even then I'd imagine he'd only need it if he had assignments from the book. Rampy gave him perfectly good sources to use for learning it.
-
According to another student there's supposed to be some kind of game on that Genki site where you match the hiragana with the sound, but I can't find it.
The Genki are actually the workbooks the class uses.
Just paid rent, and now have $40 in bank. :(
I have the vowels and k-sounds down.

I can't believe this. There's two teachers in our class and I didn't notice it. I thought there was something different about the teacher near the end of the week. It wasn't until Fri that I found out there's two Japanese teachers that run the class. There's our main teacher who teaches the first three days, and then a teaching assistant the other two days. And they're both Japanese, with long black hair, and the same height, and it's confusing. It's true, all asians look the same! :keelover:
Today our teacher wanted us to go to this bbq run by the school's japanese association, and I was expecting 90% of the people there to be japanese. But about half of the students were american, probably students taking language classes or with a japanese culture major. The otaku girl from my class was there, and although she recognized me (BONUS!), she instantly became friends with three japanese girls and she talked their ears off all day, so I had no chance to get close to her.
Also, all the female japanese students are HOT! Proof that all japanese girls are fucking hot as hell.
But I did make some friends. I was talking to two girls, one somewhat attractive, about their Bleach bag they had, and my mother had to call and tell me she wanted to head over to her house to do something for her. COCKBLOCKED!! By my own mother! :keelover: And just when I was starting to make friends with them.
I hope they have more BBQs. :D I need to make some more friends there. ^_^

Next time mom calls try and end those types of conversations with something like:
You: I gotta go. What are you doing this weekend we should hang out
Her: Yeah
You: Gimme your number
-
Two different people and D didn't notice. I'm completely unsurprised by this. It probably happens more often than he realizes.
-
Fuckin racist
-
Next time mom calls try and end those types of conversations with something like:

Her: Yeah
You: Gimme your number
That's too obvious. And "Gimme your number" sounds kinda demanding. You really need to be more subutle in such situations.
I was actually planning on chatting them up on Japanese stuff, then asking if they wanted to be study partners with me. Then I'd ask them "your place or mine?"
-
If you want this girl in bed, shut up and listen to IDE.
-
Seriously.
-
If you want this girl in bed, shut up and listen to IDE.
Isn't that what got him in trouble in the first place? LOL!
-
I thought what got him in trouble in the first place was touchin' little girls.
-
They don't age slowly, you ducking fumbass.
-

le sigh...
You want it to be obvious that you like them. And you should be a little demanding in a non chalant manner. "Gimme your number" is simple and it works. You can use your japanese stuff as an in and even play the study card. But I wouldn't do that "your place or mine" line in person. That's like a level 5 spell that has to be uttered with just the right intonation or else it's gonna blow up in your face for 5d6 damage.
-
Yeah, and if you're an elf, we can't raise you. You're screwed.
-
From the looks of the situation, it's probably for the best he can't be raised.
-
Shut up.
That's disgusting.
-
All you guys should get in a circle and raise each other.
-
last one raised has to eat the cracker
-
Next time mom calls try and not end those types of conversations with something like:
You: I gotta go. Mother beckons me to her over-sucked teat. I get to shave her legs today! What are you doing this weekend, we should hang out. But not Saturday. That's Bingo with Mother!
Her: Yeah
You: How about them Japanese and their psuedo-non-military? Do you like Pocky? The razor I shave Mother's legs with was made in Japan. We should study together. Especially since I don't have a book. Because I'm poor. I can use yours. You don't mind, right? In fact, just leave the book with me now. I have some cold pizza in my car, want some? The black guy tips lousy so I stiffed him.
Her: Um.
Mom: NOOOORMAN!
You: Gotta go. *runs*
-
Hahahaha! That is hilarious!

Reposted here because it fits better:
ばか (baka)
ダグラス (Dagurasu)
くろかわ (kurokawa)
こんばんわ。(konbanwa - good evening)
はじめましてみんな。(hajimemashite minna? - how is everyone?)
わたしわダグラスです。(watashiwa dagurasu desu - I am douglas)
(someone else says it's 私はドーグラスです。, but there's apparently kanji in the sentence and I don't know kanji yet so fuck it.).
十五歳です。(25さい)(juu go sai - I am 25 years old.)
(25)
どうぞよろしくおねがいします。(douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu. - pleased to meet you.)
おげんきですか。(ogenki desu ka - how are you?)
(same person claims it's お元気ですか。, but yet again the person uses kanji when I don't know it yet. Kanji may be the way the japanese technically do it but I can still do it in Hiragana as well, I doubt some Jap will slice off my balls for using all kana.)
-
last one raised has to eat the cracker
You are a cracker.
-
They're two kanji. Don't be such a lazy bastid.
-
Eat me!
-
That depends on what kind of cracker you are. :joe:
-
Saltine. He isn't nearly subtle enough to be a Ritz.

こんばんは, you mean.
わたしわダグラスです。(watashiwa dagurasu desu - I am douglas)
わたしは、you mean.
十五歳です。(15さい)(juu go sai - I am 15 years old.)
Fixed ;)
(it's 二十五歳 or にじゅうごさい for 25 years old)
Oh and おげんきですか should probably be translated to "Are you well/healthy?"
I think いかがですか means "How are you?"
-
This thread has entirely too much Japanese and not enough boobs.
IDE and D don't count.
-
Why would there be boobs in the Japanese class thread?
-
I'll probably debate TM2 when I actually have my Genki textbook with me.
Or maybe I can just look online. :P
Ok, I'm curious to why you end the konbanwa with the ha (は)symbol and not the wa (わ)symbol?
Well, the "how are you" bit I got from a handout from the teacher.
ikaga desu ka I've never heard of.
-
I never heard "ikaga desu ka" in any of my Japanese classes, either.
But, I've heard a Japanese acquaintance use it. Also, I've heard a Japanese seiyuu use it, as well as an employee at a Japanese grocery store.
Btw here's an online dictionary http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1C
"Genki," a "-na adjective," means like... "health(y); robust; vigor; vigour; energy; vitality; vim; stamina; spirit; courage; pep;" according to that online dictionary. If someone asks you "Genki desu ka" you can reply with a "hai" or an "iie." You can say something like "Hai, genki desu" or "Iie, genki ja arimasen" or "Iie, genki ja nai desu." I guess your teacher kinda simplified the translation a bit...
But "ikaga desu ka" is not a yes or no question, fyi.
Konbanwa and konnichiwa end with the "ha" symbol because they're some of Japanese's odd quirks. It's similar (or exactly the same as) "Watashi wa Rampage desu" using the "ha" symbol, but being pronounced "wa." :joe:
-
I'll probably debate TM2 when I actually have my Genki textbook with me.

You are a crazy mother fucker D.
I hope the rest of your life sucks.

I concur. And how many threads have to turn to the subject of trying to get D laid?
-
Hey it's better than when every thread turned to the subject of D molesting little girls amirite?
-

I feel like calling the police on him but I have no information to give them and he hasn't committed any actual crime.
-
Too bad he isn't black. Then the lack of an actual crime wouldn't matter.
-
I concur. And how many threads have to turn to the subject of trying to get D laid?
But he needs to get laid desu!
-
I had to get rid of the class, sadly enough.
Two reasons. First off I was too far behind. Every test and quiz you had to have a fluent knowledge in not only Hiragana and Katakana, but some knowhow in how the Japanese language worked. And I was just too confused with half of it.
Second, I had missed too many tests, quizzes, and classes. The pizza job had me working 40-50 hours a week, and me going to bed at 3-4am. And with the class in the morning, even with an alarm going off, i'd still sleep in and miss the class. Once I forgot to set my alarm and woke up at 2pm.
And getting to know the girls in the class wasn't going well, since there's not much conversation with other students during class. And the girl I wanted to be friends with seemed more interested in making friends with other girls, and the boy next to her with the emo haircut, than me.
My robotics teacher says I'm missing too many classes too, but I've been to every single class. This both amuses and annoys me because he rarely takes attendance, so how does he know what classes I have or have not been to? In fact, the day he told me I needed to come to every class, he didn't take attendance. And halfway in the class I asked him "Are you going to pass around an attendance sheet?" And he said "Should I? All right, grab a blank sheet of paper and pass it around."
-
Quit missing class! :fingershake:
-
If you'd been lifting and tanning this whole time you'd have beaten the crap out of that angry asian and curb stomped that uppity black guy. Your confidence level would be at an all time high from boning hoop earing chick from work. The anime chick quest would have gone from red to green by now.

Agreed. Plus, you can meet chicks working out. It's a fact. Just exercise and wait, don't hit on them. Women at the gym don't wanna be hit on, but if she's lookin and sees you, she'll bite.
-
Wish MY weightlifting class had more chicks in it.

The girl at work with the earrings now works the exact opposite shift I do.. she's mornings and I'm evenings. So I always miss her. :(
The only other woman there looks like a clone of Anna Nicole Smith, so no.
