God Dammit!
« on: Sep 09, 2004, 03:32:52 PM »
Our beautifully awesome ATV got stolen today. My dad was a dumbass and left the thing on the trailer in the driveway even after he went and retrieved the key to the disc brake lock (long story), and so the trailer has been in the driveway for a month or so having people walk past it, able to plan to take the damn thing. There's a pretty much impossible to cut ball lock on the part where you hitch it to the back of a car, but that can be remedied with duct tape  and tie-down cords.

Apparently, there've been people stealing trailers in this general area of town for a while, but if they were going for a trailer, we have a new one without a broken tail light right beside our house.

When my dad found out, he drove around the neighborhood with a handgun with the magazine filled with some pretty hurtful stuff. It was scary, but he put his gun away after a while and went back to work.

How can you steal an ATV without making a ton of noise?

It was already on the trailer. No starting of the ATV neccesary. They could have planned to steal it in advance and had it gone in minutes.

Was it insured through Progressive by any chance?  They'll run out and write you a chell the same day.

Reminds me of what a friend's dad did - he came home from work the day after Xmas to find that Dad has put the boxes from the new home theatre system & V-cam over the roses in the front yard to protect them from the predicted freeze and asked Dad why he didn't just stick a sign out saying "Burglars Stop Here".    :P

Progressive insures boats, campers, trailers, motorcycles & ATVs as well as cars, for next time.    Rates vary between states, but I'm looking right now at a policy I wrote on a 97 Kawasaki Mule & 2001 Honda TRX for $500,000 liability, Collision & Other Than Collision damages (like theft!) with $250 deductibles and the total premium is $202 a year.

Since the trailer was in your driveway, if you have homeowners or renter's insurance, it should be covered.  Unfortunately, anything under the category of "motor vehicle" is not unless you can convince the adjuster that it was used to assist the handicapped, or service the residence (example: riding mower).

Then again, you might get an adjuster fresh out of a crash training course whose supervisor is in Florida on stormtrooper duty who won't know this.  Wouldn't be the first time.

It's been stolen before, and our insurance didn't cover it. When we got it back, it was pretty much torn up and we had to spend lots to fix it. This time, my dad had a lock on the disc brake and it was in need of repairs, so we might end up getting it back in seperate pieces or something this time. We still have our minibike, though everyone here is too tall to ride it. The only place we ever rode the ATV was at my grandparents' property, and everyone else brings theirs, too, so at least we can still ride something.

It was found at a dealer on the other end of town. Some dealer, that'll accept a bike with the ignition torn apart so it'll start without a key and shot brakes.

When you said that, it reminded me of when we had gotten burglarized years ago (back in the 80's) and we recovered our tv.  My dad said the police recovered it.  For starters, that was a pretty timely recovery.  Secondly, my mom always has this lingering aura of suspicion to this very day that my dad himself was involved in the actual crime.  She told me this year (this is the first time she's mentioned it) that my dad was acting strangely that night and wanted to chell up on our house or something to that effect.  So now I wonder about it.

Yeah so anyway, that's what that reminded me of.  :lol:;;

That's a weird way to pawn a TV, by smashing your own window in, messing up the house and not taking the perfectly working VCR that was in the same room with the binoculors that you did steal.  A quick pawn's not what I think it was.  Then again, Ray... is a weird man.

It's one of my favorite stories to tell, the Infamous Christmas Eve Burglary.  I think if I ever buy a kid at Wal-mart, I'll tell him something inside Santa snapped and things went horribly wrong.

That reminds me of a story I heard of some guy in my town ramming his truck into the side of Wal-mart on Christmas Eve night because they were closed.

Jesus, it's his own fault for waiting that long.
The wife forgave the mistress for she only entertained.

If you wait that long it's time to just skip the presents and get to all the food and the love and togetherness bs.  And the church part.
