Samurai Rabbit is coming.
« on: Mar 27, 2022, 10:53:43 PM »
And I don't know if I'm actually excited or not.

Wait, it's not that one.

Oops, that's not it, either.

It's this lame looking thing:

I like Usagi so I'm giving it a shot since it'll be on Netflix and all anyway.  But, damn, I wish they had just adapted the comic we already have.  And if not that, then making an original version of Space Usagi was the 2nd obvious choice.  But we get neither.  I wonder if it was Sakai just not wanting his stuff directly meddled with.  You know, in case he does more Space Usagi in the future or something.  Meh.

I'm laughing but not for the right reasons.

Bland shamisen music to indicate Asian environment?  Check.
Forced team building in the trailer?  Check.
Quirky "Marvel-esque" jokes?  Check.

The yokai being released was the most interesting thing about the trailer along with the firebird (pyrotechnics peacock?) or whatever that was.  Everything else was no bueno.  The main character's voice was kinda annoying, too.  So was Kitsune's but the main character having an annoying voice is the far greater sin imo.

Oh, no, this is so cringe.  :lmao:

The visuals switching over to this guy's daydreaming or whatever was cute at first and then it quickly got old.  I think it's when he got mega-ripped all of the sudden.  Like the fuck...  I wanted to give this a try (even if it was just for laughs) but I don't think I can sit through this much cringe.

Default visuals are just ew. That city's streets being so wide and empty (of both vehicles AND people) completely throws me out of the setting.  The city looks great from a distance but it's all empty inside.  Why bother with the "it's a big, shiny city" setting if you can't visually pull it off?  They should've just ripped off the idea of Usagi bouncing from town to town like he normally does.  So many Usagi stories are "Usagi's in a forest and comes upon cabin/house and shit goes down." That would've been so much easier to animate, I'd think.

This is bullshit. Usagi Yojimbo is not a twink.

Fuck this. Imagine if they had taken Sakai's actual fucking designs and aesthetic and translated it all into CG?

Oh, but that would have been too much work, I'm sure.

Lazy garbage.

I'm out of touch with the kids.  Would the kids like this?  I just have a feeling even kids wouldn't like this.  I could think of a dozen ways to kiddify (is that a word) Usagi Yojimbo but that isn't this.  I think it makes it worse that the source material is completely accessible for families already.  Even with all the death and whatever.  I'm curious about the other characters so I gonna peek through some of the episodes to see if it's 100% or 75% cringe.  But not holding my breath.

It's too bad that Arcane only came out late last year.  If it had come out before this thing got greenlit, I think the chances would've been greater that maybe someone producing this would've gone for something a little more, uh, loyal to the brand.

Okay, I watched the first episode. It's not irredeemably heinous.

I still would have preferred an authentic adaptation over this Usagi: The Next Generation nonsense, though.

I actually skipped ahead to later episodes because I wanted to see the other characters and how they play off of one another. I honestly don't know who the audience is for this show.  The "jokes" are trite. The "action scenes" are slow and stilted, like these characters are moving around underwater. Any moment of drama or levity becomes the set up for a joke or gag like some shitty Marvel-esque knock-off.

In the first episode I skipped to, the cat betrays everybody and not!Usagi is all "SAY WHAAAAA" like it's the punchline to a joke. Two seconds later, the cat unbetrays everybody.  The rhino is grumpy about it but the fox apparently felt super betrayed because I guess she thought she and the cat were bosom buddies. Meanwhile, not!Usagi just gives no fucks at all. He has no investment in anybody's feelings. At one point, the rhino is actually animated with genuine emotion on this face as he tells Usagi that the fox's feelings were really hurt (by the cat's betrayal). And Usagi's all "you should help me find yokai" and just changes the subject. Is Usagi supposed to be autistic or have ADHD? They should've just openly written him that way.

But none of it matters anyway because the cat and the fox don't make up in this episode, yet we see them again in beginning of the next episode and they made up. Rhino and Usagi don't give a shit that she betrayed anybody. Why have the cat betray them to begin with?  Nothing was done with it.

I do actually like the cat.  The cat is probably the one good character in this shit salad.  Usagi is so obnoxious. His facial expressions border on uncanny valley territory. All he talks about is being a true samurai over and over again but he certainly doesn't try to even act the part or apply any sort of philosophy to his life. His "training" is slicing a grain of rice in half and he's all "I'm done now amiright." He's too stupid to function. I hate him.

Stan Sakai actually made an Usagi relative in the comic named Yukichi Yamamoto who I thought was supposed to be a tie-in to this show. You know, to get us used to what's basically a younger Usagi. Google him and he basically looks like he would be the character from this show. Yukichi's actually a decent character. So I figured this dude from the show would be like Yukichi and he's totally, totally not. (Looking back at an old article, the main character's name in this show was supposed to be Yuichi but I guess one of the producers stomped their feet and demanded to use the Usagi name instead.)

I have a feeling the closest we'll come to a true Usagi show will be over Stan Sakai's dead body. I hate to say it like that but this comic's his baby. He apparently holds all of the rights to it and no major studio will ever make an Usagi show without a cut of those rights. Stan's been in the industry long enough that he probably knows he can get fucked over. He really needs to crowdfund a series himself and throw it up on YouTube or something. I'd give money to back a proper Usagi series.

EDIT: I skipped to the end and OMG.  The cat thinks Usagi's dead and cries over his dead body only for him to wake up and wipe her tears from his face all "EW, GROSS."  FUCK YOU, YOU FAKE-ASS USAGI.

And then this thing has the balls to tease a second season. As if anyone wanted a first season.

Yeah, that all sounds really rotten. I was going to compare this to the new kid-centric He-Man show, but I think that's probably still a lot better, even though it's not great.

Reminds me of how Netflix's adaptation of Jeff Smith's "Bone" recently died on the vine. I can only imagine that if it had gone forward, it might have ended up something like this.

Yuck.

He mentioned getting his "dream team" of people to work on the Bone movie so I have a feeling it actually would've been much better. It sounded like Smith was much more involved with Bone than Sakai was with Samurai Rabbit. With Bone complete, Smith was probably less picky when it comes to rights issues or whatever. Meanwhile Sakai's still working on Usagi Yojimbo. Also, Bone was supposed to be a movie. I think if Samurai Rabbit had actually just been a movie, that might've made it more tolerable. Instead, the extra run time gets filled with more lame jokes and stilted action sequences.

I've seen about as much of that kiddy He-Man show as I've have of Samurai Rabbit and He-Man is definitely better than Samurai Rabbit.  If only for the fact that it appears better animated and has far better character interaction than Samurai Rabbit does. When it comes to the main character, Adam is good while Usagi is an unmedicated PITA. The character in He-Man closer to personality to Usagi is probably the Duncan character and putting the more obnoxious character in the background is always the right call. Unfortunately, He-Man also manages to have scenes with rising tension getting capped off with "herp a-derp, here's a zinger." And it's also just as ugly as Samurai Rabbit when it comes to character design. (Fuck off, little head He-Man and bike shorts Teela.)  If Samurai Rabbit is a 3/10 then He-Man's like a 5/10. If I were a parent and my kid wanted to see He-Man on repeat, I could live with it. If they felt the same way about Samurai Rabbit, I'd be outright canceling my Netflix subscription.

This thing stays on my radar because I follow Stan Sakai and an Usagi page on Facebook so this shit's shooting on my feed.  Some review material is calling him Yuichi.  I saw some production art and he's "Yuichi Usagi" on one piece while another piece with the OG character has that character as "Miyamoto Usagi."  Huh?  Wait, did the people making this think "Usagi" was his last name? Why wasn't this character Yuichi Miyamoto if Usagi Miyamoto is his ancestor? Unless Yuichi is supposed to be his last name and, uh... IS Yuichi a last name? Because I've only seen it as a first name.

Hahaha. Nah, they fucked up. Obviously they wanted to keep "Usagi" in the title but then they fucking biffed it as it relates to the MC.

I haven't watched anymore of it. I probably won't based on your scathing takedown.
