Boo! Snow!
« on: Feb 15, 2021, 01:31:22 PM »
I think we had the last snow back in 2011.  Woke up to several inches blanketing everything along with intermittent powet outages.  Joy.  Also, first world problems.  But I can still be grumpy about it.

I'd be really excited if I were a kid.  As an adult, I'm just don't like my powet being shut off and on and a bunch of melting ice sitting on my roof.

We didn't get snow, but we did get an assload of ice, which is generally a guarantee of freezing my ass off due to lack of powet and not being able to wash or cook due to no water and having to work through the middle of everything.

That said, I'm still shocked I have heat...and powet...and water...and a couple days off work...!

Yay, "snow"!

Everyone here's freaking out. Our "intermittent powet" became "oops, no powet" for a lot of folks including me. I randomly woke up and checked my phone and it was super cold. I'm warming it up and found I finally can browse the internet on my phone. We couldn't even use phone data most of the day. Our infrastructure's really gone to shit right now. Hoping it gets somewhat fixed tomorrow.

Good for you that you at least have powet. Usually the worst we ever get is ice but our powet still stays on. And lots of stuff shut down so people can't exactly call for pizza.

A nice warm 42° day high is before us. And then more sleet. But at least we're given enough powet to get hot drinks and meals for part of the day before freezing our butts off at night.

And now a fresh layer of powder is covering everything after we were almost defrosted. But at least we have electricity, water, and the snowfall is beautiful to look at as I'm tucked under my blankie.

Ha ha, yeah, heard about that precious lil' gem. The article doesn't mention it (at least not that I saw) but his wife got canned from her job at a school.

It's still snowing and hasn't stopped. I've never seen this much snow in, what, over thirty years. And never in this city. We moved back here permanently around 88/89. And I only recall the snow we got for, like, one day in 2011.

People are all "they weren't prepared." For what? We don't get this weather here. Inches of pure, white snow. Our roofs and cars covered with snow. We get, at most, a single ice day every other winter. Also, people here cannot drive. (Every out-of-towner I meet always confirms this.) So stone cold roads are extra dangerous.

Our powet was out for about half a day starting last night, so last night was uncomfortable. It could have been much worse, and in light of that I'm thankful. I think a lot of people simply don't understand how freak this event actually is...yeah, it can get pretty cold down here during the winter, but we can't stockpile salt and keep snowplows at the ready for something that might happen every 20 years at best. It's like poor-mouthing New England for not being prepared for Super Storm Sandy, like they get hurricanes...like, ever.

The top comment on that linked page is sad and true.  They probably missed out on a bunch of wages after cleaning and going home after that shift.

Anyway, we defrosted completely today. Appears everything is back to normal, which is nice. Not sure about the stores and gas and shit.  Haven't been to any stores since I got sick so no idea what they look like out there. But we at least had food at home to eat so hopefully I'll be able to order my next grocery delivery with no problems in a few days.

Is it normalizing somewhat? I haven't really heard anything else about y'all's Winter Wonderland in the last few.

Yeah, back on the day of my prior post. We have schizo weather. It got hot an' everything. Almost 80°F. Well, not as hot as it can get but hot enough for me. Schmoo was able buy some eggs and bread a few days ago. Not sure if the stores are actually stocked normally though.

that snow week was pretty fucked. we had intermittent powet but were fine. knew people who didn't have powet the entire week and had to head to motels or bunk at friends/family all week. also some busted pipes.

all because Texas couldn't stand the thought of its powet grid being regulated, and in not regulating didn't require winterization of any powet plants so the generator companies opted to save money and not winterize (shocker) since we don't get this kind of weather often (at least not across the entire state, my region gets iced once a decade or so but the rest of the state can offload powet in that scenario).

and if Texas had been linked in to the national grids (parts of it are, like El Paso, where powet was not lost for most at all) we could have had help from other parts of the country.

oh, and now the mask mandate is gone and businesses can operate at 100%. our leaders fucking hate us.

A bunch of my plants died. We had a bunch of aloe outside and they were basically corpses: bloated, smelly, with insects crawling about and liquid oozing out of them. I had to cut all of the rotten bits off and they would be limp, heavy, and gooey. Like, cut it and it would **spurt!** and drip and splatter. Jeez.  :joe:
