Hello, I'm Doug
« on: Apr 28, 2005, 10:25:11 PM »
XP is pissing me off like crazy right now. I'm suprised it works at all.

Week or two ago, I was turning on my computer, and for some reason my computer turned on immediately, rather than me hitting the powet button. Went straight to bios and said something was wrong. Didn't see anything wrong so I went into Windows, only to notice the system time said Jan 31, 2001. That was easy to fix.

Ever since then, Windows has been acting crazy. Sometimes I click on "My Computer" and it freezes, or Windows crashes. Sometimes when I insert my flash drive, I can't do anything with any files anymore, like copy, delete, or open them. I tried right clicking on C drive to do a scandisk and it crashed Explorer every time I did it. I tried doing a diagnostic only to have the program freeze, then when I pressed Ctrl-alt-delete, it said the program had closed, but it was still frozen! Occasionally, I start up the computer, and instead of Windows, I get a black screen. Sometimes the computer can't find the hard drive but Windows works anyway. And that's only the beginning of the insanity.

I asked a guy at a computer repair shop if he had an idea on what to do. He said:

"You should reinstall Windows. That's the only thing I can say. In fact, you should reinstall windows every 6 months to keep your computer running well."
"You mean, reformat the hard drive and start over?"
"Sure. Save your files, wipe the drive clean, reinstall windows, then put your files back."

Thanks for the help.

I feel like one of those people on the Mac commercials. "I once had a pc, but it died on me, now I'm a Mac user!" Oddly enough, my grandfather is taking me to the local Apple store tomorrow for the release of OS X Tiger. I should bring my credit card.  <_<

I wouldn't have any idea where to begin to reinstall Windows.

I think all that trouble has something to do with all the naughty stuff Doug looks at.

No, not my legal pr0n collection :(

I decided to scan my computer with 2 virus programs, my expiring one and a free one off the web. NAV refused to scan at all until I was in safe mode. The other program almost installed itself then froze at the end of the install. Then, I tried updating it, and it froze> I tried scanning and it froze. I tried again and it froze. Finally it let me scan.

Neither found anything. Either it's a Windows update, or a background process, i'm sure.

The Mac logo is actually the representation of a schizophrenic prisoner.  Didn't you know?

Now you ask people which half's the fire hydrant rapist and which half beats old people and if they get it right, you get to take a drink.

PCs don't screw up if you take good enough care of them.
10,000 steps down, round and round. One night on the town and I'm hellbound ... Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me. My little tower, seal my fate. Help me pay back, end their hate. Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me

Well, kiddie pr0n sites are probably riddled with ad-ware, spyware and viruses...  I guess if he had a Mac he wouldn't have to worry so much.

I've considered doing that as a last resort short of reinstalling.

I went to the mac store for the release of OSX Tiger and it was packed. I was surrounded by a bunch of crazed Mac fanatics with giant grins on their faces like they were either high on extasy or had the best sex in their life. It was, however, because of their massive egos. Every time I mentioned I was a PC user, they scoffed at me as if I hadn't "seen the light" yet, and acted like they were enlightened because they had the superior system. They assumed that PC = Windows even though I could have had a linux system for all they knew.

It was like being an outsider at a cult meeting. I wouldn't be suprised if they sacraficed a PC right there in Steve Jobs' name.

A system restore isn't that big a deal.  You kinda make it sound like it's inline with a reinstall and it's not.

Yeah. It doesn't erase all your stuff. I think it just changes your system registry to one of the backups and uninstalls any programs that you've installed since the restore point, since that's usually where the problem is. But you can usually restore to right after the last time you installed something (before whatever caused the problem of course) and not lose anything else.

Even if I were to deny it, you wouldn't believe me.

So, rather than argue with you, I just put you on ignore. It's a lot easier.

I restored the system to a previous point and it doesn't seem to be helping much. Either I didn't restore it far enough, or that's not going to work.

And now, I'm just going to reinstall Windows.

When it told me to do a windows update, I did the "install update and shut down" last night. This morning it was still trying to install the first update. I just said "fuck this, I'm gonna reformat"

Someone recommended linux.. maybe as a dual boot, but all my games I own are windows.

Did you try deleting old stuff, or making backups then deleting things? You don't really need all that pr0n do you?
