And I know I posted this on FB already, but it looks like the people of Arus are, like, elf-things.  I guess that's not so terrible, but I miss the blonde human-looking princess.  I wish they at least kept her blonde.  Worse thing about new princess tho'?  Her shit accent.  It's like Crispy Crunch Freeman trying to do a Britishy accent.  It's jarring.  I was watching Resident Evil Degeneration the other day; actually just listening to it.  And when Freeman spoke, he just pulled me right out of what I was doing.  And not in a good way.  At least he's a decent actor but the accent is awful.  You better at least have Rob Paulsen Saber Rider-tier accent powers before trying that.  At minimum.

I didn't care for vintage Voltron. This is completely uninteresting to me.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Ha ha, yeah.  She looks a bit like a cross between Katara and Aisha Clan-Clan.  I mean, if they were gonna weeb they should've just gone the Apollo Smile route instead.

Her look is very familiar. Seems there is a a dozen anime girls with that skin tone, that hair, that posture, and those ears.

Still wondering how Shiro (Is that's right? Shiro? Weird it isn't Sven, but whatever.) bites the big one. Cause we all know that is gonna happen.

I hate that posture.  I'm not hopeful for her character specifically.  I also find it weird that there isn't a Sven.  It's like I'm doing a Saber Rider reboot and I leave out the rhyming wolfman and just put some random dog guy in his place.  I mean, the show won't suffer for doing that.  A lot of people wouldn't remember that character in the first place and most of my viewers won't care that I changed something like that.  But I don't know why the fuck you'd do that if you're pandering to the nostalgia crowd (which a Voltron reboot has to).  Like space mice.  There better be freakin' space mice.

I do expect Shiro to die.  I think it's likely that won't happen until near the end of the series (like two to three eps near the end), although I'd prefer a more Kamina-like exit: lose him in the first third of the series quickly and dramatically.  Of course, they may not be that brave at all and he could just be incapacitated.  I don't think they'll cop out though but I give 5% to us getting a wheelchair-Shiro, 5% to coma-Shiro, or something like that.

Also.... if the princess has pointy ears now... does that mean Lotor gets normal ears?

Maybe now Colonel Gentleman can assemble that Voltron figure he always wanted.

lol, I felt like I needed subtitles for that guy.

Website for this show: http://www.voltronlegendarydefender.com/

Also, I stumbled across something on Tumblr about Lauren Montgomery that kinda disturbed me.  The original post is called "Diversity for Diversity’s Sake is Bad Form":

To wit, Montgomery can be quoted from The Nerdist saying: “In the original GoLion [anime], he was named Shirogane Takashi, and so we were trying to make a slightly more diverse line up…. we were like, ‘Five white guys! And one of them is Norwegian with a weird accent!’ So, you know, we went back and looked at the Sven character, and he had the kung-fu outfit on, and he just looked the most Japanese, so we were like let’s just make him that way. They were all Japanese in the original”.  Casey, Dan. “VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER CAST, RELEASE DATE, AND MORE REVEALED (EXCLUSIVE).” Nerdist. The Nerdist, 25 Mar. 2016. Web. 11 Apr. 2016.

Oh, man, that is just seriously cringey.  And just because they were voiced by (presumably) white people in the original, that didn't make them "five white guys."  Especially not Keith who has the generic Japanese protag appearance seen everywhere during that era.  You can't race-code by voice actor anyway because the majority in the industry are white anyway.  It's like saying Samurai Jack is black because he's voiced by Phil Lamar.

Quote
There Lauren Montgomery strikes again making another comment (about 12 minutes and 17 seconds into the recording):  “[… ] We couldn’t really justify having a Swedish guy, you know, trying to get some diversity on the team.” RipCurl808. “Voltron Legendary Defender Panel - WonderCon 2016” YouTube. YouTube, 27 Mar. 2016 Web. 11 Apr. 2016.

Incoming bitch-fest...

This is why so many people hate the call to diversity: because people who don't understand it do this stupid, unnecessary shit.  And she gives into that fallacy that non-white people only have ethnic names and "ethnic appearance."  Having a Swedish guy would've been VERY diverse.  If she was so concerned about diversity, she could've casted Asian-American actors for the rest of the pilots instead of just Steven Yeun as Keith.  She could've made them all Japanese like they originally were.

Fine, you made Lance and Hunk browner.  That's cool.  But then they go and make the princess a black elf and wipe Sven out of existence?  Again, could've made the princess black if they wanted to, but she should've kept her blonde hair, human ears, and pink dress.  (Her dress now has a lot of blue.)  They just did too much to her.  It's like making a new Mickey Mouse show and Mickey is now a fluffy grey mouse with blue pants.  How is she visually Allura anymore?  She looks more like a water bender.  If they wanted Sven to be non-white, why didn't they just make Sven a black guy or of some Middle Eastern descent?  If they took two seconds to Google demographics in Sweden, they'd've seen a variety of types.  They just went "welp, Swedish = white.  Nope nope."  They made their precious Japanese character... and casted non-Japanese half-Faye Josh Keaton as the voice.  Hey, I got nothing against Josh Keaton.  He was a great Hal Jordon in GL:TAS.  But WHY?  And they named him Shiro.  They used a piece of his last name for his first name?  Why didn't they name him Takashi?  That's just... not a nice thing to do.  I can just visualize this: "Well, like, Shiro means white and his mohawk is, like, white."  So, if he's "the Japanese guy," what are everyone else?  And they made him the beefiest, tallest one.  So is Hunk now a manlet or do we assume puberty's not quite there yet?

I mean, I'm for diversity in my media but I don't think a lot of these people (meaning people who make tv shows, movies, and whatnot) think it through beyond "let's toss in some brown people."  You can make them brown, ethnic, whatever and keep them the same characters.  Vaporizing away poor Sven was total unnecessary.  In the end, I don't think the show will suffer for it.  Some people who watched the original show may not even remember Sven that well depending on what episodes they saw.

Oh, here's another thing:  The pilots are referred to as "paladins."

I took all the pilots as Japanese except Sven who I thought was Chinese. Despite their American names, they look the parts of most Japanese super teams of the time.

Allura and Coran were actually the two characters I thought WERE White. I mean Allura was blonde and Coran was modeled to look "European" of some kind.

Yeah, I pretty much read them that way as well.  I also thought Sven was Chinese because they always stick the Chinese dude in that type of outfit.

That's why I thought that as well. I'd seen enough Kung Fu movies to know that was pretty much Chinese uniform. Also somehow I knew as kid this show came from Japan. Don't know how I knew that...can't remember an Anime show I watched before this one, but I just knew.

It's looking nice from those clips, but I think I'm gonna miss this show.  It comes out this Friday and I might be leaving for an indeterminate amount of time on Wed.  No Netflix at my dad's.  I guess I could try streaming Netflix through my phone since I bought some extra data, but that's supposed to be my surfing data.  It seems like a good time to practice some self-restraint and wait until I'm back home to stream it.  But I might cave.

I'll be getting it the same way I got Jessica Jones and Daredevil Season 2.

And that way is completely legal....from a certain point of view.  :raiseeyebrow:

Okay, so I didn't leave and I'm watching Voltron right now.  First impressions...

- This is feeling like someone's fanfic.  Not someone's bad fanfic even though there's some cringey parts.  But it feels like a fanfic.

- Lance, Pidge, and Hunk are, like, this trio of losers.  Which makes me sad.  They are WAY too hyper-active: they talk too fast and they're too expressive e.g. wacky.  Hunk is especially obnoxious: he's a constantly gaping glutton that comes across brain-dead retarded until the plot requires him to be smart.  He keeps fuckin' puking.  I'm getting progressively disgusted at what they've done to him.  I would like Lance a lot better if he were dialed back some...  If you told a teenager to write a "cool guy," they'd write a guy close to Lance.  He's also some sort of Shiro stan and he's a bit of a creeper to Allura.  Coran just appeared on screen and he's being as hyper as Lance, Pidge, and Hunk.  The fuck.  "They don't call me the Coranic for nothing."  That was a joke.  Between his name and the word "mechanic."

- Keith "washed out" of Galaxy Garrison despite being the best pilot in his class and has been living in a shack in the desert like a crazy man following "energy" he can't explain.  None of it made any sense at all.  And best pilot in his class?  But how big is the class?  How many other classes are there?  It's just very vague.  (Like, Lance is apparently not as great a pilot, with Keith calling him a "cargo pilot" like an insult.  But Lance was still second behind Keith who's supposed to be good.  So he can't be that bad, right?  Even though we see little evidence of Keith being so much better than Lance.  And Lance was supposed to be the best pilot!)  Keith's the least obnoxious, probably because they have him talk and take part in the plot the least.  He also appears to be taking breaths in between sentences unlike some of these other actors.  I like how they make jokes about him having a mullet.

- I don't know what Galaxy Garrison IS in this universe.  It has some sort of identity crisis.  First it appears to have a trainee program so you're thinking they're youngish adults.  But then they talk about skipping class and "the principal" like they're in high school.  And they also talk about sneaking out after hours and finding girls like they're college kids.

- Shiro was abducted by Zarkon's men while on Pluto's moon with two of Pidge's relatives.  A year later, Shiro crash-lands back on Earth where the others find him.  He doesn't have any memory about what occurred after being abducted.  I don't know why Shiro's considered such a legend by Lance.  They never say so.  Voice actor is decent.  Keith, Shiro, and Allura are thankfully not as hyper as the rest of the main cast.

- Arus is still around but Allura is the princess of another planet called Altea.  That's one way to keep both names.  She's really more like Space Katara than she is Allura.  Allura's accent isn't too bad.  I still don't like it but it's nowhere near Freeman-level awful, probably because she's just doing some generic-sounding one and not really trying to be British or whatever.  She's now matching the pilots to their lions based on personality.  Yuck.  Never mind that she just met these guys, so matching on personality didn't make any sense.

- Space mice confirmed.  They could've made them cuter-looking.

- After they form Voltron, Hunk's all "I'm a leg!" all excited-like.  That was chuckle-worthy.

I'm hoping some of the flaws--mainly the "hyperness"--are addressed in subsequent episodes.  Seriously, sometimes they talk so fast, it feels like an old anime parody.  You know, like when someone makes fun of the old Speed Racer or something.  Going into the next ep now.

Remember how the pilots used to access their lions?  Well, sorry, Hunk's too fat.  That's the gag.  Look how cool everyone else is.  But Hunk's too fat.  I'm already tired of the fat jokes.  He's a puking fool that can't stop eating.  Hunk was a husky, strong-man with an appetite.  He wasn't a dumb tub of lard that would just stick green space goo in his mouth.

Coran continues to be a total cornball.  They've completely stripped him of his respectability.

Okay, going to put a spoiler warning here.  Until this point, nothing was really spoilery.

They keep bringing up Pidge and his "girlfriend" (specifically through a picture Pidge carries with him) and I reminded again and again about the rumor where Pidge is actually a girl in this version of Voltron.  I'm thinking the picture they keep showing us is a brother and sister.  The brother and the father were the ones that were captured and the sister is Pidge.  Which is interesting if they've done that but I'd also kinda hate that, too.  But they're telegraphing it: all the way to casting a chick as Pidge, to having him begin to separate from the others... Hunk is all grabbing Keith and Lance like "we're brothers, y'all" and Pidge is just off to the side.  They won't let us forget the damn photograph Pidge carries with him.  Pidge's brother is "Matt Holt."  Why not Chip?  :(

I'm kinda annoyed Haggar isn't more, uh, haggardly.  Her skin's all smooth and shit.  I haven't seen her cat yet and she doesn't cackle like an old witch anymore.

I originally planned to marathon all of this but I jumped ahead to the last ep, Ep 11 because I'm getting bored already.  (There technically IS 13 episodes since Ep 1 is, like, three episodes long.)  Ep 11 is not an ending at all.  They flee a battle and Haggar fucks with their wormhole.  No one appears to have really gained or lost anything, which makes the series feel like a big fat waste of time.  If there's a second season (which I would imagine there has to be), it'll be everyone spread around the universe and finding each other again.  No sign of Lotor.  Shiro still lives.  Meh.

I can't put my finger on exactly what went wrong with this.  It's not the girl-Pidge or the live-Sven.  This show's not as horrid as Voltron Force by a long-shot.  It looks nice visually although many of the alien designs feel lazy.  The voice acting appears to improve but Coran just continues to feel out of place.  Even when the situation sounds serious, he sounds all goofy and shit.  I guess the aforementioned lack of stakes was a big ding to this series.  Giving unlikable characters like Hunk and Coran too much screentime would be another ding.  Poor Keith seems bland.  It was nice when he showed some spark, but he still seems bland.  Maybe they should've shipped him and Allura so they could play that angle, because the show seemed empty.

http://www.avclub.com/review/spectacular-visuals-elevate-generic-voltron-legend-237849

Found a review that called it "generic."  Yeah, pretty much.  I guess the upside is that the show's passable enough for kids to enjoy it.  Us fogies from the 80's looking for our nostalgia kick won't find it here.  I give it 3/5 - Average.

Also Lance was totally Space!Sokka and Allura was Space!Katara.  Which felt weird.

So I was bitching discussing new Voltron with Merla.  And she was all "is Nanny in it?"  I forgot about Nanny!  No wonder this show felt so lifeless.  Nanny was the humor and this show didn't bother finding any characters to take her place!  Nanny chafed the pilots, they chafed her, and she was responsible (with Coran) for maintaining the princess's propriety.  Nanny would lay down the law when she had to.

I wish someone uploaded the clip where Lance trips Nanny.  That always cracked me up.
