MTV drops 'Music Television' from official logo
« on: Feb 12, 2010, 10:37:17 PM »
"The network now is home primarily to reality shows."  NOOO, RLY?   :joe:

Prepare to commence multiple *HEADDESK*, bolding mine:

Quote
MTV "realized being 'music television' was too limiting," said Dave Howe, president of Syfy, home of such series as "Stargate Universe" and the now-defunct "Battlestar Galactica." Howe says the right brand is essential "to cut through the noise and clutter of the media explosion" bedeviling the TV industry.

And he should know. Last summer, his network underwent a controversial name change, from the Sci-Fi Channel to Syfy, a made-up word that Twitter users said looked more like the name of a mop or a gossip magazine than that of a cable network. One newspaper called it the "dumbest rebranding ever."

But Howe says the name change has reenergized the network and sharpened its identity. Because it referred to a well-established genre, "sci-fi" could not be trademark-protected, an important consideration for a network looking to establish a distinctive identity. Also, he said, sci-fi evoked images of "space, aliens and the future," turning off some viewers and advertisers.

"We totally expected there to be a backlash from core sci-fi fans," Howe said. But the shift has "far exceeded our expectations . . . . It's opened up the network to a broader range of viewers" and helped boost ratings.

For its part, MTV says viewers had moved beyond what the old logo said. "The people who watch it today, they don't refer to MTV as music television," MTV's head of marketing, Tina Exarhos, told The Times this week.

[Story continues at link above...]

Maybe they don't, Tina, BECAUSE YOU TOOK ALL THE FUCKING MUSIC OFF!   :goddammit: :goddammit: :goddammit:

They put little captions on the screen when the reality shows play a song, of course the caption vanishes after a few seconds and only a few seconds of the song is heard.

So the way to make your network cut through the noise and clutter of the media explosion is to make it a less specialized, generic network that shows the same type of shitty programming everyone else does?

If they did it right, they could be millionaires, ala going the Soup and Jerry Springer route lampooning the drivel on other networks. But they won't.

You need to write that on a giant spoon and hit Tina Exharos with it.  I don't get it either.  It seems all of these networks are striving to be exactly alike.  Last time I saw TV Land, there was a reality show on it.  RLY, TV Land?  I'm supposed to be convinced there's a shortage of old shows to rerun?  SyFy doesn't wants to be something else other than science fiction, so it becomes "the giant bug movie channel".  And then CN with its whole "not just cartoons" campaign.  I'd say MTV's non-campaign of "not just music, in fact no music at all" trumps that one.  I remember when WE had promise and then canceled good shows to became the Bridezilla Channel.  One of my recent faves when I would visit my dad was GSN (Game Show Network) because it would show Lingo, the new Whammy, 20Q, and other odd, neat game shows.  In the past few months, it has apparently suffered an STD that results in giant marathons of "Deal or No Deal", a recent game show still in regular rotation on NBC AND in syndication that I can see almost anytime on regular fucking television.  And while I understand the business of acquiring Project Runway, I don't see how that fits in Lifetime's brand AT ALL.

Bah, I forgot to cap with: thus, all of the specialty channels are morphing into cheap live-action shit starring virtually nobody and reran into the dirt.

omg, I didn't know History Channel wasn't showing history!  "History made today"?  Fuck you, too.  Then there was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon on Logo.  Do we really need that?  rly?  I put it on Fuse and it was informercials.  Bah!  Merla and I went to go visit our dad this past weekend and he was all "say bye-bye to the stupid dish, i've canceled it".  No big loss.  Fuck that shit.  The price kept going higher and higher and the crap on there gets shittier and shittier.  And then you have to pay extra for Nicktoons, Boomerang, and Style and other shit.  I told him to get a nice antenna to catch digital channels with and a Netflix subscription.  Boom, all set.

Also, Bit-torrent. Neflix ONdemand plus torrent sites for new TV shows, basically best you can get without live.

Fuck cable. So pointless. Only thing I would want it for is hockey and occasionally other sports.

I feel the same way about network TV. I usually only watch Big Bang Theory and watch the rest on Cable.

omg, I didn't know History Channel wasn't showing history!  "History made today"?  Fuck you, too.

Someone in programing has a hard on for Modern Marvels I know that. Can't watch more then 2 hours of that channel without having to endure an episode.

Except that I don't pay for network, just for an antenna that captures just what I need: news, a bit of entertainment, three PBS channels, and a channel that shows some home/garden craft shit.  So I'm annoyed with regular tv too, but at least I don't get raped while they show all of their crap.

Merla's annoyed that figure skating is confined to some cable channel.  It's like worlds or some competition or something.  Is sports the only thing that more or less remains true to its audience these days as far as theme channels go?  You can't really get away with showing anything else, I suppose.

I used to love figure skating.  Who the hell decided that the stupid "leg lift around the ice" move that makes an audience of millions the skaters' gynecologist was mandatory?  :finger:

Very sad about MTV.  I was watching that first day when the astronaut planted the flag and "Video Killed The Radio Stars" played.  Maybe they'll do a "Crappy Reality TV Killed the Video Stars" show.

Figure skating used to be about skating figures into the ice. Now it is more like ice dancing, but they still call it figure skating.

Evan was the manliest dude on the ice this olympics. At least he had facial hair. all the other guys were fucking twinks. Did you guys see the emo gay guy for the american team? Wearing black and... PINK... for an outfit?

Can we get any skaters that have passed puberty?

And I see the paralympics just ended. Why don't they ever show that on TV? I'd watch it, I'd be interested in seeing how people got past their disabilities. No one seems to give a shit about cripples, really.  Joe's pissed and he's about to go Crippletron on people's asses.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

They're twinks for the same reason so many male interior designers, dancers, and stylists are twinks.  Because it's gay.  Very, very gay.  Nothing wrong with straight dudes joining the party, but that's gay country, son.  That's like wondering why half the guys on Project Runway carry a purse.

The late Christopher Bowman was a notable exception.  He'd finish his practices and nail the junior hockey players' girlfriends while they were busy towel-popping each other's butts in the locker room.

In the latest cable/satellite channel deviation is, well, old news but I'll post it anyway.

Palin on Discovery Channel.  I even have a new catch phrase for Discovery Channel.  Discovery Channel: We don't just care about the environment, we also don't give a shit.  And then the logo can show a seal littering before it's mercilessly clubbed to make a ankle warmer for J.Lo.

Nice for her but absolutely evil.  Discovery Channel should be ashamed at itself.  Only seppuku would satisfy me now.
