Say Goodbye to your TV
« on: Oct 04, 2007, 02:41:13 PM »
Quote
The industry has tried to get the word out, but many consumers still aren't getting the message: In a year and a half, millions of television screens could go dark.

Not the fancy high-definition TVs or those connected to cable or satellite. But the 70 million sets relying on rooftop or "rabbit ears" antennas will end up showing nothing but snow.

Broadcasters will stop sending analog signals and move to all-digital programming on Feb. 17, 2009. After that, antenna TV watchers will need a special converter box to watch their sitcoms and newscasts

Linkz

So this means, according to some friends, that if you don't have an HDTV or other digital tv, you won't be able to watch TV. I thought it just meant you can't get analog tv waves.

Edit:
This reminds me, I figured out the con game the HDTV industry is playing on consumers. If you take a standard TV, with a standard cable or analog signal, it looks crystal clear. You pop a DVD into your player on your standard TV, and it looks fine.

Play that same cable signal on an HDTV, and it's kinda blurry. Play that same DVD on an HDTV, and it's kinda blurry. You basically have to upgrade to HDTV signals and an HD-DVD or BluRay in order to get clear picture. The industry is basically forcing you to upgrade EVERYTHING.

But I should not be suprised. Corporations rule the country. We should all welcome our greedy capitalist overlords. It's better than being a communist. *cough*

I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

Or maybe that digital signals use less energy to broadcast, offer clearer pictures and much greater capacity for transmitting information?

Go fucking watch a black and white tv, you technophile.

Oh wait, it's pronounced pedophile. :D

This guy I'm living with has the new plasma tv. For some reason I don't see any difference in the image compared to a normal tv.

this only affects people who don't have cable. if you have cable, you're already getting digital TV and you'll never notice anything.

Read the article again. It says that most people don't know this. If I did, I probably forgot.

This guy I'm living with has the new plasma tv. For some reason I don't see any difference in the image compared to a normal tv.

There is no difference, besides the $1500 price tag.

In the business I'm going into you can't afford not to have cable so this doesn't effect me at all.

I'm with E.  This is sooooo old.  I've known about it for years.  In fact, if I recall, it was originally suppose to be implemented much earlier.  Like this year or something.  The reason "most people don't know" is because they're either old shut-ins that don't pay attention to anything outside of mothballs and their vegetable garden or they already have cable/satellite, can't imagine life otherwise, and therefore wouldn't bat an eyelash.

I can tell the difference between it as well when I watch DVDs. It's clear the picture has degraded by the time it arrives at my TV.

Aren't you in the wrong place, then? Miami's film business is limited to 80s remakes and Will Smith movies.

That's why he's moving.  Moving on up.  To the west coast.  So maybe not 'up'.  Moving on a bit up and to the side.  Or moving on down.  Or something.

What about Cajun?  Are you Cajun like Gambit?  Or possibly old school TMNT Leatherhead?

There will be a Government coupon to get a converter box for the people who are using Rabbit Ears.

I still use rabbit ears as the $50 dollar a month cable bill is too expensive.

Also, Cable isn't digital. It's analog. That's why cable companies sell both a "basic" cable package and a "digital cable" package.

But the feds aren't getting rid of analog cable, they're getting rid of analog airwaves.
