Once
« on: Jul 20, 2007, 12:18:40 PM »
I went to see the musical "Once" a week or so ago.  I think people actually walked out because they were frustrated with the accents.  It takes place in Dublin, Ireland.  In the beginning the main character confronts a guy on the street trying to rob him and the would-be thief had the thickest damn accent that barely made anything he was saying discernable.  And the love-interest was from the Czech Republic.  However, everyone else aside from that one guy was pretty easy to understand for the most part.

It's not like the new Hairspray or something in that people interrupt into song and dance.  It has a mellow, real life quality to it, like we've walked in on these people's lives and are watching them sing.  The two leads are muscians in rl and in the film.  I really liked the music, so I'll likely be getting the soundtrack in the near future.  (Not now 'cause I'm low on teh funds.  Maybe next month.)

I've seen previews for that.  If they don't randomly burst into song and dance with bright costumes then it's not a real musicial.  =(

You know, I'm a fan of that as much as anyone but this is a different sort of film.  It's introspective.  The poor guy is given courage to follow his dreams.  The leads don't even have names.  The music can be mellow but sweet with a lot of emotion behind it.  It's nice to see a film like this where they chose this kind of vision and went with it instead of trying to fit the standard that new Hairspray does with flash and dance-numbers.

I really am very confused.  WHY, in the name of all that is holy, are they remaking Hairspray?

I haven't seen new Hairspray, just parts of it, and it looks very mainstream and sanitized to me.  It's supposedly based off of the play that's based off the movie and serves to showcase the songs written for the play, so there are many musical differences.  Somewhat disturbing to me, John Travolta said he wanted to play Edna Turnblad "straight".  Hell, Divine was playing both parents, John Travolta should've, too.  I don't understand why they couldn't have put another musical to the screen.  There has be dozens of them ripe for their own movie.  Oh well, I guess that would've made too much sense.  They needs ta whore teh name.   :-\

The original Hairspray was pretty good.  That's when Ricki Lake was a little fatty.

Although Christopher Walken is in the new one, I don't think it's enough incentive for me to go see it.

She still looked fatty when I last saw her.  Nothing bad about a little meat, just sayin'.

But she was a lot heavier back in the day.  Nothing wrong with a little meat, I agree.

How about the fact John Travolta's in there as a chick?

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

Oh, yeah. I must have been the only girl in my class not glued to the set when Welcome Back Kotter was on.  I watched maybe one episode to see that "Hotsy" Totsy chick because some guy said I looked like her, but I couldn't stand John Travolta.  :puke:

The innate weirdness of John Waters was part of the appeal of the original for me.  Now it's just sorta normal.

I have no problems with his ass, he just had to go and speak like he had something worth saying.  That horrid attitude was such a turn-off.

Nuri made the Danny Puke-O comment.     I didn't like any of the Sweathogs, or Saturday Night Fever or pretty much anything John Travolta was in until Pulp Fiction.  Nothin' wrong with bad boys...Lucius Malfoy q~~~~~

Nothing wrong with bad boys, Puke-o was just a stupid jerk.  Why couldn't he lead those other wanks, be cool, race cars and shit AND date Sandy?  "I'm too cool for Sandy".  No, you're not, prickass!  Sandy was smart, sweet, and hot.  She was Olivia fucking Newton-John!  What was wrong with him?  Bah.  Inept, over-greased, thick-skulled, sack of pus.

She wasn't too innocent.  She just didn't know.  She had a totally open mind.

Well, you have to think like him. He was a guy in highschool, all hormonal and shit, and next to him you see this goody-goody girl that pisses me off for being too innocent!

Screw him and screw his hormones, so to speak.  I don't want to think like that oaf.  This is probably why I don't like a lot of dudes to begin with.  People want to talk out of their ass all they want about how humans are higher creatures, but then they can't even control their idiotic base impulses. I find it pathetic and unattractive.

A candy bar with boogs and bits o' brain?

Well, there were these little chocolate candy pellets that came in a plastic tube once called Dingleberries....
