Yeah forcing us to watch previews on dvds is bullshit.

Oh, you guys don't know what I mean.

I mean the previews on series, after the credits. It was cool on High School of the Dead because there was a little bit that wasn't always in the next episode and then rapid flashes of scenes and noises for the next episode.

In Full Metal Panic it's just the girl talking over shit and spoiling too much.

Yes I can just stop the video or skip past them, and I usually do, but I still find them annoying.

Those previews are part of the show. If they cut them out, you'd have an even more vocal group of people whining to put them back in.

"Where the fuck are the previews? These DVDs have been edited! Ragrgagragaaargagagaaaa!"

Yeah ... but ... it's a DVD (or Netflix or Hulu or Crunchyroll) ... you can just watch the next episode instead of teasing and/or spoiling the next episode that you're just going to watch anyway.

But you don't have to watch the preview! It's only there if you want it!

This is nothing new. Anime has had next episode previews for as long as I can remember. I don't watch them, because you're absolutely right, a lot of the time they give away a lot of surprising, cool shit!

I mean, you know these shows are originally made for television and broadcast on a weekly basis. Previews on DVDs and streaming sites and wherever else are merely a vestigial part of a previous incarnation.

Skip 'em.

I get why they keep them on the Internet streams, especially the ones that are just broadcast recordings.

I don't get it on DVDs, unless the preview is remarkable in some way.

Another good example is the previews on Arrested Development. They weren't real.

Anime...heck, most shows preview their next episode. It's part of the show...in fact, the previews for Evangelion are more or less an iconic part of the series. Just hit the skip chapter as soon as you see credits and hit it until a new episode starts.

As for those advertisements that start your disc and won't let you skip, after you put the disc in and it starts spinning up, hit stop and then menu on the remote. It generally goes straight to the menu at that point.

And I liked Full Metal Panic. The first season is a bit awkward, but it got pretty enjoyable halfway through, once the farce of Sousuke trying to be incognito in school was over and it focused more on killing terrorists. Then it balanced out better. Second season (FUMOFFU) was totally awesome...it took the first season and make the whole thing a comedy. Third season was good, but it took the first season and made it totally serious and dark, and I felt it went too far in this direction. But the second and third were both better than the first, with two being the best.

On anime previews, I don't mind them part of the time when they are done in a comedic, vague, or otherwise unconventional way that yields no real spoilers.  Escaflowne did this well enough I feel with just the whole "Escaflowne"-bit, the music, and snippets of scenes and dialogue.  I also like Kyo Kara Maoh Season 1 where it's in a tiny box and the guy's just blabbering on over it.  But as for the shows where they tell you the whole fuckin' story and ruin upcoming scenes or twists, yeah, I don't like those either.  I guess the idea is so few things aren't based on a manga or book or whatever that the public already knows what's happening next and are being given a heads up.  Once I realize what type a series has, I usually fast forward if it's the latter and I'm not looking to be spoiled at that time.

I remember on Excel Saga, Excel would pop up in a little bubble set against a fake 20th Century Fox logo and spew out the next episode's plot summary so rapidly that it was practically unintelligible.

Those were okay.

I was really fucking pissed that my Sailor Moon S and SuperS DVDs didn't have the next episode previews.  Oh well at least I have my subbed VHS tapes, laser dics and region 2 DVDs that have them.  But if it wasn't for that I'd be really pissed!

But yeah, it's part of the show.  If I haven't seen the show before I ignore them, but if I have them I watch them.

I also hate when they cut out the opening credits.  Sometimes they'll have like 7 episodes on a disc so they put the opening credits, then all the episodes together, then one set of closing credits.  Well different episodes have different credits, assholes!  Maybe I want to watch different characters.

Or for Sailor Moon S they had changing intros throughout the series where new characters were added as they showed up.  The original intro has very little going on, but by the end we have ChibiUsa and a bunch of others pop up all over.  The placements of the changes, sometimes with groupings of characters who appear in close enough episodes, sometimes when you know they're in it, sometimes when you don't, is very historically interesting when considered in the context of what people knew when this show first aired.  Then the North American DVDs just put one intro for the whole season.  Fuck those guys.  Fuck them in their asses.

It needed pointing out.

I just started rewatching Excel Saga. It's...not as good as I remember, but I'm still watching, so there.

Actually, most anything.  I remember seeing Heathcliff on Netflix.  "Oh, I loved that stupid orange cat!"  I shut it off after, like, two minutes.

I agree, but I'll echo Beck on this one: most stuff isn't as good the second time around. It's like leftovers for dinner.

But with Excel Saga, I think it has to do with the fact that I'm just not into anime like I was at the time I saw it. It's like I see but don't observe, to quote Sherlock Holmes...I'm more interested in just relaxing and playing it through than actually getting into it. ES is not one you can casually watch, given that I can't understand anything without the vid notes. That makes it take forever to watch and requires more of me, whereas not having it is just weird.

I watched Eight Clouds Rising.  It's a 14-year-old OVA with two episodes and nothing more.  Which is a shame because I thought it was really good.

No one right now.  The series is playing again in other countries, so I think if there was a serious buyer it could actually be rereleased now, but I don't think anyone's biting.

I watched some of Night Raid 1931.  Loved the setting but Greg Ayres voice was really ill-suited to it.  Also, it was kinda dull, probably because people are doing all kinds of shit and I have no worldly idea why.  Later found out the episode I watched was just a prologue episode, but I don't think I'll give this one another shot.  Pass.

I find Greg Ayres' voice really ill-suited to most roles he's played, unless it's that of a whiny bitch.

:lmao:  I thought he was okay as one of the Hitachin twins in Ouran.  His Son Goku from Saiyuki gets a pass, too, but that character sorta IS a whiny bitch.  But I think the number of roles he should be playing greatly dwarf the number he's actually casted in.

I watched this thing called Tears to Tiara.  I thought the first ep was pretty good.  But then I saw more episodes and it kinda gets dumber imo.  The main dude apparently is going to get a loli harem (YAWN), it injects more comedy into the plot (most of it falls flat), and skips important parts (like the main dude becoming chief of the tribe and not one fuck is given that day, huh?)... among other things.  I don't think I'll be sticking with it if it continues getting progressively stupid like this, but I'm going to give it another ep or two.  If it plateaus, I could stand to see the end since the story moves at good pace.  Also, the secondary male character is played by Chris Ayres, older brother to Greg, whose voice is equally irritating AND he's trying to do some kind of accent at the same time.  EGAD.  Awful.  In fact, several characters had weird inconsistent accents.  I don't know why they bothered to tell you the truth.

So there's a Blade anime!  So I downloaded all of that, now I have to figure out how to watch this damned thing on my PS3.  Removeable subs are cool and all but I want something I don't have to watch on my fucking computer, thanks.

You could hardcode the subs using XviD4PSP, which is pretty simple but takes a while. I recommend streaming it from your computer using Playstation Media Server, particularly if you have a wired connection between the computer and PS3. It's much quicker, and you can set it to display subs. It also preserves the (usually) nice formatting from Advanced SSA subtitling used in most fansubs.
