Celebrities + dance + past hits + CG + hokey environmental message (and maybe + famous Australians). But I guess there wasn't much competition that year anyway. I just saw it and won't descend into my usual nitpickery except Elijah Wood as a penguin is really, really fucking creepy.

It was up against Cars and Monster House, right?

I liked both of those, but I don't think either was deserving of an Oscar.

I haven't seen Happy Feet, but I somehow doubt it was any worthier.

Seems like a default victory, and it could have gone to any of them.

Yeah, that exactly. I haven't seen either one of those, and I wasn't interested enough to. I wasn't even planning on seeing Happy Feet, Merla rented it so I went ahead and watched most of it. It just irks me that it'll be ranked up there with Spirited Away and Finding Nemo, which are three and four star films. Happy Feet is probably two and half at best. Not terrible, certainly not great.

That's a good question. I remember Merla and I were looking at TV listings and there were a lot of stupid movies given generous star ratings while other more decent movies were given like one or none.

I agree. He is forever going to be viewed as Frodo. Or the weird guy who dresses like Charlie Brown in Sin City. No, more like Frodo.

Yeah, his penguin was doing all of these surprised expressions, just like he would do when he was handling the one ring. And the penguin has his eyes! Most disturbing of all, his penguin maintains his chick fuzz and doesn't ever look like a true adult, so when he hooks up with that penguin-girl at the end, it looks like pedophilia.

And for being G-rated, there was sure a generous helping of sexual innuendos.

I saw the beginning of it yesterday and realized the first half of that movie is about an M.R. child. Then it becomes "Footloose". Then it turns all "Inconvenient Truth". And I also realized the only reason I gave it the generous **1/2 stars was due to the cholo penguins, who are actually very entertaining. It would been a much better movie if it had been about them.

During our "ice storm", birds were slipping on the branches and feeder. Except for the sure-footed cardinal in my avatar, it was a songbird Happy Feet.
