This has been bothering me all day since last night. I was reading about Darwin’s controversial and little known theory of sexual selection. According to this theory man has developed ethic trait differences due to sexual selection. For example if your parents are brown-eyed brunettes or if you were reared in a community of brown-eyed brunettes you are more likely to seek out and mate with a brown-eyed brunette people because that is what you consider beautiful. Over time a community will come to resemble itself whether it is they all have a certain skin color, height, nose shape, eye-color, ECT. This is known as the founder effect. Those genes become the ones to dominate and that is what gives the human ethic groups their differences.

The author then writes “Just as some birds of paradise ended up with yellow plumes and yellow hair and others with black plumes, so some human populations ended up with yellow hair and others with black hair, some with blue eyes and others with green eyes, some with orange nipples and others with brown nipples.” My question is just who the hell has orange nipples!?!? Has anyone ever seen orange nipples? Does anyone have them? What ethic group is this? I thought nipples were either some shade of pink or brown. I expect IDE to have the answers.

Well of course that after a time, a community is going to start having the same traits, if they get together with one another!

Hmmm just because Darwin said that, that doesn't mean it's true, you know.
And about orange nipples, the poor guy was so old he probably confused colors. Who has brown nipples anyways! There's only one color of nipples!
Actually two if you count pink and beige.
You know, nowadays there are many people arguing that the "Origins of species" is not always right, for example his intermediate-phase fossils theory (fossils that of course haven't yet been discovered). I even wrote a paper about this and read the book( I was, after all, a genetics minor).

In other words, maybe when Darwin saw "orange nipples" he was a lil drunk or a lil old:-p or maybe he was talking about monkeys:-D

No, no, no. I'm sorry I didn't properly explain. It wasn't Darwin that was talking about the orange nipples. The book I am currently reading is The Third Chimpanzee. It is about the human spieces and how in short time we have changed from just animals to world conquerors. The author is Jared Diamond and he is the one talking about the orange nipples.

Brown nipples do exist! I've seen them in the locker room.

Sexual Selection theory has nothing to do with Natural selection theory (Origin of Species). Natural selection states that only the fittest (strongest, fastest, smartest, ECT.) survive. Sexual selection states that traits that have no obvious survival value play a role in securing mates. For examples the manes of lions and the tails of peacocks. Why do some men prefer blonds? Blond hair is useless in the struggle for survival.

I believe Darwin's natural selection theory. I haven't formed an opinion on sexual selection theory. This is the first I heard of it. Never came up in any of college biology class.

If anyone has not yet read Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, I highly recomend it, BTW.

Yeah but then think about what the "sexual selection theory" will mean in the future. If you think about it, we , in a "couple of years" or more(hundreds and hundreds of years...or maybe less, who cares, it won't affect us), will end up looking like what nowadays are called the "aliens". Have you thought about that before? We would look androgenous, i.e. Michael Jackson

Ahh the elusive (but deadly) orange nipple. It was a hot summer night in '02 when I caught one unawares...it smashed my left index and middle finger to a pulp when I attempted to touch it before vanishing into the night.

My advise is to proceed with caution.
