As in a column in SA's alt publication, "The Current", about
the lack of color (ie. Hispanicanatinos) on tee vee.
Not that I neccessarily disagree but ZOMG don't fuckin' watch if it's too white. I don't. Latinos are supposedly this huge share of the market, so Latinos, turn it to novelas and Ugly Betty and tell the execs to fuck themselves if you don't like it. Take your wallets elsewhere. It's easier than it sounds.
I'm also annoyed by several things: Firstly, unless a Latino isn't obviously a beaner of some sort, isn't the right shade of brown, or not an ethnic name, it's almost like they don't count. How many lists of "Latinos/Hispanics/whatevers on TV" have we seen Alexis Bledel, Nicole Richie, and Charlie Sheen on? Where's Michelle Rodriguez's lesbo ass? It's like if they don't crunch a taco or wave around a flag, they "ain't representin'".
The article goes on about how Hispanic characters aren't "being allowed to reveal characteristics of Hispanic cultures". Like what, whipping out teh Spaniche? Wearing a
sombrero? Breaking a
pinata? Making
paella? Drinking beer while driving in their
peek-up wailing
gritos? Screw that business. This is America. How many people even do that? How many Germans wear liederhossen or Chinese chicks walk around in a freaking
qipao?
And they aren't gonna convince me with that whole charge of TV creating a "reality of Hispanic criminals and underclass misfits" when I SEE THEM EVERYDAY. On the same note, you don't strike one for Latinos by casting a Latina as a white woman! (Alba Storm, I'm looking at j00!) A "victory" would be Dark Angel movie or a cool team of Latino superheroes or something, not trying to fill an ethnic quota by casting someone very wrong for the damn role. While I think many roles can cross race and even gender, you can tell when they're just "filling in the blanks" and its a teeny bit insulting.
And we're not all pro-immigration! People should be encouraged to immigrate properly, not sneak in the dark of night like vampires so they can die in the desert when el Sun comes up.
So I was thinking, "Hey, they have a good point. They cast a lot of us as maids and gardeners. Is that fair?
Or could that be because it's true (pages 5 and 6)?" And
look who's going to jail. Maybe we should try educating our people before we try to get them on TV. Priorities, dang it. The huge portion of sheltered white people working for television that go to Disneyland every year, own their homes, and go all the way to Hong Kong to buy wooden birdcages they could've gotten in a Chinatown flea market for "five dolla" don't know any freakin' better. Educate Latinos, get them those jobs, and they'll put other Latinos on TV.
La raza, bitches.
