Okay folks - listen up....
« on: Nov 03, 2004, 10:01:31 AM »
Bush is planning to privatize a "portion" of workers' social security accounts so "the Government won't be able to touch it."

Read between the lines - the rest will be fair game, probably soon, depending on whether Iran or Syria looses the invasion coin toss.

START PLANNING NOW!!!!  One of the best tools you can get is called a Whole or Universal Annuity life insurance policy.  Everyone here over 18 (21 in some states) can lock in the premium now while it's cheap.  This is a policy that builds cash value (term life insurance, usually given as a work benefit, does NOT build value) ans the "annuity" aspect means that you can convert it into supplemental income decades from now if you want rather than leaving the money to a beneficiary.  You can also borrow against the policy if necessary, which is what I did to cover the closing costs for my house.  Find another lender who charges 5.5% on the loan balance ONCE a year!!

I got my $100,000 whole life variable annuity policy when I was 36.  My premium is $217 quarterly, which is a little over $72 a month.   If I had gotten advice like this when I was 21 & acted upon it, my premium would probably be about half that.  <_<

Please, give this some serious thought or research.   And drink a toast to me when you close on that house, pay your kid's tuition with the policy loan, or retire a little more comfortably.  ;)

I wish I could comprehend half of that, I know dick about economics besides the fact I get paid and I spend.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

I'm available for clarification or general questions.  If any of your parents/other relatives have an insurance agent they trust, that's the best place to start as he/she will know any state specifics.  Texas is a weird-ass place regarding insurance with our own forms & policies, etc.

Also, what a responsible thing for you to do!   :D If you play it right, you can probably get some birthday/Xmas premium payments out of the deal.

So does this thing have to do with Life Insurance or Retirement savings?

*picks up "Insurance and Retirement Funding for Dummies" at the bookstore*

Who should I get something like this with?  Where should I start?

Get me a copy of that, too.  "Super Retarded" edition.

There are two basic types of life insurance:

1) Term life- this is the type usually advertised on TV and offered as a company benefit.  It has a dollar amount such as $50,000, paid to a beneficiary that you designate if you die while the policy is in effect, and a time limit, such as 10 years, 20 years, or until you terminate employment with whichever company offering the insurance as a benefit.  If you don't pay the premium on time, the policy will cancel, and you have no coverage and all the money you paid in premium is forfeited, kind of like car insurance.  If the time period for coverage ends (the 10, 20 years mentioned or employment), all the premium is forfeited.  Term life insurance is very useful for people who have, say, a house, kids in school or others who would be adversely affected in the wallet if they should suddenly drop dead.

2) Whole life- sometimes called universal life.  This policy does not have a time limit attached to it.  The premium is higher, BUT your money doesn't disappear.  It's a bit like a savings account, but will also pay the dollar amount value to a beneficiary if you die.  If you stop paying your premiums and the policy cancels, you will get your money you have paid in premiums back (usually minus some admin fees or shit).

Because the policy is building value with every premium payment, it can be borrowed against.  The loan rate is very low and interest is usually charged only once per year.

There are also whole life policies with annuity features.  An annuity is a sum of money distributed in predetermined amounts at a certain time. Many wills include annuities; for example, Grandpa dies & grandson receives an annuity payment of $500 per month at age 18 as long as he is in college and gets the rest upon graduation.  My annuity will be whatever the cash value of the policy is upon retirement, which I can have distributed to me at a certain amount per month.

If I die at 75, let's say, my beneficiary will receive the balance in a lump sum.  Also, with my particular policy, if I have a terminal illness, I have the option of having the face value paid to me in a lump sum before I die.  Lots of options.

My point for starting this topic is the way life insurance premiums are set up - the sooner you begin a policy, the cheaper the premiums will be.  Example: if you get a whole life policy for $100,000 with a premium of $50 a month at age 21, that's ALWAYS your monthly premium.  If you wait until age 30 to get the SAME $100,000, your premium would be probably $100-150 a month.  Unlike term life, the premium payments don't increase as you get older.  The younger you start the policy, the more insurance you can probably afford.  If I had started my policy when I was 20-25, I could have had a $200,000 policy for my $217 quarterly premiums, but the world was a happier place back then with weird things like company pensions and no threat to social security.  I had no reason to be concerned about my retirement.

Perfect! Regardless of whether he agrees with the social security disaster predictions, he can definitely answer any more questions about whole life policies.  I have no idea if the company that writes my policy even offers the annuity option on new policies, PLUS options vary from state to state.   Of course, a 401(k) is the kewlest ( unless you're Enron) because your employer is essentially giving you free money when they match your contrubitions, but not every place offers them.  IRAs are good, too, but unless something has changed, they can't be borrowed against and you lose a metric shitload of money if you cash an IRA in early.

Bottom line, whatever option/options, start thinking about it.   Don't trust the government to take care of you 40-50 years down the line - it has too many potential wars to finance.  I'll be lucky if I get anything in 24 years.

DAMN, why can't I spell today??

I'm blaming it on Sam and the right-wing conspirators!

Term life sounds like such a rip-off!  Why even bother with it!?  =/

Do you have suggestions about who to get it with Bernie?  Since we're kinda close distance-wise, any suggestion would likely be more applicable to me than to someone in another state.

Nuri, I'm meeting with my financial advisor Tuesday & I'll ask if he has any recommendations for the current climate.  Same with our life & health manager here.

And don't let the "financial advisor" throw you - we don't have a lot to get advised on.    But since our company was bought last year and our employee pension plan was replaced by a 401(k), we're going to get lump sum payouts, and frankly, I don't trust myself with a chell for 40 grand.  I'm ashamed to say how fast we blew through what I inherited when my father died.  #^^#  Home decor, anime & fun with Eddie - the rest we pissed away frivolously.  :P

Semi-related, I was just talking to Merla about finances the other day and we were wondering why the hell there wasn't a class on this sort of thing in school.  (Like grade school...)  All the things you can do with money and how to invest and yadda yadda... I feel like I've been ripped off.  I went to a magnet school with required business and accounting courses and even they never even came close to touching upon how to handle personal finances.  My parents sure as hell never provided any guidance for those sorts of matters.

You have the basics down.  That's the best way to start.  Things get hairy when you start adding things like spouses, kids & homes.  And a whole life policy isn't for every circumstance, but it's one of the few things that allows you to save money & borrow against it if needed without the gubberment nosing in for a cut.  And anyway I have critters to provide for and a house I'd like Eddie to have without worrying about the mortgage if a bus hits me tonight.

And Nuri, I was too sick to meet with my finance dude, so the appointment's been rescheduled for early December.  I'll research on my own & PM you next week in the meantime.
