Steam is supposed to store backups of your saves on their end, but not all games do for some reason, and some games that say they support it don't actually. I lost several years of progress on a certain game when I got a new PC, and that kind of killed my desire to stick with it.

You ever read Boy's Abyss? That's some real misery pr0n. I fell off out of distaste. I'll give Maria a look.

Carl Weathers is dead.

I had no idea he played in the NFL/CFL before getting into acting.

The thing about Shakespeare is funny to me, because I don't know if you follow Kevin Smith at all, (I only watch his Fatman Beyond podcast with Marc Bernardin) but he has mentioned time and again that all his corporate overlords ever asked of him was to treat the source material with respect, like it's Shakespeare, if you will. Literally in those words. And the way he talks about it, he's totally confident that he nailed the assignment.

And you see it most in the monologuing from Skeletor and Hordak, the waxing poetic and the groan-inducing alliteration. I don't know, did these guys do that a lot in the old show? I don't remember. To be clear, I'm not saying it is Shakespeare, just that I think Smith believes that's what he's accomplished here.

I did like how Hordak snorted derisively at Skeletor at one point, that was a nice touch. And I did genuinely laugh at a couple jokes, I just don't recall what they were at the moment. One of them was one from He-Man towards the end of the fifth episode.

You mentioned the Snake Men, and I did like what they did with Teela in regards to that. I don't know if you ever had any of those mini-comics they used to pack in with the figures, but one of the earliest ones had that green-skinned Teela character, and I'm not sure she was even referred to as Teela at that point, to be honest. But then later when she got her own toy, they mostly kept that same design (albeit with the swapped out skin tone) complete with her cobra hood and scepter.

Also, seeing Rio Blast and Snout Spout animated was pretty sick, even if they were purely visual and inconsequential as actual characters.

And from the way Kevin talks about it, it sounds like Revolution is being very well received. He sounds hopeful that they'll get to do more.

I've been watching Snack Basue. Not much to say about it. It's a gag show that takes place almost entirely in a single room. The art style is extremely simplistic, but at least it allows them to keep the animation consistent.

36
I thought the final episode was a really good payoff overall, but man, I found a lot of the dialogue throughout to be fucking awful.

I wouldn't be opposed to them coming back to it at some point down the line, though. Going by the epilogue, they clearly have some ideas.

37
Wow. I hadn't heard about that, but having seen it now, it makes so much more sense how hollow the movie feels. What the fuck.

38
I watched Wish. Not great. A couple of the songs were a little catchy. The backgrounds/environments were all very flat/drab/dreary.

I don't think it's as insufferable as everyone says on its own, but when you factor in that it's supposed to be this grand centennial celebration of Disney's theatrical animated features... yeah. Kind of a dud.

39
Yeah, I think some of the moments in Pluto that stuck out were character walk cycles. I'm trying to think of what it looked like. Maybe if you were to record Michael Jackson doing the moonwalk, but then you played it back in reverse. Kind of like that.

It probably doesn't help that I'm simultaneously working my way through my highly-curated backlog, where pretty much everything is guaranteed to be something I enjoy. For instance, I always look forward to watching another episode of Frieren, and so far that show hasn't disappointed me once. Of course, there's the possibility that that won't always be the case.

To Your Eternity is a recent example. That show had such a strong dozen or so episodes, but I'd say even as early as the second half of the first season, the quality fell off a cliff in every meaningful way. The art became rushed and ugly, but even worse, the storytelling was a shadow of its former glory. And the second season only cemented my attitude, with its tendency to spoon-feed viewers the Reader's Digest version of events. It was almost like watching a bunch of recaps strung together for more fleshed-out episodes that don't actually exist.

42
You know, I think I like the idea of new shows a lot more than actually committing to watching new shows. A lot of these that have left me feeling relatively optimistic after the first episode, when it comes time to chell out episode number two I can't even force myself to sit through until the end.

So few shows feel special or vital. It's mostly just a bunch of hastily-assembled refuse piling up at the end of a conveyor belt.

I know sloppy animation has been around forever, but when you see it these days, you almost wonder if some studios have begun to employ AI in their production. I watched Pluto on Netflix, and there were times when sequences looked "generated" if you take my meaning.

Man, I started watching the second episode of Sasaki, and they've already given up. In the opening sequence, every time they had to redraw Peeps, he was hilariously off-model. In one shot his body is too slender, in the next his beak is way too big, it was beyond goofy. That was an easy drop.

44
Mr. Villain's Day Off, yeah. I should just use show titles instead of vague descriptions.

45
That's what it's about?! I had tossed that one on the nope pile based on the isekai-ness alone, but I feel like I have to see it for myself now.

Did you try the one where the evil dude is obsessed with pandas? It's cute, but it's what the cool kids would call a nothing burger.

Edit A: I see Netflix added a new movie called Maboroshi, any thoughts on that one?

Edit B: I just watched the first episode (double-length, woo!) of Sasaki, and I kind of appreciate what an absolute hodgepodge of disparate genre conventions it is. Like every 12 minutes it's shooting off in a completely new direction, so bizarre.

I definitely enjoyed the second episode of Solo Leveling more than the first. I'm sorry to say that I didn't read most of your post, because for stuff I'm not already familiar with, I prefer going in blind. Ignorance is bliss! And if it shits the bed somewhere down the road, I'll just drop it.

MAPPA is on some S-tier shit with Bucchigiri. First episode is so detailed, and so colorful, and so kinetic, and I loved every minute of it. Easily my frontrunner for the season thus far.

There's something unfathomably dull about The Witch and the Beast. Add to the fact that it clearly has a sack of lentils as its budget and you get a sloppy story with meh characters and not even a single enjoyable action scene for your trouble.

I was a little caught off guard by how low effort it was, visually. Like, even if a show ultimately ends up looking like shit, back in the day they would at least try to hook you with a lavish first episode.

It's probably an unfair generalization, but you can usually tell when the production team is passionate about their work, versus just showing up for a paycheck.

And can I just say, I really fucking hate it anytime I start a new show and the entire introduction is just a narrator info dumping the entire premise of what I'm about to watch. Like, how about some worldbuilding VIA storytelling? If I'm left to piece things together for myself, it makes for much more compelling viewing, right?

I'll give Metallic Rouge credit in that department, because they drop you into it with little to no explanation as to what's going on.

I watched the first episode of the one where the femcel gets off on assaulting magical girls. Pretty vile. Japanese television is getting kind of brazen with their content. I'm no prude, but why does so much of this stuff always lean so heavily towards noncon? "Grr! The fact that they're clearly NOT enjoying it is PRECISELY what gets my motor running!" Blech.

Deaf Girl Monogatari was cute, but you're right, they seem to inhabit a world where evolution favored feminine traits.

I gave Solo Leveling a try, because like you I caught wind of all the excitement surrounding it, and I did end up liking it more than I thought I would. That being said, I'm guessing everybody gets a wardrobe change at some point, because right now all the character designs look like they came straight out of the Sears Fall Catalog circa 1998.

49
Danjon Meshi is some primo anime. Love the characters, the comedy, it's got a Bump of Chicken song, what more could I ask for?

50
Poor Things. Wonderful film. Surprised how much fucking there was. Probably the most fucking I've seen in a non-pornographic movie.

The Iron Claw. Another excellent flick. Super depressing, though. Like, God damn.

Here we go again...

Man, Winter '24 is absolutely LOUSY with fantasy and/or isekai settings. Woof.

52
Godzilla was great. I'm having a really hard time imagining that upcoming Godzilla x Kong thing being even half as good as Minus One.

The Boy and the Heron was pretty good. Looked really nice. Not sure it's an all-time Ghibli, though.

53
I can admit that the first episode wasn't awful. I'm cautiously optimistic.

54
Tiny Toons Looniversity came out almost three months ago to such little fanfare that I only found out about it today. And it was even on my radar!

I guess nobody watched it. And I really shouldn't be surprised because the same thing happened with the three seasons of new Animaniacs. Nobody cared.

Is the nostalgia well running dry?

55

I should hate this, but actually it kind of looks okay?

56
Yeah, my interest in that one fell off a cliff when I realized Omega Force was the developer. No thank you.

57
Watched the first episode of My Daemon on Netflix. Kind of like a fucked up Pokémon. I didn't mind it.

That part of the movie they all get a wardrobe change, and Captain Marvel looks like she picked hers up at Spirit Halloween. It looks like pajamas. Or some kind of track suit or something. Maybe she's going for a jog?

Yeah, her "updated" or "improved" costume or whatever you want to call it just looks cheap and bizarre. I can't explain it.

Season (series?) finale of Loki was solid. Wish more of the episodes could have been like that. Had one of the most "epic" moments the MCU has seen in a very long time.

It felt weird watching a Marvel thing again and actually caring about the characters and what was happening to them.
