Title: Death Thread (formerly "Anne Rice died.")

Were you a fan? I've never read any of her stuff. Only ever saw the Tom Cruise movie.

80 is a pretty good run, I think. I know people can last a lot longer and remain vital, but...

80 is a pretty good run.

I actually wasn't.  I always meant to read her books.  I think I may have picked one up and tried and got bored.  I think this was around when Queen of the Damned got released as I was, like, one of the five other people that actually liked Queen of the Damned.  But the Interview and QotD movies was as far as I got as far as Anne Rice anything.

I do recall some brouhaha on FB about her being problematic in some way.  This happened several years ago but I don't remember for what specifically.  I tried looking this up to jog my memory and she was allegedly a bully who hated fanfiction and negative commentary on her works to the extent of encouraging harassment and doxxing.  Because what better use of one's popularity than to point your finger at your target and let your millions of fans have at them?  I know this isn't an official source on anything but I found these tumblr posts circa 2017 (https://thenightling.tumblr.com/post/161087286338/do-not-trust-anne-rice) if you're interested in any of the anecdotes.

But, yeah, 80's a good run.  She had a good life.  And if the allegations against her are true, she had a much better life than she deserved.

**Because that's tumblr, sorry, but there's a lot of nonsense over at that link as well.  But I'm too lazy to google any further than that.

Well.

I guess if she was a horrible bitch, then she can rot.

I wonder if now that she's gone, if whoever inherits her estate or whatever, is going to try and flood the market with adaptations of her stuff.

Like, maybe some bishy shit on crunchyroll or Netflix or something.

I mean, that could be good, right? Potentially?

I did a quick search and it seems something was already in the works before she croaked.  She and her son were looking to get her stuff adapted to series.

Relevant press release: AMC Networks Acquires Rights To The Iconic Works Of Anne Rice (http://"https://www.amc.com/blogs/amc-networks-acquires-rights-to-the-iconic-works-of-anne-rice--1008224")

AMC doesn't give me much hope tbh.  But then again, neither does anyone else.

Yeah, AMC's kind of a meat grinder. Seems that Walking Dead was just a cosmic fluke for them, and they're milking it way beyond its best before date. What is there, like, three different series now?

But yeah, that fits. Some Anne Rice series that runs far too long and spawns multiple spinoffs. That checks out.

Wait wait wait... the creator of Yu-gi-oh died?  He drowned while snorkling?  He was found partially eaten by animals?  And had what appeared to be a shark bite?  Holy shit.  At least it wasn't cancer claiming someone again.  Too bad you can't edit Voldemort to have Yugi hair.

Oh yeah, I heard about that. So unnecessary. Like, don't do activities like that by yourself. If just one other person had been with him, he could still be alive today. Fucking terrible. He was only 60!

I'm actually a little bit upset about this one, because it didn't have to happen. Terminal illness is one thing, going snorkeling alone and not coming back is a tragedy.

It's a tough world for lonely people who want to be outdoors. I'm sure if I loved going outside and remotely tolerated bodies of water, I'd be found bloated and chewed, too. If this guy liked mountains instead, they'd've probably found him eaten by bears or something.

My face is glued to my phone almost every day like everybody else and I swear, frickin' Google "news" (or whatever they call the page with news stories that pops up when I open a new tab) only tells me the most useless shit on the planet. It didn't even tell me Nichelle Nichols died. Why'd I have to find that out through Facebook three days later when I was randomly logging in? And stop giving me paywall bullshit. Man, Google fucking disgusts me at how useless it's determined to be when it comes to news and search results. All in service of our corporate overlords. Or whatever. :finger:

Oh, the Shat will be getting Voldemorted, don't you worry.

That reminds me, when I got my Kindle however many fucking years ago it was now, I fell down a Bizarro fiction hole. Don't know if you're familiar. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's just absolute trash literature. It would be like... reading a Big Mac... or something.

Anyway, there was this one story called Shatnerquake. Basically it was about every character he's ever played coming to life, and the protag has to protect the real Shatner, because they're all trying to kill him. I think? That might be totally wrong. Maybe Shat was the protag? Whatever.

Seriously, don't go looking for it. It's pretty much just fanfic that got published. Dissolves grey matter on contact.

Olivia Newton John died. I always thought John would go first. Weird thought from me, I know, but I'm actually kind of worried for her daughter Chloe Lattanzi. The daughter's had various addiction issues and was already a hot mess before her mom died. But she supposedly runs a cannabis farm now so maybe she's found the way to cope.

I cannot believe my mans dead. I was in shock tbh. Mostly because he was my neighbour (as in he lived like a min away from my place). I was walking the dog and there were so many reporters outside of his building but NO noise at all. Very respectful and all. RIP

ALso RIP Olivia. I was listening to Summer Nights the weekend before she passed, coincidentally.

ALso they are saying Anne Heche is gone for real. Also read a bit about her life and omg what a fucked up one that was. Poor lady.

Not to be callous, but the thing that immediately popped into my mind was, "Hey! Does this mean we'll be getting new money up here in the lands beyond?"

Elizabeth is currently featured on our twenty dollar bill, and all of our coins. Is it Ol' Chuck's time to shine?

Apparently not in the foreseeable future, according to national news outlets. Bummer.

Foreseeable. Foreseeable. Just look at that for a moment. That's an actual English word. More vowels than consonants.

No, I totally remember that was a movie. There's a scene where Martin Lawrence mistakes Tim Robbins for a serial killer, and he screams, "Please don't kill me, freaky Jason!" at him and it's fucking hilarious. Or it was, I haven't actually seen it in forever. Couldn't tell you anything else about the movie, though.

I read a lot of Anne Rice's books. I've read Interview, Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, Tale of the Body Thief, Menoch the devil, Black Wood Farm (well I started it, didn't finish it.) Prince Lestat, and Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis (Which I gave up on about 1/3 of the way through).

I love Interview. It's one of my favorite books, but everything after that is of lesser quality. It was like Harper Lee wrote To Kill A Mockingbird and then after that decided to focus on novelizations of the Fast and the Furious movies.

I just put a hold on it and realized something: I've always called it 'Interview with A Vampire" but it's "Interview with THE Vampire." I asked Merla how she remembers it and she's the same. Also, she's never seen the movie. All these years I thought she had.

I mentioned re-watching Interview in the movie thread so Merla saw a tiny bit of it. She wasn't really interested tho', mainly because she, like me, also doesn't watch a whole lot of movies anymore.

As for the topic of deaths, uh... my computer's battery, I guess. Although I guess that's more "on life support" at this point.

Loretta Lynn was certainly a titan of country music, but the modern music field in general owes her a lot for proving that women were just as valid artists as men and breaking down a lot of barriers by virtue of that. And I always appreciated the fact that, even though she was rich and owned a mansion, she cut her own grass until she had her stroke several years ago.

Tina Turner. And I find it weird that Wikipedia is all "Swiss singer" Tina Turner.  I'm trying to figure out why I find it weird.  I think it's because if you're known and famous for being from somewhere, it's odd that your page you have only because you're famous notes so prominently something you were not famous for.  I get she became a Swiss citizen but I dunno.  If I move to Wales tomorrow and then become famous for peanut juggling, am I really a Welsh peanut-juggler?  Of if I become famous tomorrow for peanut-juggling and then move to Wales thirty years later when I'm not really known for peanut-juggling as much, am I still a famous Welsh peanut-juggler?  Meh. Semantics.

I had heard he died, probably pretty soon after it was publicly announced, but thought it was a joke. When I was kid, I really didn't like him. I'm not sure why. Even as an adult I never found him funny but as a kid he made me really uncomfortable and I never understood how other people enjoyed watching him. So, naturally, when I was a child my Dad collected a bunch of magazine and newspaper clippings and taped them to my wall near my bed one morning like a crazy-person. And I woke up to all of these Peewees staring at me. I don't really talk to my Dad anymore.

Not because of that though. In retrospect, that was actually fucking funny. And this was before Peewee was caught ganking lil' Peewee so it wasn't weird yet or anything.

Yeah, he's a funny man, even if he's got some of that weird boomer humor that doesn't quite land anymore. Maybe that's why I still sometimes talk to him. Imagine being a lousy father and unfunny. At that point you might as well be dead to me.

I guess I would have been 6 years old when Pee-wee's Playhouse debuted? Or maybe we got it a little later in Canada? I don't know. Anyway, I found everything about that show hypnotic. I wanted to live in that fucking house. Pretty sure I dreamed about it frequently.

I had no idea until much, much later that it had been retrofitted from an adult-skewing stage show. There were definitely vestigial bits to it though, like how Miss Yvonne desperately wanted to fuck Pee-wee. That still came across as funny, even though as a little kid, I wasn't entirely sure what her actual interest in him was.

The transforming sets, the stop motion shorts, the various characters that were constantly showing up, that show was just fucking magical to me. I remember feeling bad when the whole "Pee-wee is a pervert" thing was going around. Not like seriously bent out of shape or anything, just disappointed.

I remember when Big Top Pee-wee showed up at the local rental place, my friend group must have watched that fucking movie a hundred times. And for all that, I can barely recall what happens in it.

I don't know. Just thinking out loud, I guess. Fond memories of when I was just a little kid on a Saturday morning.

I went and grabbed a torrent of the entire series, and the first episode features Natasha Lyonne as a tiny child. As soon as she walked through Pee-wee's front door with two other kids, I was like, "Is that..? It couldn't be... But is it?!"

And sure enough her name was there in the credits. According to Google, she's 44 now, so it checks out.

He'll be tellin' the dead to spay or neuter their pets in Hell. In Heaven? In Hell? (Or no where, if you're an atheist.)

Terry Funk and Arleen Sorkin died last week, too.

Liver failure! He was only 56...

Guess it does make sense not to live for fun.

Carl Weathers is dead.

I had no idea he played in the NFL/CFL before getting into acting.

No wonder Google wanted me to search for Carl Weathers' age. I was searching something completely different and when I put "car," Google was all "you want Carl Weathers' age?" Google is so weird and broken.

Don't worry...he's just on his way down snake way and he'll be back after all the rest of us have died fighting off an alien invasion.

The juice is loose!  To quote Schmoo "Did he go to hell tho'?" :raiseeyebrow:

I find it weird that I'll always have good memories of him from the Naked Gun movies. They're apparently making a new one with Liam Neeson as Leslie Nielson's son. Did not know this until looking up the movies just now.

Well, they do say Jesus forgives.

Also, if we're talking Old Testament, he's probably in the clear. Like, the moment adultery occurred, use of lethal force became authorized.

You know, with the rule book being written by a bunch of old dudes from 2000 years ago and all.

But were Goldman and Brown ever actually bumping uglies, though?

At least I have my good ol' OJ's Legal Pad (https://www.flickr.com/photos/55541152@N00/albums/1134452/)! That thing was freakin' GOLD.

OJ death's sparked a very strange convo between me and Merla about our dad. I'll, uh, just leave it at that.

Meanwhile, Eric Carmen died last month but got, like, no media attention since he only murdered zero people. And I laughed at his Wikipedia page. "Not to be confused with Eric Cartman." Who the fuck's confusing the guy who sang "Hungry Eyes" with Eric Cartman?

Edit: Eric Cartman's page actually has "Not to be confused with Eric Carmen." At least it also applies in reverse.
