....with a-holes who can't bother to specify their page and font colors? Why must it be a crime to want a default black page with white font? Worst, sometimes they half-specify so I'll get black letters on my default black color or default white on a white-specified page.

The human eye has more trouble distinguishing shades of the colour blue than any other. If that was red you'd be set.

light on dark works for me. It's easier on the eyes to read, say, white on black than black on white.
I suck at matching colors and graphic design, so I cheated by going with an existing combination: on my Evangelion site (http://www.shwiggie.com/eva/), I made the whole thing evoke the Unit 01 by going with dark purple background, white lettering, orange links, and neon green highlights and borders. When it came time to do a forum (http://forums.shwiggie.com) skin, I just adapted it for the sake of having something different. IMO, it works well.

Yeah I've found just find something you like as a colour scheme and tweak that to your liking. I mean it doesn't really have to be another web page. Find a CD case you think is nice and copy that if you want.

Here's the other thing I want to figure out, is a theme for the site. I wouldn't mind sticking a few anime pics in the site, but I want this site to look semi-professional for future employers.

Yeah, you could take pretty much anything. The whole blue/orangey thing happening with the default skin here was all based on that one image of the bananas.

I really want my site to look like something that would be worthy of the CSS Zen Garden (http://www.mezzoblue.com/zengarden/alldesigns/), but most of those sites are done by professional web design companies, and I'm broke.
